TRANSCRIPT
Dear parents and friends of the school,
Can I extend an enormous thank you to all of the par-
ents and children involved with our weekend tidy up of
the tennis courts! The fencing looks great, the kids had
fun and we all left with full stomachs. Your support is
much appreciated.
Important information – Please read below
In 2012, Oaklands Central School became involved with
two very unique programs. They are:
Empowering Local Schools National Partnerships
National Partnerships – Low SES
The bottom line with each of these initiatives is that we
have received significant funding and decision making
authority beyond that of MOST other public schools.
The money can be used to buy additional teaching re-
sources, reduce class sizes, improve teacher training/
development, and create greater equity for our students
living further away from resources than that of their ur-
ban peers.
A growing body of research shows that building effec-
tive partnerships between parents, families and schools
to support children‘s learning leads to better learning
outcomes. The whole school community benefits when
parental engagement is an integral part of school plan-
ning and improvement processes.
As the leader of Oaklands Central School, I would like
to see a continued strengthening of the already strong
relationships that we share between our school and the
homes of our students. That in mind, I would like to
encourage parents and community members to become
actively involved in the decision making that shapes the
way we educate the students. We will shape a plan to-
gether.
On Friday the 15th of March at 9am we are having the
first of a number of information and planning sessions
to increase student and community engagement. I
strongly encourage everyone to attend. Regardless, all
members of the community will be given the opportuni-
ty to have their say through surveys, focus group discus-
sions, etc. These will occur throughout the remainder of
the term. I appreciate your input and look forward to an
exciting future for our students, our school and our com-
munity.
Warm Regards,
Matthew Jacobson

Halfway through Term 1 has students showing good
progress. It was also great to see students do so well at
Zone Swimming, with Allanah Moloney only two
points off being the Junior Secondary champion. Re-
gional swimming will be in Leeton on Monday the 11th
for secondary students.
Mrs Marshall has been very busy planning the Transi-
tion Camp for Years 7 & 8 which will be held in Yarra-
wonga on the 13th and 14th of March. A great range of
activities is planned, ranging from canoeing through to
water slides, putt putt golf and team building activities.
Last week Mr Atkins spent two days in Wagga at the
Secondary Learning Strategy course, which will be im-
plemented across secondary to help students develop
skills in how they approach learning, improving its ef-
fectiveness. I attended on the Thursday since it focused
on implementing the strategies across secondary. Mr
Atkins will have another two two-day blocks in Wagga
later in the year to further develop the skills able to be
utilised.
Students in years 10 and 11 have had the opportunity to
travel to Albury TAFE every Wednesday afternoon and
it has been great to hear how they are going in the Auto-
motive course—both enjoying it and working towards a
nationally recognised accreditation (Certificate II).
With the Digital Education Revolution funding finishing
at the end of the year, the 2013 allocation of laptops is
on a different basis than previous years. This term we
are trialling Year 8 & 9 having laptops in their roll call
rooms charging and ready to use during the day but re-
turning each night. Years 10-12 will continue to be able
to take theirs home so long as they bring them in fully
charged and ready to use each day. We are hopeful that
alternative funding will be available to continue the pro-
gram in some form in 2014 and beyond.

COMMUNITY NEWS NSW SCHOOL-BASED VACCINATION PROGRAM
Each year NSW Health offers the vaccines recom-mended by the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) for adolescents as part of the school-based vaccination program.
In 2013 the following vaccines will be offered:
Diphtheria, Tetanus and Pertussis (Whooping Cough) vaccine for all Year 7 students
Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine will be offered to Year 7 male and female students, and to Year 9 male students, as a 3-dose course over a six-month period (students who commence HPV vac-cination in Year 7 but do not complete the course may be offered catch-up doses at school into Year 8)
Hepatitis B vaccine for all Year 7 students who have never received a course of hepatitis B vaccine when they were a baby
Varicella (chicken pox) vaccine for all Year 7 students who have not previously received varicella vaccine or had chickenpox disease.
Parent Information Kits will be sent home to parents/guardians. To consent to the vaccination of their child, parents/guardians are advised to read all the infor-mation provided, complete the Consent Form and re-turn it to their child’s school. Please ensure that your child eats breakfast on the day of the school vaccina-tion clinic.
Parents/guardians who wish to withdraw their con-sent for any reason may do so by writing to the school Principal. The Procedure for Withdrawal of Consent is available on the NSW Health website at www.health.nsw.gov.au/immunisation.
To improve vaccination completion, students will be opportunistically offered any missed doses throughout the year where possible.
Please note that for HPV vaccine only, parents/guardians must record their Medicare Number (all 10 digits and the 11th number beside the child’s name) on the Consent Form, as this is required to record the student’s information on the National HPV Vaccination Register and, for female students only, link to the Na-tional or State Cervical Screening Program. More information regarding the HPV vaccine can be found at this website www.australia.gov.au/hpv
A Record of Vaccination will be provided to each stu-dent vaccinated at the clinic. Parents/guardians should ensure that this record is kept for future reference and should not assume that their child has been vaccinated if they do not receive this Record of Vaccination.

Almost 2 years ago the Oaklands CWA Branch launched an initiative, The Oaklands Community garden project.
The project was to turn the existing unloved overgrown garden which is located on a major intersection of our town to a more functional usable area for the community to enjoy including elements to improve the streetscape and to promote our very own Oaklands Diuris (Oaklands Orchid) a rare indigenous spe-cies discovered in the Oaklands/Urana area, with Oaklands holding the largest known site. Local community members rallied behind our project helping fundraise the money for plants, mulch and a water system for the garden. They then gave their time in a huge working bee that saw the existing garden transformed. Urana Shire Council completed the new area with new footpaths and wheelchair access through the gar-den to the building. Finally seeing our plan come to life stage 1 was complete!
Month’s later stage 2 began with the installation of wonderful garden seating designed to complement the natural flow of ploughed fields in our agricultural area. The seats were designed and fabricated by Wagga artist John Wood and installation completed with the help of some very hard working locals. Local art student Demi Smith created the concept and design for our centre art piece. It included a large Tea Cup and saucer that held 3 intertwining Oaklands Orchid stems and flower, the concept was “CWA nurturing the growth and promotion of our Orchid”. The Orchid Sculpture was proving difficult to fund so once again the small town spirit of Oaklands kicked in and in a matter of weeks locals had band to-gether and bought Demi’s design to life with a 2m tall steel tea cup and saucer framing our rare Oak-lands Orchid. The beautiful Orchid stems and flowers were fabricated by Colin and Cameron Croft from C & R Mainfab
Engineering and the Tea cup & Saucer were fabricated by Lyndon Kerr and Kris Barr KBE Jindera every-
body will agree that the job though tricky has banded together beautifully and looks fantastic!
Just to finish off our sculpture myself and local artist Rebecca Tomlinson completed our art piece giv-ing the Orchids there true colour touches.
The CWA Oaklands would like to thank the above mentioned and everybody else who has given time, parts, plants, machinery etc to help see our project through. This has been a wonderful project to be a part of and wouldn’t have happened without the generosity of our small Community. The CWA would like to take this opportunity to invite the community to attend an open day for our garden on April 11th 10:30am at the Oaklands CWA rooms. This will include The official opening Cer-emony, a guest speaker on the Oaklands Diuris and morning tea. Thank you, Sarah Moloney President CWA Oaklands Branch
