Organizing and Alliances Monthly Team Meeting

August 5, 2010

Budget Update –

VP Memos – Paul O’Brieno Notes from the memo :

1. All work in Policy and Campaigns has to fall into a couple of areasa. Economic Justice

i. Climate Changeii. Ag/Trade

b. Haitic. Extractivesd. Aid Effectivenesse. Humanitarianf. Paul’s budget

2. Paul was given a total sum of money, and was not told how to divide it up amongst campaigns

a. He had to figure out how to divide up this money among campaignsb. Gina sat in on meetings with Paul where each team proposed a set of

goals (for EJ it was objectives)c. Friday, July 30th managers got their division of the money

3. Most units in our division took a budget cut for FY11

a. Last year we also had Rif funds – the applications that were approved for us this past FY (ex: Allies Advisor) were included in the budget for this year – our budget for FY11 is therefore a flat budget and there are no Rifs

b. Our OA unrestricted budget is smaller by approximately 25%

Alison Donnelly is the new Manager of Business Planning, Analysis and Systems in Financeo The new budget system is Oracleo Some of us got trained during the last 2-3 weeks on how to input information and budget

in Oracle

o Inputting of personnel and budgets (line items) was to be completed by end of day on Friday, August 6th

Jon is going to be with us for another 12 months (restricted) Sophia’s position is a 3 year restricted position We still have two open positions:

Regional Advocacy Lead Strategic Alliances Advisor

Our total budget numbers do not include OAAF money We are probably going to put extending Sisters on hold RiC Manger reports to Judy and is not under Gina’s cost center

Bad news –

o Golzar was hired for a year – (which started at the end of last November) to kick start our Control Arms campaign at the beginning of December 2009

The money for this position came from a grant that was only for Golzar and not for supporting work – because of the budget cut we had to cut the Organizing Control Arms work – we are unable to fund Golzar’s position at this time

Campaign managers are going to try to raise funds for Control Arms

o EJ Lead Organizer – we are not getting one this FY

Next steps –

o Everything is due to Judy by, Wednesday, August 11th

o All budgets are due Monday, August 30th We are in better shape than most

Questions –

1. Operationsa. There is not enough new money to expand some of our programsb. We are adding a signature program – National Security

i. We will be trying to engage Generals, etc around EJ, EI and Haitic. SoP will continue as it did last year

i. We are inviting a small group (5 women) to be part of “Sisters Circle” – this will start in October

1. We are trying to take these women to the fieldd. There is some Gates money out there

i. We may be able to expand SoP with some of this money

2. National Security – Jon Scanlon commentsa. Jon thinks that it is really smart to start working on National Securityb. AE has concerns with the upcoming elections (we could have a Republican

House) and that we might not be able to get legislation that AE wants without ties with Faith Leaders/communities and National Security

Overview of campaigns organizing budgets –

o EI – same budget as last year, but only OA money

o EJ – same budget as CC last year, but a little less OAAF money

o AE – exactly where Jon Scanlon budgeted for and OAAF money

o Haiti – this was done based on what Gina’s best guess was We will know more as Sophia starts full time on Monday, August 9th in the DC

office

o CA – we pulled this campaign out but are saving what we drafted for it We did budget some money for this campaign

o OAC and CHANGE Budgeted some money for the first time for these programs this year We are also bringing on a EJ CHANGE Intern from September - June

Strategic Alliances Advisor Update from Liz Carty –

o Interviewing 3 candidates One August 5th Looking to make an offer soon, hopefully for the candidate to start at the end of

August or the beginning of September
