As I sit here writing this letter, I find myself thinking about our recentjourney to the CHA show in Anaheim, CA (when you live in a climate likeours, a trip south in February is very welcome). What fun we had –meeting with friends, old and new; checking out all of the beautiful andinspiring new products; and enjoying the fresh, bright and invigoratingspring colours that were a common theme in so many booths.

Once again, the artwork in the booths was stunning (it never ceases toamaze me that there is so much talent out there) and we arrived homeanxious to not only showcase some of this talent in Scrapbook & CardsToday, but to also spend time implementing some of the great newtechniques that we picked up along the way. There is no shortage ofcreative energy in this industry, and it is our goal to continue to showyou the latest and greatest in product, technique, and trend in eachissue.

Kerry, Kim, and I arrived home, and, once we had greeted our familieswith many hugs and kisses, immediately continued planning the busyyear ahead. Between teaching at ScrapFest in Kitchener, sponsoringthe CreativFestival in both April and October, and traveling to Chicagoin July, it is shaping up to be a busy few months. We have so much in

store (pardon the pun) for our readers this year and we are so excitedto bring you the spring ’08 issue of Scrapbook & Cards Today.

Wishing you many hours of creativity,

Two more takes on our “Little Lady” spring ’08 cover.

We asked three designers to work with our cover photo and, becausethey did such a beautiful job, we just had to show you!

We loved Holly’s fresh and fun take on “Little Lady.” The scal-loped eyelet border and the embellished flowers make the pagefeminine, youthful, and spring-like. And, what little girl doesn’tlove a little bling?

Welcome spring! After the long and snowy winter that we have hadhere in Toronto, I am so happy to say those words. With the arrival ofspring comes a multitude of events and occasions to both celebrateand…scrapbook! A brand new season brings with it a brand newpalette of fresh colours, an abundance of yummy themed products, and a resurgence of creative energy. I, for one, will gratefully welcomethe extra hour of daylight that will permit both additional outdoor photoopportunities as well as more time to spend creating.

The arrival of spring also means the arrival of this – the 9th issue ofScrapbook & Cards Today and the celebration of our 2nd birthday! from Maya Road’s Journey of a Life-time contest. In our fall ’07 issue,we asked our readers to tell(through journaling), or show(through artwork), their definition ofa memorable journey. We receivedsome great layouts with stories oftrips to faraway places and tales of

visits to reunite with long-lost friends and family. The winning entry was fromSophia Allison of Durban, South Africa with her layout entitled, “My Great Es-cape.” Sophia’s layout beautifully incorporated both the “telling” and the “show-ing” aspects of the contest; with well-written journaling and remarkablephotography. Here is an excerpt from Sophia’s journaling: “I treasure the times I have spent here, even if they have been few and far be-tween. It has been my heaven on earth, where all dreams are possible.” - Sophia Sophia will receive a fantastic prize package from Maya Road.

loves a challenge…

“When I receive your magazine I create a list of 'challenges' for myself from all ofthe great ideas in the magazine. I put each challenge into a container and beforestarting a new layout I randomly draw a challenge and do what it says. I find thiskeeps my pages fresh and reminds me to use tools or products that I have storedin my ever-growing stash of scrapbook supplies.

My only suggestion for improvement would be to break down the embellishments portion of the page supply lists so that we know what the embellishment is andwhat company made it.”

caught our eye immediately!

Conjuring images of warmspring days and the

resurgence of Mother Nature, first glance told us we

had found our something special.

Made from an old, recycledwooden frame, it wasfirst painted with acrackle medium. Next, the

bird and wildflower images were

stamped with acrylicpaint onto transparen-cies. Finally, for a three-

dimensional look, the imageswere layered inside the

team

Tina WernerTina’s love of bright, bold colours (orange, green, pink and turquoise) and her amazingskills with stamps lend themselves well toher artistic, collage-inspired scrapbookingstyle. Tina is thrilled to finally have her ownscrap room (her husband eventually tired ofmoving the “piles” from the dining roomtable) and can frequently be found thereworking on layouts featuring her two sourcesof inspiration: daughters Mia and Sophie.

