About the Cover

In March 2016, Liberty Skylar Ara Rampersaud was admitted to Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital with a blood infection and soon diagnosed with vesicoureteral reflux, the backward flow of urine from the bladder into the kidneys. Under the care of Dr. Sam and the Paediatric Unit, Liberty is now back at home with her parents who are grateful for the exemplary care she received at OTMH.

Letter to DonorsWelcome to your new Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital. After more than a decade of planning, four years of construction, and the tremendous support of our donors, we have collectively delivered on the vision we promised so many years ago.

Throughout this report you will read about the incredible benefits patients are receiving that you made possible.

More than 28,000 donors contributed a record-breaking $65 million, surpassing the Foundation’s $60 million campaign goal to equip the opening day needs of the new Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital.

The “It All Starts Here” campaign, led by our incredibly dedicated and passionate co-chairs Bill Cooper and Eve Willis, inspired 17 gifts of one million dollars or more with the single largest gift being a $10 million transformational gift from Peter Gilgan.

This achievement demonstrates that a culture of philanthropy is alive and well in Oakville.

Although this 1.6 million square foot state-of-the-art healthcare facility that you helped equip is impressive, as donors you understand that it is not a building you are supporting. Your donations support the skilled and compassionate care that is happening every day inside this building.

Your donations allowed us to fund MRIs, CT scanners, patient beds, ultrasounds, blanket warmers – more than thirty thousand pieces of medical equipment.

The real impact of your gifts, however, will be felt in the months and years ahead when patients receive the exceptional care they need most when they turn to our hospital.

The enormous impact of your generosity will touch so many lives and it is truly meaningful.

Philanthropic support, like yours, has always been at the heart of OTMH and it will continue to be as we deliver exemplary care in our new facility. Your inspiring generosity and the evolution of Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital will always be mutually linked.

As we celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Oakville Hospital Foundation we look forward to sharing your impact as you continue supporting the emerging priorities of the Hospital into the next quarter century.

Thank you for your generosity, your trust, and your ongoing commitment to support OTMH with the latest and best technology to care for Oakville.

Yours in philanthropy,

Tina TrianoChief Executive Officer

One of two CT Scanners at OTMH.

Until a problem is detected, it can’t be treated. This is why diagnostic procedures performed across numerous departments at OTMH are so vital. Whether it is a pregnant woman requiring pre-natal ultrasound scans or a senior being monitored after suffering heart failure, the first step to recovery is the discovery that something is wrong. The use of diagnostic imaging technology is one of the greatest advances in medicine, enabling physicians to diagnose and treat their patients’ diseases safely and rapidly.

Computed tomography (CT) scans and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) produce high-definition scans that may shorten the length of hospital stays and decrease the high costs associated with hospitalization if used early.

Of all the diagnostic modalities, MRI is experiencing the greatest amount of technological change. Driven by medical innovation, new applications are constantly being developed in a multitude of areas including angiography, cardiology, breast imaging, perfusion/diffusion imaging, functional imaging and interventional procedures that will lead MRI to be used more frequently, in particular with acutely ill hospitalized and emergency patients.

CT scanning, sometimes called CAT scanning, combines special x-ray equipment with sophisticated computers to produce multiple images or pictures of the inside of the body. These cross-sectional images of the area being studied can then be examined on a computer monitor or printed. CT scans of internal organs, bone, soft tissue and blood vessels provide greater clarity and reveal more details than regular x-ray exams.

Thanks to donor support, Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital is equipped with two CT scanners and three MRIs, including a new 3T MRI providing higher quality pictures and the ability to image things that were not previously possible. These scans provide important information that the medical team can use for the prevention of heart attacks and stroke, the early detection and careful monitoring of cancers, and assessing brain function and neurological diseases.

Discovering Information That Can Change Lives

Behind the scenes at OTMH, the laboratory helps physicians diagnose, treat and monitor patients’ medical conditions. The laboratory supports the Hospital’s clinical team by providing vital diagnostic and monitoring services for 85% of patients. The lab in the new facility is transformed through partial automation providing faster results and reduced patient safety risks. The automated laboratory system is capable of performing two tests a minute putting vital information in the hands of physicians and helping them make treatment and care decisions faster. Other technological features include laboratory robotics which provide accurate processing of specimens and quicker delivery of lab results. Hidden behind the walls are pneumatic tubes that carry samples and medication to and from the laboratory, pharmacy and other hospital departments. In addition to processing haematology, blood gases and urinalysis tests, the core lab will soon feature flow cytometry which is key for ongoing monitoring of cancer patients undergoing treatment such as chemotherapy.

