Learning Through Imitation A presentation

by Arnab & Arman

Guided by Dr. Rooplekha Khuntia

According to psychologist Albert

Bandura and colleagues, Observational

learning (also known as vicarious

learning, social learning, or modeling) is a type of learning that occurs as a function of

observing, retaining and replicating novel

behavior executed by others.

Required conditions

Page 4: Observational learning

Required conditions• Attention to the model –

In order for the behavior to be learned, the observer must see the modeled behavior.

• Retention of details –The observer must be able to recall the modeled behavior.

• Motor reproduction –The observer must have the motor skills to reproduce the action, the observer must also have the motivation to carry out the action.

• Motivation and opportunity –The observer must be motivated to carry out the action they have observed and remembered, and must have the opportunity to do so. Motivations may include past reinforcement, promised incentives, and vicarious reinforcement. Punishment may discourage repetition of the behavior

Classic experiments

Crucial Examples

• In the study, young children saw a film of an adult wildly hitting a five-foot-tall inflatable punching toy called a Bobo. Later the children were given the opportunity to play with the Bobo doll themselves, and, sure enough, most displayed the same kind of behavior, in some cases mimicking the aggressive behavior almost identically.

• You also heard about the small country guy died imitating after seeing Dhananjay’s hanging session.

Television&

Games

Page 8: Observational learning

• Television? You have heard about Shaktiman ? A small guy died as per he was trying to fly over roof-tops with ‘his super-power’.

• You might or surely have seen the famous “Shinchan” .The season two of this cartoon was banned in India (means dubbing and telecasting not occurred) due to most of our young friends feel comfortable to follow Shinchan’s “errotic” styles making the surrounding atmosphere uncomfortable…..

Page 9: Observational learning

Don’t play Call of Duty: Modern Warfare!!!Exposure to actual firearm violence (being shot or being shot at) doubles the probability that an adolescent will commit serious violence over the next two years.

• You have also have read the newspaper ..It was about when we were @ our high schools when a gamer guy from China takes a gun and killed three of his friends due to a burning conversion. Later research follows that his violence increased gradually after when he started playing mass-murdering games

Next time prevent your friends if you see them playing this kinda explict games!! :P

• Children who were afraid of dogs were exposed to a model — dubbed the Fearless Peer—playing with a dog (Alsatian). After exposure, observers were considerably more likely to approach a strange dog than were children who had not viewed the Fearless Peer.

“Sometimes our peer pressure helps us do many things which we can’t do @ normal conditions”