2008

Roxanne JegodtkaAs a busy mother of five, Roxanne loves thecreative outlet that scrapbooking brings toher life. From a practical standpoint, it helpsher deal with the masses of photographsthat naturally accumulate from having fivechildren ranging in age from 8.5 to 3! Alover of the colour green, cardstock, andanything containing chocolate, Roxanne de-scribes her style as very clean and classic.

Christine Hill Christine continues to bring her orderly, clean, and detailed personality to the SCTdesign team. A self-proclaimed “photojunkie,” Christine sees scrapbooking as anatural extension of her photography“habit.” An accountant and mother of twoby day, Christine enjoys late nights spent inthe back corner of her basement, surrounded by all things QuicKutz and amile-high pile of Bazzill cardstock.

Kim Hughes Kim’s enthusiasm for the paper craft indus-try is contagious! Ever aware of new trends, great product releases, and inspiring ideas,Kim makes it a priority to both scrap andblog everyday (oh, and to eat ice cream). When she’s not creating, Kim can be foundhanging out with her husband and two chil-dren, going for long hikes, or drawing. Kim’sfavourite colour combination? Red, robin’segg blue, and taupe.

Michelle EngelMichelle’s positive energy is apparent inher clean, happy layouts, in her love ofbright colours, and in her huge collection ofacrylic stamps! High on her priority list for2008 – take her kids ice skating, build herphotography business, inherit some morechipboard (a girl can never have too much, you know), and convince her family mem-bers that mint chip ice cream really is theBEST!

Holly Pittroff Holly loves her in-home studio where shecan close the door and never have to cleanup! Always up for a challenge, Holly thinksthat hybrid scrapbooking and anythingacrylic are currently the best things going. All that Holly would need to wallpaper an en-tire room in her home? A roll of tape and her“stash” of patterned paper! Holly’s mostcreative time of day? In the morning, rightafter the coffee kicks in!

Kimber McGrayKimber joins the ranks of the other talented, basement-dwelling scrapbookerson our team! Kimber finds inspiration inthe everyday, in home décor magazinesand in stores like Target and Anthropologie. When she’s not scrapbooking, Kimber canusually be found chasing her two childrenaround (both indoors and out), surfing thenet, or indulging in just a taste of darkchocolate.

ourdesignWe would like to take a moment to introduce this talented group ofindividuals. Consistently rising to each and every challenge they aregiven, this group brings a wealth of experience, expertise, and excellence to the team at Scrapbook & Cards Today.

thinking outside the box…

Boxes getting you down? Squares lost their appeal? Rectangles just not up tosnuff?

It is time to re-invent the way you journal on your page! With some help from ourdesign team, we will show you how easy it is to take your journaling boxes from“drab” to “fab” in a few easy steps.

We asked Kim, Michelle, Tina, and Roxanne to share their secrets for creatingunique, inspiring, and visually appealing ways to display the written word.

our designers share their greattips for taking your journaling upa notch!

Kim says: "My journaling focuses on what my daughter

wished for on her Birthday. I wanted the curls to

flow around the page and bring the eye back to

the photos. I think the curl gives it a whimsical,

almost magical, appeal.”

How to do it:1. Draw a swirl (or flourish) on the back of

cream cardstock.

2. Cut out the flourish and smooth the edges

with your scissors or Exacto knife.

3. Hand-write your journaling making sure to

turn the paper as you follow the curve.

4. Trace over the words with a glitter pen to

add some sparkly shimmer.

Roxanne says:“For my journaling box on this layout, I really

wanted to add dimension. I also wanted to add

contrast to the darker, busier piece of pat-

terned paper near the bottom of the layout.”

How to do it: 1. Cut a 3x3 piece of white cardstock.

2. Punch .5 inch circles from aqua paper;

adhere around edge of journaling box,

adding dimensionals behind every other

circle.

3. Add more detail by hand-drawing a circle

around the edges of the alternate circles

(i.e. the ones that are not “popped.”)