Peace of Mind through Wireless Fetal Monitoring

Wireless fetal monitoring provides important information about the health of a baby during labour and can identify complications before they become serious. The technology enables physicians to monitor a woman’s contractions and also the baby’s heart rate throughout the delivery process. The new wireless system allows the care team to see at a glance what is happening in each of the birthing suites. It communicates with physicians online and links to the patient’s electronic medical record.

Wireless fetal monitoring improves the birth experience for both expectant mothers and those caring for her.

OTMH’s automated laboratory system is capable of running two tests a minute.

Longtime OTMH donor Betty Birmingham issued a challenge last fall to match, dollar for dollar, any donations made towards interventional radiology. Her $250,000 gift in 2015 is in addition to the more than $8 million she and her husband Bruce Birmingham donated over the last 25 years to the Hospital.

The Birminghams know, from personal experience, how vital it is for residents to have access to life saving cancer treatments, close to home. Their transformational gifts have been a catalyst for life saving procedures which followed the early diagnosis of cancer and the driving force for making cancer care available in our community by equipping the Cancer Care / Medical Day Care Centre which is named in their honour.

Both as Honourary Campaign Co-Chairs and through their donations, Betty and her late husband Bruce have inspired volunteers, supporters and the talented team of healthcare professionals at Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital to play an active role in bringing the new Hospital to life.

Patients who require surgery at OTMH are benefitting from advances in medical technology that dramatically increase the ability to perform more precise and less invasive surgical procedures. As a result of these new minimally invasive techniques, patient recovery times are being reduced. Surgical procedures now often use smaller incisions and may not require an overnight hospital stay. With these advances, OTMH physicians and caregivers are committed to their goal of returning people to their lives sooner than ever.

Regaining Strength with Cardiac Rehabilitation

The Cardiac Rehabilitation Program is an individualized exercise and educational program designed to improve cardiovascular fitness for patients who have had some type of heart-related event including angina, heart attack, congestive heart failure, heart surgery, or angioplasty. The program includes medical evaluation, individually prescribed exercise programs, supervised exercise classes, and counseling and is run by a multidisciplinary team including a medical director, registered nurses, physiotherapists, dietitian, kinesiologists, social workers, and trained exercise supervisors. The program now has a dedicated space in the new Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital giving patients a safe and inviting environment to exercise and recapture some of the function they may have lost.

Vital Treatment through Vascular Surgery

Vascular surgery is a specialty in which diseases of the vascular system, or arteries and veins, are managed by medical therapy, minimally-invasive catheter procedures, and surgical reconstruction. OTMH’s greatly expanded program allows our team of highly-skilled vascular surgeons to access many regions of the body through major blood vessels. Surgery is used to treat specific diseased areas, to help prevent strokes or heart attacks, improve or relieve angina or hypertension, remove aneurysms, and save limbs that would otherwise have to be amputated. Donor funds have updated vascular operating equipment at OTMH to allow physicians to introduce new treatments such as carotid endarterectomy, a new surgical procedure to open or clean the carotid artery with the goal of stroke prevention.

Less Pain through Interventional Radiology

Interventional radiology is a medical sub-specialty of radiology which utilizes non-invasive image-guided procedures to diagnose and treat diseases in nearly every organ system. These procedures are usually performed using needles and catheters rather than by making large incisions into the body as in traditional surgery. Compared to open surgical procedures, the patient experiences dramatically less pain and a shorter recovery time.

Today many conditions that once required surgery can be treated less invasively by interventional radiologists – specialists able to provide targeted treatments that offer less risk, less pain and less recovery time compared to open surgery. The addition of new interventional radiologists at OTMH and new, leading edge technologies will enable OTMH to improve their ability to provide patients with the best possible care.

June and Ian Cockwell understand supporting Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital can improve the health of our community. With their family foundation Amarna, they donated $7.6 million to the campaign to equip the new Hospital. They also appreciate one gift is not enough which is why they encouraged others to join them by directing $6.75 million of their extraordinary donation for multi-strategy matching challenges. The purpose of the matching challenges was to inspire donors to elevate their giving sights when considering their own financial contribution to the campaign. The community responded enthusiastically and all matches were fully realized. The Cockwell family are true leaders in our community and are recognized for their lifetime of support of OTMH in our highest giving society – Altruist – having given more than $10 million to OTMH.

Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital was designed with patients in mind which is why the new environment supports the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual needs of our community. Understanding that family members play an important role in the healing process, the majority of single patient rooms include a couch that pulls out into a sleeper bed so that a family member can stay overnight with their loved one. Numerous outdoor spaces and courtyards serve the dual purpose of giving families and patients a quiet outdoor space and giving surrounding patient rooms access to natural light. Large prints and artwork can be found throughout the Hospital providing comfort, inspiration and joy as well as supporting the healing process or reducing stress in patients. Combined, these features help give patients the best experience in their journey to wellness.

Is there any moment in life more defining and exciting than the birth of a baby? In 2016, approximately 2,500 babies will be born at OTMH in the family-centred maternal child care department. The large, bright space provides our smallest and most vulnerable patients with the best possible environment to enter the world. The department features 11 labour birth recovery postpartum (LBRP) single patient rooms designed to allow mothers to progress through the whole birth experience in one place and give families more space to welcome their new additions. For babies who are born prematurely or who need special medical care, the Special Care Nursery features 10 bassinets in a well-designed area that gives families more privacy. The Hospital also has two courtesy rooms for mothers who have babies in special care and a care-by-parent room that gives parents whose baby has experienced an extended hospital stay an opportunity to practice looking after their child in a controlled environment before taking their baby home.

Better and Faster Healing in Patient Rooms

One of the most noticeable changes to the delivery of care at the new Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital is the single patient room. There are 80 per cent single patient rooms in the new Hospital. In addition to enhanced privacy, single patient rooms offer less noise, less disruption and additional protection from infection. Touch panels in the rooms give patients the independence to control room temperature and lighting. Each room also includes a pull-out couch giving a family member space to stay overnight. The room itself is filled with natural light thanks to large floor to ceiling windows that give patients the opportunity to see more of the view outside while lying in bed.

Efficient Urgent Care in theEmergency Department

Visiting a hospital emergency department can make anyone nervous. At the new OTMH, how urgent care is delivered to patients has been reengineered to help alleviate as much anxiety as possible. The waiting area has been designed to get people triaged and into a care area as fast as possible. From the initial waiting area, patients are taken to one of five triage rooms where they can register and a triage nurse can determine which part of the department they should be seen. In the acute area of the emergency department, patient rooms are enclosed by sliding glass doors which become opaque with the flick of a switch providing patients with increased privacy. The expanded emergency department at OTMH features 56 stretchers, additional clinical space, and a diagnostic imaging cluster which features two general radiology rooms for x-rays, an ultrasound room, and two CT scanners.

OTMH’s on-site helipad allows for the urgent transfer of critically ill patients.

In 2010, Peter Gilgan stepped forward to lead the way in helping to make the new Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital a reality by donating $10 million towards its creation. The $10 million gift is the largest contribution the Hospital, or any other organization in Oakville, has ever received. Peter’s historic $10 Million gift didn’t just set the pace for an exciting fundraising campaign, it also served as a catalyst for the entire community to work together to reach our campaign goal. The pacesetting gift created a new benchmark for philanthropy in our community.

In recognition of his donation, the hospital named the Patient Care Centre in his honour. Peter Gilgan’s extraordinary gift enables our entire community to have access to the technology and treatments that can help patients survive and flourish despite sickness and injury. As a community builder and philanthropist, the Peter Gilgan Foundation has made an enduring impact on the lives of families in Oakville.

Every year, individuals and groups in our community host a variety of events to raise funds for Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital. These events, along with the Foundation’s OTMH Sunset Cinema, OTMH Charity Golf Tournament, and OTMH Candlelight Ball, raised more than $2.5 million for priority equipment needs in 2015/16.

Whether you picked up a golf club or a hockey stick, rode a bike or jumped in the pool, or generously pledged a participant, your attendance and support of these events helped make quality patient care possible.

Stewards of Your Trust

We are pleased to report our 22% expense ratio is well below Canada Revenue Agency Guidelines (the position of the CRA is expense ratios under 35 cents for every dollar raised is unlikely to generate concern). The expense ratio calculation can differ between charities. When comparing our expense ratio to other charities, please note that the Oakville Hospital Foundation’s expense ratio factors ALL expenses, including events, salaries, and administrative costs.

Campaign Fundraising

The Oakville Hospital Foundation successfully completed a capital campaign to fund equipment to open the new Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital, most of which was purchased in 2015. Campaign pledge installments will be used to make final payments for ‘opening day’ equipment, while new donations are used to purchase new priority equipment, as needs are identified. This will enable the Hospital to continue to expand with our community and invest in enhanced technology.
