Antibacterial materials

A powerful weapon in the fight againstgerms

An investigation by the German Society for HospitalHygiene (DGKH) discovered that, each year, around900,000 patients in Germany catch so-called nosoco-mial infections (hospital infections), and at least30,000 people even die from them.

Infections caught in hospitalshave become an increasingproblem, all around the world.Viruses, bacteria and, in particu-lar, the feared germs resistant toantibiotics infect many peopleevery year. They cause highcosts and create a loss of confi-dence in the affected facilities.Set against this background, the

prevention of hospital infectionshas an ever-higher priority. Be-sides comprehensive hygienemeasures for patients and medi-cal personnel, the selection ofsuitable construction and installa-tion material can help to preventinfections. An effective measureis the use of antibacterial materi-als on surfaces. For this, the bio-

cidal agent silver phosphateglass is added during produc-tion. It interrupts the functions ofcell membranes, thus preventingthe reproduction of bacteria onthe surface. Silver possessesnatural antibacterial properties. Itputs a stop to more than 99.9per cent of bacteria.

Hygiene around the clockOBO plastic device installationducts are already a part of theelectrical equipment of manyhealth-care facilities. When in-stalled on the wall, they allow rapidaccess to power and data. Withtheir antibacterial coating, thetried-and-trusted products offer anadditional hygienic benefit in treat-ment areas and patients' rooms. We ensure the germicidal actionduring the manufacture of the de-

vice installation ducts. Silver phos-phate glass is added to the plasticgranules before extrusion and mix-es itself into the material. Thismethod means that more than99.9 percent of bacteria have nochance of survival on the finishedproduct. There are additional func-tional benefits: Sockets, data tech-nology elements and small switchranges can be inserted into theducts without visible gaps.

Antibacterial action of silverSilver ions of our partner SANITIZED AG are notharmful to people or the environment. They have beenapproved for contact with foods. Comprehensive test-ing and certificates document the quality of this an-tibacterial equipment. Even germs which are resistantto antibiotics, such as MRSA, are rendered harmless.

Suitable for high hygiene require-mentsOBO sheet steel and aluminiumdevice installation ducts stand outboth functionally and aestheticallyin hospitals, care homes and geri-atric homes. Thanks to the an-tibacterial coating, they also fulfilhigh hygiene requirements. Evenduring the manufacture of the de-

vice installation ducts, OBO Better-mann adds a silver-based additiveto the powder coating. Thismethod offers long-term protectionagainst bacteria formation: Com-pared to untreated surfaces, theamount of germs on the surface isreduced by about 99 per cent. Theimpact of the additives remains in-tact in the powder coating for

many years. In addition, this manu-facturing technique offers long-term protection against corrosion. The device installation ducts canbe cleaned easily with many ap-proved disinfection agents, withoutrendering the agent inactive.

Antibacterial powder coatingThe silver-based antibacterial coating destabilises the cell membrane ofbacteria, preventing their reproduction. A broad range of impacts againstgram-positive and gram-negative bacteria has been proven. Compared tonormal wiping disinfection, the preventive protection exists 24 hours aday rather than for only a few hours.

Comprehensive product rangeThe electrical building infrastruc-ture in health-care facilities is anetwork of widespread systems. Itworks mainly invisibly, althougheach building requires it to func-tion reliably. OBO cable supportsystems reliably run energy, powerand data where they are required:To the operation and treatmentarea, to the administrationarea  and the patients' rooms. We

also secure the routing of largevolumes of cables with a compre-hensive product range. Thisranges from light-duty mesh cabletray systems through strong cablesections to luminaire support rails.A wide range of accessories, sur-faces and materials ensure a per-fectly fitting installation, even atlarge installation densities.

Ready for practice2.8 kilometres of cable trays in Klinikum Heiden-heim hospitalIn Klinikum Heidenheim hospital, OBO equipped anew dormitory for 270 patients with 2,800 metres ofRKSM Magic cable trays of different sizes. The ambi-tious schedule meant that the quick and easy-to-mount Magic products were the right choice, as thepatented plug connection makes tedious screwing su-perfluous. The OBO cable trays were used to mountrouting systems with E90 function maintenance aswell as escape route installations, amongst otherthings. Rising sections, brackets and E90 strain re-liefs act as further elements for function and safety. The OBO project planners also created appropriatemounting solutions for the interfaces to the other func-tion units frequently installed in the corridors. OBO systems for preventive fire protection

Fire protectionMajor deployment for patient safety

Safety around the clock - for health-care facilities, a self-explanatory aswell as challenging task. OBO can make an important contributionthrough tested systems for preventive fire protection.