Other ideas to try:

• Add other decorative edges to your journaling boxes – scalloped or pinked edges are easy to achieve and very effective

• Try adding ribbon around the outside edges to add texture• Add some fun stitching • Incorporate both hand-written and typed elements to mix things up• Create interesting stamped borders• Incorporate a theme from your layout into your journaling box

Our designers had fun creating these quick, easy, and unique ways to display theirjournaling. Tired of the “same-old” look of lines of text within the constraints of fourright angles, Kim, Tina, Roxanne, and Michelle were inspired to think outside ofthe box and add both interest and impact to their layouts. So, the next time you findyourself un-inspired by the words on your page, try one of these great “quick-fix”techniques and take the look of your journaling up a creative notch!

Tina says: "Instead of journaling on the front of the die-

cut journaling box, I chose to stamp an

introduction and turn it into a tiny story book.

I added a hinge as binding so it's easy to flip

it open to read what’s inside."

How to do it: 1. Stamp bird onto front of journaling box

die-cut with a light coloured ink, then

stamp title in darker ink following the

curve of the circle.

2. Cut out a circle the same size as journal

die-cut and add hand written journaling.

3. With brads, attach a hinge to join the

two circles.

4. Adhere to layout.

Michelle says: “I love to use transparent journaling boxes on

my layouts. They add instant visual interest

and a unique texture to any project.”

How to do it: 1. Add title using felt letters and letter

stickers to square journal box.

2. Add journaling to both boxes using a

white paint pen; let dry.

3. Add a white gelly gem to the flourish for

some interest.

ThinkingOutsidePG2326:Layout 1 3/13/08 12:00 PM Page 3

Michelle says: “Solvent ink (like Staz-on) makes it so easy to turn a regular old transparency into a fun and interestingbox for your journaling.”

How to do it:1. Stamp image on patterned paper with a light coloured pigment ink.2. Apply rub-on down left side of transparency.3. Stamp image on transparency with black Staz-on.4. Create lines for journaling – either with a stamp, or with a ruler and a permanent pen.5. Layer transparency over patterned paper and adhere with 3 brads.

Roxanne says:“This journaling box was so fun to do. I wanted to find a quote that would work with my theme and mypaper, and also give me the ability to write a secret message with the letters.”

How to do it: 1. Cover chipboard frame with patterned paper.2. Type quote in white text on coloured paper, making sure to leave space for the additional letters;

cut text into strips.3. Adhere rub-on letters on white cardstock; cut out and adhere to strips.4. Adhere strips to chipboard frame with foam squares. 5. Adhere butterfly with foam squares at the top for interest.

Kim says: "I wanted to make a very ‘girly’ journaling box that was both fresh and cute. To do this, I framed the die-cut square with pink buttons for some added dimension. I also added a bumblebee rub-on for playfulness, and an arrow for some contemporary flair.”

How to do it: 1. Cut a mat for the black and white journal die-cut from yellow patterned paper.2. Add buttons around the edge.3. Apply bee and flower rub-on accents.4. Hand-write journaling.

Tina says: “I created this unique journaling circle by combining some whimsical doodling with some hand-cut elements and a little dimensional adhesive. The result is fun, fresh, and draws the reader right in.”

How to do it:1. Doodle a scalloped edge on cardstock around the inner part of a circle and then cut it out.2. Add dimensionals to cardstock ring and place on top of cut out circle.3. Add dimensionals to word stickers and adhere to paper.4. Hand-write some of the words for added interest. 5. Add flowers with pop dots around circle edge in contrasting colours.

There is so much possibility when youhave a few stamps, some ink, and a touchof colour. When I first started stamping, Ididn’t own any chalk, special markers, ablender pen, or even watercolours. I simply inked my stamp and placed itdown - that was it! Since then I havelearned to experiment with a variety ofmediums to create an interesting colourpalette and the look of custom, hand-made embellishments.

In the following step-by-step, I used a mixof stamps and colour mediums to makean engaging frame around a photo of myfamily. I used a combination of water-colour pencils (mixed with a blender pen),watercolour cakes, markers, and ink.

