Bulimia: a cycle of bingeing (eating large amounts) on food and then purging (throwing up, diarrhea)

Most people who are bulimic are average body weight

Warning Signs: Evidence of eating large amounts of food in a short period Purging behaviors, including frequent trips to the bathroom

after eating, smell of vomit, use of laxatives Excessive exercise Unusual swelling of the cheeks or jaw area Discoloration or staining of the teeth Calluses on the knuckles from self-induced vomiting

Treatment options

Inpatient hospital setting: for severe cases of anorexia and bulimia

Outpatient treatment center

Both options will often include the following services: Nutritional counseling Psychological support Medication management (Antidepressants: help with mood, anxiety and

depression)

Goal of Treatment for Bulimia: Cut down or eliminate binge eating and purging Treat psychological issues such as distorted body image and low self esteem Achieve long term rehabilitation or full recovery

Goal of Treatment for Anoroxia: Increase weight Treat psychological issues such as distorted body image and low self esteem Achieve long term rehabilitation or full recovery
