OANHSS – A Rich Tradition in NFP Seniors’ Care OANHSS will soon be celebrating its 100 th anniversary. As an association we have been supporting the not- for-profit seniors’ care sector as far back as 1919. Organizations came together at that time based on a common mission to provide care to the elderly and infirm. They had a shared belief in NFP delivery of services for seniors and that remains our focus today.

OANHSS – A Rich Tradition in NFP Seniors’ Care • OANHSS will soon be celebrating its 100th anniversary.

• As an association we have been supporting the not-for-profit seniors’ care sector as far back as 1919.

• Organizations came together at that time based on a common mission to provide care to the elderly and infirm.

• They had a shared belief in NFP delivery of services for seniors and that remains our focus today.

NFP Advantage • Volunteer Support

Benefit from strong volunteer support – OANHSS Benchmarking data for 2012 found non-profit homes benefit from 53.4 hours of volunteer time per bed per annum. Extrapolating this to all non-profit homes results in an estimate of just under 2.0 million hours or about 985 FTEs in volunteer time.

Are driven by their missions, not the bottom line.

Contributions to Care • Some of the results of non-profit contributions are directly measureable.

• Non-profit homes provide more hours of care per resident per day. Municipal homes lead the way with 3.32 hours of care per resident per day, followed by charitable homes with 3.22 hours and non-profit nursing homes with 3.17 hours, as compared to 3.09 hours in for-profit homes.

Resident Acuity – Aggressive Behaviours

The Aggressive Behaviour Scale (ABS) measures the frequency of occurrence of the four types of aggressive behaviour (i.e. verbal abuse, physical abuse, socially inappropriate and resisting care). Residents with scores of 1 to 4 are considered to be low to moderately aggressive and those scoring 5 and over are considered to have severe to very severe aggressive behaviours.