Some helpful hints before you begin:

Using a pencil, sketch your inspiration; thisapproach will help you effectively transferyour vision to paper (see Step 1)

Choose the stamp sets, the colour scheme, the photo, and the mediums you will be working with

Try sticking to 5 colours (or less) for your first design

Remember to keep bringing the photo back to your design as you progress – this way you can make sure that the end result stays true to your original vision

your designs

Step 4 – add your photo and embellish

Add a matte to your photo to cover your tracing lines and adhereit over top of your frame. Embellish your page using any of thefollowing: ribbon, brads, punched or die-cut shapes, etc.

Step 1 - sketch your design

Starting with a piece of white cardstock, trace aroundyour photo with a pencil. Next, create a rough sketchof your “vision.”

Step 2 - stamp your images

Start stamping around the traced lines with Staz-onink, thus creating a frame for your photo. Try par-tially “hiding” some of the images behind the photo.

Step 3 – colour your images

Using markers, watercolour pencils, crayons, or chalk, colour your frame using your photo as a colour guide.

digital techniques for paper scrapbookersthe best of both worlds

by Audrey Neal

Hybrid scrapbooking’s popularity is growing by leaps andbounds, thanks to many high profile designers using hybridtechniques in their work; as well as to an increase in the avail-ability and variety of great and easy-to-use digital tools. As a re-sult, more and more attention is being given to hybridtechniques that can be used to enhance both your photos andyour stories. Even if you’re firmly planted in one camp or theother, there are times when using techniques and materialsfrom a different medium can really take your designs to thenext level.

Of course, the foray into hybrid scrapping comes with its ownlearning curve. Becoming familiar with a photo-editing programsuch as Microsoft’s Picture It! or Photoshop Elements is valu-able, but not completely necessary. The ability to perform basicphoto edits and combine digital files is possible in simple wordprocessing programs such as Microsoft Word, although theseprograms lack the full range of commands and possibilitiesthat are available in more extensive graphics programs.

One area of hybrid scrapbooking (that I seem to turn to timeand again) involves both simple and advanced techniques forediting and altering my photographs.

Photo editing software allows me to:

Convert colour prints to black and white Customize the size of my printsEnhance photos with frames or brushes Fix small flaws Restore heritage photos Change or brighten colours and/or their opacity Blend and/or blur elements

If you have been waiting for the opportunity to try some of thesegreat hybrid techniques, but haven’t known how to begin, thenthis article’s for you!

Read on for some of my favourite techniques:

editor’s note: Whether you’re a paper scrapper looking for ways to en-hance your photos and journaling, or a digital scrapper looking to get downand dirty with paper and glue, hybrid scrapbooking offers limitless possibili-

ties for combining paper with digital scrapbooking skills and supplies. “TheBest of Both Worlds” is a four-part series designed to share a range of hybridtechniques for photos, paper, embellishments, titles, and journaling.

Worth a Thousand Words

Why not start with a technique that’s squarely in your comfort zone?Adding text to your photos is one of the simplest and most effective ways to embrace digital scrapbooking techniques. Holly’s“adorable” layout shows you how easy it is to use text boxes to printyour journaling and titles directly on top of your photos. It’s a greatway to add dimension and visual interest to your page while preserving space. This technique works best with photos that havean offset focal point and feature a large amount of “dead space,”such as sky, asphalt, wall, or other open areas.

Brush Yourself Off

One of the easiest ways to define yourphotos and make them stand out from therest of your page elements is to useframes or brushes. You can opt for some-thing simple, like a subtle black outline, oryou can really grunge things up with an elaborate brush frame. Brushes and frames areadded on top of your photographs; another great option is to add a digital mask below your photograph, so that thephoto takes the shape of the mask. Even though the results canseem complicated, adding a digital frame to your photos only takesa couple of quick steps; in fact, the process is very similar to addinga text box.

I achieved a sheer look on my photo by print-

ing onto a piece of printable silk fabric paper.

