Purpose of observation:

1. To collect the data and information on various aspects of longline tuna operating in

Indian Ocean.

2. To collect information and data on biology (e.g. length).

Observation date:

Data was collected during the observation onboard KM Mutiara 5 during the period of

31 August until 20 October 2015. Data collected consisted of fishing grounds setting

and hauling and catch composition. Length of each catch was measurfed.

Result:

The name of the boat where observation took place is KM Mutiara 5, with the port

based in Benoa Harbour, Denpasar (Longitude 115012’30” East and Latitude 08044’22”

South Fig.1).

Spesification of boat

KM. Mutiara 5 is GT. 29 No. 1660/Pd 2008 built in 2008, with main materials

made of wood and covered by fiberglass. The dimention of the boat LxWxD (m) = 22 x

4,5 x 2. Main engine is Mitshubishi 6D22 with 300 PK, and two other Mitshubishi

engines for generator 4 cylinders 60 PK, and cooler carrier 30 PK. Boat speed during

setting is between 4,5 – 5,5 knot, and during navigation is 5 – 6 knot. Capacity of

holding the catch is 20 tonnes. Frozen on board to -200 C. Number of crew is 13, boat

captain also the fishing master. Navigation is supported with magnetic compass, Global

Positioning System (GPS) Furuno GP-32, and Radio Direction Finder (RDF) Taiyo

TDA-157 and comuniction radio Single Side Band Radio (SSB) Icom IC-718, and auto

steering gear. Safety gear consist of life jacket 15 pieces, two ring buoy, and fire

extinguisher.

Spesifikasi of gear

Longline of KM. Mutiara 5 is blong system, which used by longline from

Taiwan. KM Mutiara 5 based in Benoa harbour Bali

KM Mutiara 5 has 26 blong, with details specification in table 1 (Fig. 3). The

hook is J-hook No. 5, made of stainless steel 6 cm. The baits are lemuru (Sardinella

lemuru), live milkfish (Chanos chanos forskal) size 14 – 16 cm, ikan layang

(Decapterus spp.) and squid (Loligo spp.). the used of baits depending on the condition

of moon (full or new moon).

Fishing grounds

The 33 setting during the observation were conducted in the Indian Ocean south

of Bali to Nusa Tenggara 10046 – 15036 LS dan 115007 – 119030 BT (Fig. 4).

Catch composition

Catch composition of KM. Mutiara 5 during 33 settings consisted of 24 spesies.

These are main target species : BET (Thunnus obesus), YFT madidihang, albacore

(Thunnus alalunga) dan SBT (Thunnus maccoyii), and other species including

swordfish (Xiphias gladius), setuhuk hitam (Makaira indica), setuhuk loreng

(Tetrapturus audax), ikan layaran (Istiophorus platypterus), ikan gindara

(Lepidocybium spp.), setuhuk biru (Makaira mazara), ikan opah (Lampris guttatus),

cakalang (Katsuwonus pelamis), bawal lonjong (Taractes rubescens), bawal sabit

(Taractichthys steindachneri), tenggiri (Acanthocybium solandri), ikan naga

(Alepisaurus ferrox), pari lemer (Pteroplatytrygon violacea), layur hitam (Gempylus

serpens), alu-alu atau baracuda (Sphyraena barracuda), hiu selendang biru (Prionace

glauca), hiu lanjaman (Carcharhinus brevipinna), hiu botol (Pseudocarcharias

kamoharai), hiu mako (Isurus oxyrinchus) dan ikan mola (Famili Molidae). Total catch

is 602 individuals.

Dominat main target catch is BET 29 fish (4,8%), followed by YFT 26 fish

(4,3%), albacore 22 fish (3,7%), and SBT 11 fish (1,8%). Other catch consisted of

species with economic value, and non economic value. The most catch is gindara 61

fish (10,2%), followed by shark (hiu botol) 40 fish (6,7%). Hiu botol bernilai ekonomis

karena diambil minyaknya yang berasal dari hatinya. Species with no economic value is

ikan naga 195 fish (32,5%), followed by ikan pari 122 fish (22%) (Fig. 5).

Hook Rate

The highest hook rate is for ikan naga 0,454. While the highest hook rate for

main target is BET 0,068, followed by YFT madidihang 0,061, albacore 0,051 and SBT

0,026 (Table 3).

Biological Aspects

Length

Length measurement was conducted for 22 albacore, 29 BET and 26 YFT. The results

of the length distribution for albacore was 88 – 112 cmFL, with the average leangth was

94,07 cmFL, and modus at range of 86 – 90 cmFL (Fig. 6), BET has length distribution

between 85 – 174 cmFL, average 139,06 cmFL, and modus at 146 – 150 cmFL (Fig.7),

while YFT madidihang was 120 – 165 cmFL, average length 144,3 cmFL, and modus

length at 85 – 87 cmFL (Fig. 8).