In Germany, a fire occurs at a hospital once every 14days. There is a fire in a geriatric home almost everyweek. Many patients and residents have great difficul-ty escaping on account of their physical disabilities. All too often, it is the rapid smoke development thatendangers them. In addition, a fire in a facility will alsocause serious material damage and a loss of confi-dence. If there is a fire, safety-relevant electrical sys-tems must function for as long as possible to protectthe lives and health of patients, residents, personneland visitors. With OBO systems, planners and opera-tors have key components for the complete fire pro-tection and function maintenance of their building.

Care homes faced with new fire protection require-mentsIn Germany, eleven people died from fires in carehomes and geriatric homes in 2014 and more than100 people were injured. Frequently, it is the resi-dents themselves who leave candles burning, do notswitch off electrical appliances or who smoke in se-cret. In addition, a fire finds plenty of fuel, such as cel-lulose and mattresses. In recent decades, the require-ments for the structural equipment of care facilitieshave changed fundamentally. Today, they are hometo increasing numbers of people suffering from de-mentia. New concepts, with living groups or housecommunities, also present new challenges to struc-tural fire protection. 12

Three fire protection aims whichevery health-care facility must fulfil

The practical, tried-and-trusted OBO systems fulfil allthe requirements for fireproof electrical installationsfor the complex electrical infrastructure of health-carefacilities. Our portfolio makes us one of the fewproviders with a product range which covers all threeprotection aims of constructual fire protection:1. Limit the spread of the fire2. Protect escape and rescue routes3. Guarantee electrical function maintenance

First protection aim:Preventing the spread of firesThe longer a fire can be limited to certain structuralsections of a hospital or care facility, the better. Theremaining parts of the building are then protected fora defined period of time. This offers valuable extratime for the evacuation of people and the initiation ofextinguishing measures.

OBO insulation stays tightOBO insulation maintains the function of the fire sec-tions, thus preventing a rapid spread of fire andsmoke. The insulation is designed for different walltypes and the cables or pipes routed therein.

OBO systems for preventive fire protection

Systems for escape route installationkeep the path free

Second protection aim:Protect emergency and escape routesEmergency and escape routes are of decisive impor-tance to the safety of people in hospitals, care homesand geriatric homes. For this reason, it must be possi-ble to use them safely at any time. Safe means free ofsmoke, fire and obstacles. The longer people can useescape routes, the greater the chances that they willescape the fire and dangerous smoke.

OBO systemsfor escape route installationOBO can offer a comprehensive programme of testedfire protection systems for the protection of emergen-cy and escape routes in health-care facilities. Theproduct range comprises fire protection ducts, fireprotection bandages and grouped supports, metalpressure clips, cable trays for mounting above sus-pended fire protection ceilings and much more. Es-cape route installation takes place above false ceil-ings.

Systems for electrical function maintenance secure thefunction of safety-relevant systems

Third protection aim:Maintaining the electrical functionWhen a fire breaks out, every minute is crucial, partic-ularly with people with physical disabilities. Functionmaintenance of the electrical systems exists when thecurrent flow is not interrupted during a fire. Thismeans emergency and escape routes remain usable.Important technical equipment in health-care facilities, such as emergency lighting, fire alarm systems andextraction systems and extinguishing systems, contin-ue to function. The longer these systems work, thegreater the chances of rescue are.

OBO systems forelectrical function maintenanceOBO systems can withstand the heat of the fire over acertain period of time without any impairment of thefunction of the safety cables. From cable trays to junc-tion boxes, all the systems have been tested accord-ing to national and international standards. This offerssafety to the operators of health-care facilities in timesof need.