This thin fabric is backed by a sheet of adhe-

sive paper and feeds right through your

printer just like regular photo paper. Allow

your image to dry completely before removing

the paper backing and adhering to your lay-

out with stitching, brads, staples, eyelets, or

many other creative options.

Holly used Microsoft Picture it! Photo Premium 9. For each image,

she used the command Text/Insert Text. She typed her journaling

and then edited the size, font and colour. Then, she printed her

pictures and completed the layout as she would a traditional page.

The More, The Merrier

For multi-photo scrappers, digital photo manipulation means beingable to reduce a photo’s size without having to crop it. Many scrappers also like to use programs such as Photoshop Elementsto “lay out” their designs before printing photos so they can eliminate the trial and error of getting the right sizes and positions.Creating a photo collage is a simple way to add a block of multiple photos to your layout without the tedium of measuring andcropping each image. Photo editing software programs allow you tocreate a large block of photos of either uniform or varying sizes, which you can then print just as you would a solo photograph.

Create, by Audrey Nealsupplies: patterned paper, BasicGrey, My Mind’s Eye, Hambly Screen Prints, Making Memories •chipboard letters, AmericanCrafts •alphabet stickers, BasicGrey •pen, Zig •corner rounder, Creative Memories •adhesive, Xyron

Feel free to combine techniques as

well. Even though I used

alphabet stickers to spell the word

“Art” in the lower left corner of my

photo collage, I could’ve easily

created this same effect by adding

a text box to my collage before

printing. Replacing one of my

photographs with a text box for my

journaling is another great and

easy option.

Audrey’s note: Although I swore I’d never make the switch to digital, I’ve found

that I truly enjoy the freedom to customize every single page el-

ement, down to the tiniest of details. Yet I know I’ll never give up

traditional scrapping either; there’s something very soothing

about digging out my paper and ink and really getting my hands

on a design. Fortunately, these two mediums work hand in

hand.

Two-Toned

Sometimes I want a really big graphic title for my layout, but I stillwant to have room for multiple photos. With the clipping mask technique, I can have both. I’ve found that this technique worksbest on layouts that use a number of landscape or scenic photos. This technique consists of three main layers – a black and whitelayer of photographs, a bold title (thick fonts work best) and a colourlayer of photographs. The colour photos are merged with the titleand then lined up on top of the black-and-white photos. This is afun way to draw attention to your focal point while including a titleand several photographs.

Incorporating digital techniques into your traditional designs (or viceversa) doesn’t have to be considered “going over to the dark side.”Instead, look at it as a way of enhancing your favourite techniquesand challenging your creativity. The best part is that you can useas many or as few of the techniques as you wish. There’s a wholenew world available to you – so give it a try today.

The clipping mask technique isn’t limited to photos and titles. You can clip

any two layers together using the same commands; try it with custom shapes

and photos, or with patterned papers to create unique accents and focal

points for your pages.

inspiring invitations

The invitation has graced us with its elegance and charm since the

early 1800’s. First used by the aristocracy both in England and in

France, Kings, Queens, Lords, and Ladies handwrote their

invitations on occasions of fêtes and other social gatherings.

Although they have come a long way since then, invitations are still

used to “request one’s presence” at many different events: from

baby and wedding showers, to garden parties and birthday

celebrations.

Whatever the occasion, these invitations are sure to inspire…

I chose soft colours for these invitations andplayed up the use of aged trims, soft florals, andglitter. I envisioned a little girl playing dress-up inher mother’s shoes, pearls, dress, and gloves. I lovethat we celebrate mothers in the very early days ofspring - the theme and colour palette are such aperfect fit.

celebratingmomby Virginia Nebel (and daughter Anna)

I keep everything that my daughter Anna makes forme. Sometimes it's a drawing, a card, or just asmall hand-written message. My heart melts everytime she presents me with one of her little gifts.Scrapbooking them is a beautiful way to re-livethose tender moments and to ensure the preser-vation of this endearing artwork.

In honour of Mother’s Day, I picked some of myfavourite pieces from my “collection” and made thissweet layout. Such joy will come from looking backon this in years to come.

