Addressing childhood hunger has been a primary focus within JLOSH’s mission of serving children in its service area. JLOSH’s annual Thanksgiving Basket Program aims to provide a healthy and wholesome holiday meal to families facing food insecurity by supporting those with children on the Free or Reduced Lunch Program in the Orange School District. Partnering with Kings Food Markets, which donates nearly all the turkeys, JLOSH leverages other stakeholders to drive for all the traditional Thanksgiving sides, including mashed potatoes, stuffing, vegetables, yams, cranberry sauce, and gravy. Through these collective efforts, JLOSH is donating approximately $6,800.00 worth of food to the Orange School District this Thanksgiving.

JLOSH seeks to alleviate this burden for many families this holiday season by giving them the opportunity to enjoy and celebrate a Thanksgiving dinner,” JLOSH President Rosemary Mattson said in a press release. “We thank our partners, especially Kings Food Markets, Saint Barnabas Medical Center and Dun & Bradstreet, who recognize this need in our communities and support our efforts to reduce the trauma many children experience because of threats of food insecurity.”

JLOSH delivered 306 turkeys and bags of Thanksgiving food items to the delivery dock at Orange High School on November 20. On hand to greet members of JLOSH were Tyrone Dorsey, manager of food services for the Orange School District, Barry Devone, Community Engagement Officer and Interim Superintendent Ronald C. Lee. The Navy Junior Reserve Officer Training Corp cadets were also on-hand to help unload the items, along with food service staff.

“We are honored to have donated hundreds of turkeys, valuing about $4,300, to the Junior League Food Drive this Thanksgiving season, providing dinner to many in the area,” said Judy Spires, Chairman and CEO of Kings Food Markets. “We, at Kings, pride ourselves in supporting the communities we serve each and every day, especially during this time of giving.”

“For the last three years we have partnered with JLOSH and with each year I feel as though our partnership has strengthened. We share common goals and a vision of supporting our communities. This year we are proud to work with JLOSH in contributing time and effort in putting together over 300 Thanksgiving baskets for families in our communities. I would like to personally thank Livingston Bagel, Supreme Bakery and Sodexo for generously donating the desserts to complete the Thanksgiving Baskets! An event such as this is directly aligned with our Social Impact / Community Investment Practice,” said Margie Heller, Administrative Director, Community Health and Outreach, Saint Barnabas Medical Center.

“The Junior League has been partners with our school district since 2012, supplying our students and the community with dental supplies, winter gloves, books, backpacks with school supplies, feminine hygiene products, pre-K school nurses’ pantry supplies and, of course, our yearly turkey drive and fixings for our students and their households,” Tyrone Dorsey, manager of food services for the Orange School District, said in the release. “The Junior League has been supportive of our students even outside of our school buildings. What the Junior League brings to the Orange community is a true blessing. Our students and their families are very appreciative for what they receive from the Junior League.”

JLOSH would like to thank Kings Food Markets for its commitment to serving families in need. We are thrilled to partner with Kings each year so that families can enjoy a proper Thanksgiving meal. We also extend our thanks to Saint Barnabas Medical Center for its efforts in securing over 300 desserts for our Thanksgiving bags; a critical meal item for any Thanksgiving and one that JLOSH has not been able to provide in past years. We are also very appreciative of Dun & Bradstreet who provided critical support by donating nearly 275 meal items for our Thanksgiving Baskets. We also thank ShopRite of Millburn, Barre3 in Livingston, the Millburn School District and its Townwide Community Outreach Program, Jefferson Elementary School in Maplewood, West Orange Public Schools, Christ Church Nursery School in Short Hills, Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church in Westfield and Maplecrest Ford Lincoln of Union for their individual and tremendous support and donations this year.

Rosa Parks Community School Parent Organization Distributes Thanksgiving Meals to Families

At the November 21 PTO Meeting at Rosa Parks Community School (RPCS), President, Ms. Tisa Singleton (pictured right), had a special presentation for parents who were in attendance. Through her efforts in securing donations from Shop Rite and other local merchants, 27 families were randomly selected to receive Thanksgiving meals, complete with turkey, complementary meal items and roasting pans. Eleven additional families received other Thanksgiving “fixings” to supplement their holiday meals. Families were excited, as their names were called to receive the bags of food.

Additionally, families heard presentations about Child Abuse Prevention and PBSIS: Positive Behavior Support in Schools. The families were supported with Spanish and Creole translation service provided by staff members Mrs. Vivian Piaz and Mr. Speker Antione. Fuel Up To Play 60 Submitted by Ms. Samantha Anzano, Physical Education teacher, Rosa Parks Community School

On November 21, ten students from Rosa Parks Community School (RPCS), Grades 4 to 7, were selected to attend the Jets Fuel Up to Play 60 (FUTP60) Training Camp. FUTP60 plays a key role in supporting school breakfast programs. Resources include grant funds that can be used for equipment such as mobile breakfast carts, smoothie stations, breakfast bars or other tools that help more students be their best and eat breakfast every day. Students competed in an innovation challenge to implement a healthy eating play for a chance to win $500 toward the funding of their project. The RPCS students designed a greenhouse, which they modeled after Orange High School, to grow fresh fruits and vegetables. They would use these nutritious foods to help encourage students to eat fresh and not pre-packaged foods. The students wanted to use the fruits and vegetables to also make smoothies for healthy snack substitutes. Students were also engaged in a flag football game at MetLife Stadium and learned how they can compete for grant money to fund physical and healthy eating plays. At this present moment, Rosa Parks has over 100 students signed up for FUTP60!

EVERFI Certification Breakfast

Submitted by Tera Phipps and Glenn Gamble, Technology Coordinator and Business Educator, Orange Preparatory Academy

On November 20, Mr. Glenn Gamble treated his first block B Day ninth grade Computer Applications class to breakfast. This incentive was earned because all sixteen students received a certificate of completion through EverFi’s Endeavor STEM Career Exploration module before the end of Marking Period 1.

Endeavor is EverFi’s latest addition to their suite of learning modules. Endeavor is an interactive STEM career exploration program with interactive lessons in three modules:

• Building the Perfect Playlist • Connecting the Home of the Future • Designing the Ultimate Prototype.

The resource has a “Chart Your Path” infographic that can be utilized to explore popular STEM careers. Learners engage with content that reinforces key STEM skills and mindsets while enjoying the freedom and motivation of self-exploration and an interactive learning experience. The American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) sponsors Endeavor. Teachers, who want to use EverFi resources in their classroom, can send an email to Mr. Gamble: [email protected].

The breakfast funded by Mr. Gamble included burritos from Taco Bell, pastries, fruit, coffee, hot chocolate, OJ and candy. Principal Mr. Dana Gaines, Asst. Principals Mr. Oliverto Agosto, Dr. Shadin Bilal and Mr. David Guglietti attended the event. Joining the celebration was District CTE Supervisor Mr. Jahmel Drakeford, OPA Technology Coordinator Ms. Tera Phipps and EverFi NJ School Representative Ms. Amanda Vartabedian. During the short program, Mr. Gaines and Mr. Gamble made remarks, and Alvin Jeune presented a student reflection. In graduation style, certificates were presented to ALL sixteen students, and then breakfast was served. As of this article, Alvin is one of five students in Mr. Gamble’s class that has earned more than three certificates through EverFi, congratulations Alvin! After the event, Ms. Vartabedian informed Mr. Gamble that he had been nominated to be an Ambassador Teacher for EverFi. Needless to say, this event and nomination will pin another shining star on the great things happening at OPA and in the Orange School District.