Ready for practiceSchwarzwald-Baar-Klinikum hospital FreiburgThe new building of Schwarzwald-Baar-Klinikum hos-pital, completed in 2012, stands out through its char-acteristic data: A usable floor space of 46,000 squaremetres, 750 hospital beds and 15 modern operatingtheatres. In a building of this size, structural fire pro-tection is a central safety requirement. OBO makes acontribution to this with its E30/E90 function mainte-nance systems. The systems withstand the heat of thefire over a specified period of at least 30 or 90 min-utes, without any impairment of the function of the ca-bles. This is valuable time, which is required for theevacuation of the hospital. OBO provided a largenumber of certified, high-quality products, includingclips and profile rails for individual cable routing. Thesystems used meet the directive DIN 4102 Part 12and the cable systems directive (LAR).

OBO transient and lightning protection systems

Integrated lightning and surge protection

Lightning strikes around 1.5 million times a year inGermany. Time and again, its destructive force endan-gers people, building sections and technical devicesin health-care facilities. An integrated lightning andsurge protection concept offers reliable protection.

Health-care facilities are obliged totake preventive measures againstdirect lightning strikes. OBO tran-sient and lightning protection sys-tems reliably protect people, sys-tems and medical equipment. Onlywhen all the components are in-stalled in and on a building isthere effective protection.

Interception and arresting systemsreliably arrest direct lightning strikes with energy of upto 200,000 A and conduct them through the arrestersinto the earthing system.

Equipotential bonding systemsform the interface between external and internal light-ning protection. They ensure that dangerous potential differences arenot created in the building.

Earthing systemssend around half the energy into the earth. The otherhalf is distributed via the equipotential bonding.

Ready for practiceKnappschaftskrankenhaus Bottrop hospitalWhen Knappschaftskrankenhaus Bottrop hospital wasrenovated, the new intercom system, the control ofthe electrically operated roller shutters and the ar-rester unit of the lightning protection system were allrouted on the exterior facade. This created numerouscrossovers with the lightning protection systems, inwhich the separation distance was not maintained.Should lightning strike the lightning protection system, conventional non-insulated routing of the arrestersalong the building facade would couple lightning cur-rents into the building. Thus, the hospital operator de-cided to use the OBO isCon® arrester. This insulatedarrester maintains the necessary separation spacingalso in the area of the crossovers, simply and to thestandard requirements, and runs the lightning currentsafely into the earth. A total of 400 metres of theisCon® arrester was installed.

Comprehensive safetyCurrent statistics and estimates ofinsurance companies show thatdamage levels caused by surgevoltages have also increased mas-sively in health-care facilities, dueto the growing dependency on theelectrical infrastructure. Besidesdamage to devices, expensive di-agnostic and treatment equipment,a failure of networks - and the cor-responding loss of data - must beexpected.

Electrical devices, communicationsystems and data networks aredamaged considerably more fre-quently by surge voltages than bydirect lightning strikes to the ap-propriate building. Even at a dis-tance of several hundred metres, the voltage surge of a lightningstrike can have a significant effecton the electrical infrastructure of ahospital. Switching operations with-in power networks can also createsurge voltages. Therefore, effective

surge protection also forms a bar-rier against other power line inter-ference. OBO surge protection de-vices ensure controlled equipoten-tial bonding of energy and data ca-bles under voltage. They react be-fore the insulation in electrical andelectronic devices can be de-stroyed by surge voltages. Theyare tested according to the rele-vant standards at the in-house BETtest centre.

•Effective protection for energy technology, telecom-munications and data technology

•Comprehensively tested safety according to interna-tional standards

Huge surge voltage spreads out in the hospital"When lightning struck Ludwigsfelde hospital in July2013, it was entirely unclear how much damage thiselectrical strike of millions of volts had done. Threelifts, all the telephones and most of the patient TVsstopped working. The fire brigade was able to free aman from a lift after a quarter of an hour and the firealarms and an intercom had failed in the surgical dor-mitory. The lightning had struck the television aerial ofBuilding A, the dormitory of the surgical division, oneof the highest points of the hospital. The huge surgevoltage spread out into multiple buildings. Seven elec-trical systems failed. The operating theatres and inten-sive care station were far enough away and were un-affected. As communication was only possible via mo-bile and emergency telephones, the hospital was un-able to take new patients for several hours.
