Concept of Circles, Arcs and Curve in Oblique Drawing

The shape seen from the front view are drawn in full scale and constitute the actual surfaces in an oblique projection. While the side and top views are drawn based on the receding axis position.

The circles, arcs and curves which are parallel to the oblique projection are considered the actual object shapes and sizes. These shape can be drawn directly using compass and other drawing tools.

Concept of Circles, Arcs and Curve in Oblique Drawing

The circles, arcs and curves can be shown in their actual shapes in oblique drawing when they are parallel to the front surface.

A circle on a receding plane appears to look like an ellipse and its construction is made by using the coordinate or four-centre method.

Orientation Selection Selecting the best orientation is important in

construction oblique drawing. The best orientation for drawing circles, arcs and curves are shown in figure below.

These shapes are placed parallel to the surface of front projection plane so that the actual shape can be drawn directly using a compass.

Objects with long dimensions are best placed parallel to the front projection plane.MENU

Frame Method

This method is used to construct object with circular or arced surfaces.

The shape is constructed based on the circle centre.

The object position is set so that the circular surface always face the front and parallel to the projection plane.

Construction of Circle on Oblique Axis

Circle and arcs located to the parallel to the front surfaces will show the real object shape and may be drawn directly using a compass

A circle or an arc that is not parallel to the front surface will appear like an ellipse

There are two method : Four Center Method Coordinate Method

MENU

OBJECTIVE NOTES VIDEO GAMES EXERCISES HOME EXIT

Page 39: Oblique Drawing

Four Centre Method

• This method is used to construct cavalier oblique drawing only.

• The construction is based on a full scales rhombus on the receding axis

Coordinate Method

The coordinate method is a method of drawing circles or arcs on the receding axis

When the size of the receding axis is smaller, the size of the corresponding circle or arcs will also be smaller

The method in dimensioning oblique drawings is the same as in isometric drawing.

The general dimensioning practice such as dimension and direction lines, arrow pointer and additional line must be

adhered.

Examples of a cavalier oblique drawing dimensioning in aligned system and oblique cabinet drawing in unidirectional

system are shown .