I couldn’t wait to scrapbook all of these little treas-ures that Anna makes for me. I chose to use thefile folder and ledger paper to play up the “school-post-it-note” theme. I balanced this theme withsome feminine touches (the flower and the jewels)and added lots of hearts because…well, that kind ofgoes without saying!

My suggestions for creating a layout with thistheme:

Use minimal patterned paper so that the “busyness” of the artwork can take center stage

Include several different “mediums” (i.e. painting, drawing, writing samples, photographs) to help create the “collage” look that I achieved on this layout

Make sure you journal (even just on the back of thelayout) so that you don’t forget the significance of these little treasures

ask a designer “ the choice is clear”

by Kimber McGray

Many Thanks, by Kimber McGraysupplies: cardstock, Worldwin •patterned paper, We R MemoryKeepers •stamp, 7 Gypsies •ink, Tsukineko •acrylic butterfly,Pageframe Designs •rub-ons, We R Memory Keepers •brads,Creative Impressions

When stamping on acrylic, make sureyou use a solvent-based ink (like Staz-On). It is meant for non-porous

surfaces and has a quick drying time. Make sureyou press straight down and don’t “rock” thestamp or you may smudge the image (Un-do or aMr. Clean sponge will fix any mistakes, however).

I am seeing acrylic shapes everywhere! I love the lookof them, but am afraid to take the next step and actuallyuse one on my projects. Can you please tell me whereand how to begin?

Acrylic shapes are all the rage – due in part to their versatility (they can be stamped on, punched, and are easily adhered to) and in part to the natural appeal thatcomes with anything transparent (you can easily changetheir colour, layer things on top and underneath, and addinstant dimension). There is a rapidly expanding numberof products now available and, as is most often the case, along with more products comes more and more innovative ways to use them. Check out some of the waysthat I use acrylic shapes on my projects.

Because of its near-invisible quality, acrylic can take on many differentcolours and styles, and can

accommodate many different mediums. Just remember to hide your adhesive as best you can.Transparent glue dots work great for adheringbuttons, and the Vellum and more adhesive from3M is another great alternative to traditional“white” adhesives.

The slick surface of acrylic is perfect forapplying rub-ons. Another great technique is to use eyelets and brads to

either attach your acrylic shape to your project, ormerely to incorporate them as part of your design(acrylic punches easily using a Crop-a-Dile).

I took these fun photos of my daughter while wewere home in Texas visiting our property on thelake. I’m not sure that many girls can pass a fieldof flowers and not stop to pick any (and mydaughter is no exception). She is such a ham and

expert

easy,detailed,

by Kim Moreno

was more than happy to stop and let me get a couple pictures of her picking and en-joying the wildflowers. I love that I have captured this little piece of her childhood; socarefree and just being her!

In keeping with the easy theme, I used minimalpatterned paper and embellishments and keptmy design very clean. By using a wavy trimmer onmy patterned paper, I added some visual interestto an otherwise very linear page. I chose large let-ter stickers and rub-ons for a quick and bold title. To finish my page, I embellished using a largeflower that serves to balance my journaling block.

For my detailed layout, I kept the same stream-lined design but shook it up a bit by matting eachphoto on white cardstock and tilting the smallerphotos so that they lead the eye up to the focalphoto. By adding ink, rub-ons, and more pat-terned paper, I took this simple layout to the nextlevel. I removed the top wave so that it would notcompete with the added rub-ons and then Ibrought the colours from the bottom wave to thetop of my layout by adding a semi-circle above thelarger photo. A fun font adds personality to mytitle.

For my expert layout, there are only subtlechanges; these changes, however, were enoughto take my detailed layout to the expert level. Tak-ing the time to hand stitch along the bottom addsa homespun touch to my layout. To give the lay-out more dimension, I layered two felt flowers, added stick pins, and added a jewel to the largeflower. Note the jewels above my focal photo andon my journaling block; they create a visual trian-gle which helps lead the eye around the layout. Ionce again cut my title using a cutting system, butchose a cursive font to enhance the “girlie”theme. Finally, I added Diamond Glaze to my titleto help it “pop.”
