As we enter this month, we recognize a couple of things…

We are at the mid-point Of summer; with all that comes with it: vacations and VBS; trips and time away; revitalization and renewal. It’s a time for celebrating the freedom of our Nation and the

freedom we have to do so many things as an American. It’s a time for gathering families for

cookouts or splashing at the shoreline. It may be time for catching lightning bugs in a mason jar or eating a mayonnaise slathered tomato sandwich on white bread, or fresh picked sweet

corn. Yummy!

Of the year; as we are officially in the second half of 2011, already! It seems like just a short

time ago that I challenged the Oakland family to nurture relationships with some folks who aren’t part of the church. How’s it going? God calls each of us to look to Him for worship and

discipleship. He wants us to love Him more, and when we do, we will want others to have the same experience, hence the need to develop and nurture relationships with others…

We have some great opportunities to involve non-Oakland folks in some non threatening opportunities. Vacation Bible School will be cranking up July 18-22 as we go to Jerusalem and

see how Jesus grew. VBS is an amazing opportunity for us to reach children with God’s wonderful message of love, acceptance, and forgiveness. When we reach the

kids we have a great opportunity to reach parents, too!

Everyone loves a ball game… and I’ve heard that our group going to see the Richmond

Flying Squirrels is getting close to 40! It will be a great time of fellowship on July 6.

Speaking of fellowship, it always blesses my heart when the Oakland family gathers in a circle and sings, “Bless Be the Tie that Binds.” It’s a tradition that we do when we have folks

profess Christ and unite with the church. We welcome Glenn Williams who presented

himself for membership, upon statement of his faith in Christ, as a candidate for Baptism. It has been a joy watching Glenn the past few months in worship on Sunday and Bible Study on

Wednesdays. He has been soaking up God’s word and it shows in the way that God is working through him.

In August we will have homecoming and revival services with the Rev. Dr. Randy Newsome,

pastor of Round Oak Baptist Church in Corbin, VA. Randy has been at Round Oak for over two

decades and has had the privilege of watching God move in awesome ways in the fellowship at Round Oak. I’ve known Randy since 1999 and have watched him minister in many different

ways. If you follow the activities of the Goshen Baptist Association, you may recognize Randy’s name as one of the professors for the Rural Institute for Theological Education. Don’t let the

word “professor” keep you away. Randy will make you laugh and maybe even shed a tear, as

he tells a story in the manner of a “country boy who’s been to town.” He will be with us for our Homecoming service on August 21 and also Monday through Wednesday evenings. He

may even bring a banjo or guitar along with him… so be in prayer for great days ahead.

As you pray, remember Mike and Virginia Sherrill who lost their house and many belongings

in a fire on June 14. Our missions committee is working closely with them to assist in their new start.

So happy summer! I’d love to see the bulletins from the churches you visit while on vacation!

Peace to you… and Joy in your Journey with Jesus. It great to serve as your pastor --- Rev Kev

Perkins is overwhelmed by the generosity of our congregation. They are so thankful for our support. Let’s keep generously giving so that those who are struggling will have food on the table tonight. Suggested items are: Packaged meals Mac & cheese Dried beans Canned veggies Canned spaghetti sauce Oatmeal Grits Pasta Rice Cookies Crackers Canned meats & fish Pancake mix Syrup Peanut butter Jams / jellies (store bought) Cereal Soup Toilet Paper Paper Towels

Stop Hunger Now responds to crisis around the world. Stop Hunger Now is committed to the mission of providing life-saving aid to the world’s most vulnerable and responding to those affected by natural disasters. Our organization fosters relationships among our network of partners to mobilize the most amount of relief aid possible in the shortest amount of time. Stop Hunger Now not only provides our meals packaged by our dedicated volunteers, but facilitates shipments of in-kind aid such as medical supplies, water, and food and

provides cash grants to support construction projects and medical treatment clinics. Click here to learn more about our response to recent crisis in Haiti, Japan and the Philippines. Stop Hunger Now volunteers have packaged more than 44 million meals since the programs' inception. Stop Hunger Now meals have been shipped to developing countries all over the world and have made an immeasurable impact on the lives of those that receive the meals. Click here to see an interactive map with number of meals received in each country served. With your continued support Stop Hunger Now can continue provide sustainable solutions to the more than 925 million people who face the everyday crisis of hunger while also serving as first responders to areas dealing with the devastating affects of natural disasters.

Did you miss the first Stop Hunger Now packing event? Mark your calendar now so you won’t miss this time! October 9 at 3pm at Craigs Baptist. All ages needed—especially Youth to help carry things, Adults to help pack, Seniors to weigh and seal the packets, Musically inclined to sing along, and everyone who can enjoy fellowship and a good time. The best part is that you will be helping hungry people receive a nutritious meal. The assembly process combines rice, soy, dehydrated vegetables and a flavoring mix including 21 essential vitamins and minerals into small meal packets. Each meal costs only 25 cents. The food stores easily, has a shelf-life of five years and transports quickly. To prepare for the Stop Hunger Now event, WOM will sponsor collection of Quarters (and any other monies) to purchase the supplies during March to August. Goal for Goshen is to purchase $10,000 worth of supplies. Let’s see if OBC can help contribute by sending $1,000 to purchase 4,000 meals!

2010 Virginia Baptist Annual The 2010 Virginia Baptist Annual has been sent to all BGAV churches and associations, and is also available for download. For the past several years, we have been producing the Annual in electronic format in order to be better stewards of the Cooperative Missions gifts that have been entrusted to us

for this publication, since the electronic version costs significantly less to produce than a print version. Download your electronic copy of the 2010 Annual. If you have no computer or limited access, please contact Linda Arthur at 800.255.2428, ext. 1272, to request a printed version. We pray that you will find the information on this CD valuable all year long.

Disaster Relief Services It's Hurricane Season! According to the National Hurricane Center in Miami, this season will be busier than normal, with up to 18 named tropical storms with 3-6 predicted to become major hurricanes. Virginia Baptist Disaster Relief Services works in partnership with the American Red Cross, the Salvation Army, Baptist convention’s, and other agencies to respond and bring relief and hope to those in

need. Virginia Baptist volunteers are the heart of the relief effort and new ones are always needed. Be ready to help in times of need by participating in Disaster Relief Training. Crisis Care Training August 18–19, 2011 Virginia Baptist Resource Center, Richmond, VA Cost is $125/person. Contact Jeannette Hildebrand by August 12 to register. Haiti Update Progress with our continued response to the earthquake in Haiti continues to be good. Volunteers teams are traveling to Haiti and working with our partners on a regular basis. Most of the work of the teams is the construction of new, permanent homes for families whose homes were destroyed during the earthquake. But, even better than the actual homes are the relationships that are being created in the community where we are working. Check out the latest photos on progress at the orphanage and home on our Facebook page and read the testimony of a team leader who led college students for a week in May on our website.
