Students across the state were required to take the Partnership for Assessment of Readiness in College and Careers (PARCC) tests last school year. Those OHS students in Algebra II and English III took the test. This data is used to de-termine how Oakwood students’ achieve-ments compare to the rest of the state.

In order to recognize their accomplish-ments and efforts on the PARCC, OHS has an incentive program. Those students who meet and exceeded the expectations of the PARCC were awarded shirts on January 22 with their last name and an “I’m a Comet” logo on the back empha-

sizing the “I met” to signify their work. OHS students who received these

shirts, seniors and juniors, will be treat-ed to extra rewards and trips each month for the remainder of the school year, but they must wear the shirts on those re-ward days.

Eighteen students met or exceeded the qualifications this year for English III, and seven met the qualifications for Algebra II. Senior Hannah Grubb met the qualifications on both tests.

The Oakwood Junior High Par-ent Team will be hosting a spaghetti fundraiser before the start of the varsity boys basketball game vs. Milford on January 29.

The free-will donation dinner will start at 4:30 p.m. in the high school cafeteria and will include spaghetti, bread, dessert and a drink.

They will also provide to-go con-tainers.

The proceeds will go towards helping the parent team and students of OJHS. The dinner will coincide with junior high athletic night at the high school.

Various junior high sport teams will be recognized that evening.

OHS will host OJHS on Jan. 29

Abby Foster, a member of the OHS Class of 2015, was recently crowned Miss Illinois County Fair Queen.

She was named Miss Ver-milion County Fair in 2015.

Foster beat out 69 other girls for the title. She is currently a freshman at Ball State, study-ing elementary education.

WYSE hopes for another titleThe OHS WYSE team will begin competition at the Regional on Febru-

ary 2 at DACC.The Comet WYSE team has won eight of the last nine Regional compe-

titions and is hoping to continue their success this year.The team will consist of eight seniors and six juniors. They will compete

in seven different categories.The 2016 WYSE team roster will look like this:

The Oakwood Community Edu-cation Foundation will hold their 10th annual banquet on March 5 at the Turtle Run Banquet Center.

The evening will include dinner, a bas-ket auction/raffle, and dancing with live music by Rhinestone Cowgurl.

The event will begin at 6 p.m.Tickets to the event, which raises

funds for the schools, will be $30 per sin-gle, and $60 per cou-ple.

Upcoming Athletic Events Cheerleaders ready for County competition

The OHS Comet cheerleaders will aim for a six-peat in the Vermilion County cheerleading competition on Sat, Jan. 23, at the Palmer Arena in Danville.

The competition will begin at 10 a.m. (the doors open at 9 a.m.) and the teams will have to perform two routines in front of the judges.

The winners will be announced at halftime of the boys championship game on Saturday night.

A student survey will be admin-istered at your child’s school called the Illinois 5Essentials Survey. Stu-dents in grade 6 through 12 will participate in the survey. This is the fourth year the Illinois State Board of Education will implement this survey across the state.

This survey is based on 20 years of research at the University of Chi-cago. It asks students about their experiences in school, giving school leaders critical student input to help develop school improvement plans.

If you wish for your child to not participate in the survey, please fill out the form that was sent via Alert-Now earlier. You may also down-load a copy of the form from our school district website at www.oak-wood.k12.il.us.

Please turn in the opt out form no later than February 13, 2016 if you do not want your child to par-ticipate.

Parents across Illinois will have an opportunity to participate in the fourth annual statewide Illinois

5Essentials Survey. This survey is designed to generate a detailed pic-ture of the inner workings of your child’s school.

As a parent, this opportunity will allow you to share your thoughts on the important elements of school ef-fectiveness in a survey about your child’s school.

Joel Shoemaker, the director of the Oakwood Public Library visited OHS to talk with Ms. Arnold’s English class about the resources available at the library for their use.

Shoemaker also brought registration forms and is-sued library cards to the students who did not already have one.

FAFSA Completion Night is Feb-ruary 10 from 6-7 p.m. in the Com-puter Lab.

ISAC Representatives will be available to help parents/students complete their online financial aid applications.

Students get their first library card!

The Orland Park Dental Service will be com-ing to OJHS to see students the morning of Thurs., Feb. 4.

OHS students who are to receive the exam will be transported to the junior high that morning.

All students are eligible for a dental exam by the dentist. Permission slips to participate in this school based dental clinic were included in your registration packets.

If you have not completed a permission slip and would like for your student to see the dentist, please contact the school nurse, Mrs. Sperry.

District to hold dental clinic

The boys basketball team will play Saturday night at 6:30 p.m. against Salt Fork for 3rd place in the Vermilion County tournament.

The Comet girls basketball team will play at 5 p.m. this evening in the 5th place game. They will play Hoopeston Area tonight.

Earlier in the week the Comettes and pep band performed.On Friday and Saturday nights, the County sportsmanship nominees

for volleyball and football will be honored. Kelsey Blackford will be honored for volleyball on Friday night before the girls championship game and Lee Mascari will be honored for football on Saturday night.

Admission for all events at the County tournament will be $4.The events are put on by the Vermilion County Principals Associa-

tion.

Data, Desserts & Decisions

Calling all PARENTS of sophomore students!

The Danville Area Community College Career and Employment Services office, along with Vermilion Vocational Education Delivery System and Vermilion Advantage are going to host the “Data, Desserts & Decisions” event for the parents/guardians of area high school sophomores. As a parent/guardian, you play a large role in your child’s career choice. At Data, Desserts & Decisions, information will be shared throughout the evening on all aspects of career planning, including non-traditional careers, dual enrollment, labor market trends, and growth opportunities in Vermilion County.

Invitations to the Data, Desserts & Decisions event will be sent directly to the parents/guardians of all sophomore students in the DACC college district. Please watch for this invitation to arrive at your home. Seating is limited so be sure to RSVP promptly. What could be better than picking up some new techniques to help your child find a successful career AND, delectable hors d’oeuvres & desserts? Nothing!

Each night the event will he held from 6:00 pm – 8:30 pm.
