Consumers
▪ Lower cost, superior experience, new products, driven by
economy of scale
Industry and enterprise
▪ Lower cost, wider bandwidths, lower latency, open APIs,
edge (i.e. distributed cloud) and IoT connectivity
Different industries have different requirements, so how
might service providers approach industry?
▪ Identify requirements and ambitions
▪ Create business cases for migrating to wireless
▪ Perform PoCs that demonstrate the model and benefits
Benefits of 5G and IoT connectivity

▪ Building management systems (BMS)
▪ Asset tracking
What are typical issues to address
for industry?
Three types of traffic are generated: broadband, massive machine type and URLLC communications types
8 April 2019 S3947-P-188 v0.2COMMERCIALLY CONFIDENTIAL 5
▪ Non-digital
▪ Private
– Own IT infrastructure, critical processes are digitised
– Up front investment, legacy technology, large organisation
▪ Cloud native
– Little or no infrastructure, most main non-critical processes
are located on a private, public or hybrid cloud
– Best/no effort connectivity, platforms, elasticity, agility
▪ Network native
– Carrier-grade, relies on platforms
– Quality of Service, lower cost, agility, longer vendor-client
interactions, updates
Digital transformation model
We are at the start of a fundamental transformation of the relationship between manufacturers and consumers

Objective
▪ Deliver maximum warehouse efficiency
▪ Control thousands of robots simultaneously, to within a fraction
of a second
Solution
▪ Bespoke wireless system - the most densely packed cellular
network in the world
▪ Capacity to handle up to 20x the number of current movements
Benefit
▪ Radically overhauled its warehousing system
▪ Robots can assemble a 50-item order in five minutes
▪ Powered Ocado’s growth, making platform available to its
partners globally
Ocado Smart Platform

▪ Novartis wanted a way of helping patients with
chronic obstructive pulmonary disease adhere to
their treatment regimes.
▪ It asked us to develop a connected version of its
Breezhaler inhaler to evaluate in clinical studies.
▪ We designed a novel sensing and communication
solution for the inhaler.
▪ The sensing algorithm recognises ‘inhalation sound
signatures’ to detect when the device is used. The
information is transmitted wirelessly to a local
device and, if a patient misses a dose, a reminder
can be sent.

Conclusion
New wireless platforms must prove their benefit to industries in a clear and simple manner
Wireless characteristics need to be translated into business value
Confidence in the business value is essential to attract the required investment to scale innovative connectivity
