An Opening Offer of 2009 Red and White Burgundy A warm vintage producing opulent, sensual and hedonistic wines of great appeal An Overview Red Wines 2009 is an excellent quality vintage possessing an opulent, ripe and succulent character, like 1989 in style but superior in quality. Palates are sweet and generous with caressing velvety tannins. Everything is delicious, both hierarchically, from top to bottom, and geographically, from north to south. They will be lovely to drink relatively young and in the mid term. White wines The white wines are ripe, extrovert and sensual. The best growers picked early and have made rich wines with sufficient supporting acidity and structure. They will be enjoyable young and in the medium term. Weather 2009 was a very easy year for the grower. It was much warmer than average and produced ripe but not over-ripe grapes. Indeed there were only two feasible problems. Firstly, the potential size of the crop, as the flowering was very successful and there was quite a lot of rain in July, followed by heat and sunshine, to swell the grapes. Secondly, over ripeness was a possibility as the grapes were healthy and the weather at harvest was sunny and stable so the growers could wait as long as they wished. The growers we deal with ensured yields were correct, by appropriate initial pruning and subsequent green pruning if necessary, and advanced the picking dates to maintain sufficient acidity in red and white grapes. With the experience of a number of early vintages and no longer any Ban deVendage (legal starting date) to contend with, growers now have the mental flexibility and freedom from bureaucracy to better determine the ideal time to pick. The grapes arrived at harvest in excellent health, with no botrytis. Little or no sorting was required. An Opening Offer of

2009 Red andWhite Burgundy

A warm vintage producing opulent, sensualand hedonistic wines of great appeal

An OverviewRed Wines2009 is an excellent quality vintage possessing an opulent, ripe and succulent character, like 1989 in stylebut superior in quality. Palates are sweet and generous with caressing velvety tannins. Everything is delicious, both hierarchically, from top to bottom, and geographically, from north to south. They will be lovely to drinkrelatively young and in the mid term.

White winesThe white wines are ripe, extrovert and sensual. The best growers picked early and have made rich wines withsufficient supporting acidity and structure. They will be enjoyable young and in the medium term.

Weather2009 was a very easy year for the grower. It was much warmer than average and produced ripe but notover-ripe grapes. Indeed there were only two feasible problems. Firstly, the potential size of the crop, as theflowering was very successful and there was quite a lot of rain in July, followed by heat and sunshine, to swellthe grapes. Secondly, over ripeness was a possibility as the grapes were healthy and the weather at harvest wassunny and stable so the growers could wait as long as they wished.

The growers we deal with ensured yields were correct, by appropriate initial pruning and subsequent greenpruning if necessary, and advanced the picking dates to maintain sufficient acidity in red and white grapes. With the experience of a number of early vintages and no longer any Ban de Vendage (legal starting date) tocontend with, growers now have the mental flexibility and freedom from bureaucracy to better determinethe ideal time to pick. The grapes arrived at harvest in excellent health, with no botrytis. The DetailWhat to buyIt is difficult to go wrong in 2009 as the warm year produced opulent, generous wines which are mostseductive. Below the headline generalisations, there are some variations in style. I suggest you read the noteson each grower which will give specific details to guide your choice.

Côte de Nuits and Côte de Beaune are equally successful. Though there are more successful wines atBourgogne level, and in many modest villages, than usual, it is, however, also true that the normal qualityhierarchy is respected and the wines reach greater levels of quality as one moves upwards from genericBourgognes, to villages, premiers crus and grands crus.

In a warm year such as 2009 the colder and wetter sites that struggle to reach maturity in a cool year benefitgreatly from the extra heat and develop an extra level of ripeness. This is particularly so for pinot noir whichneeds more heat than chardonnay to ripen. So 2009 is a very good year for Bourgogne rouges, especiallyGrivot’s Côte de Nuits Villages; St Aubins, both red and white, from Prudhon are delicious bargains;Aloxe-Corton; red and white Pernand-Vergelesses, including the very rich Jadot Croix de Pierre red; andSavigny-lès-Beaune.

Likewise the wines which are habitually firm and tannic, sweeten and soften in a year like 2009 and have thatsuperior structure to support the extra weight of fruit. In 2009 there are lovely Pommards from De Montilleand Clos des Epeneaux from Comte Armand, the latter we offer in magnums too as this will developbeautifully in bottle. Nuits-St-Georges is another such wine. Those who habitually find Burgundy too lightwill enjoy the Chauvenet Nuits-St-Georges which is a blockbuster. The Nuits of Chevillon and Domaine deBellene are lovely, ripe and balanced wines. Bonnes-Mares, often possessed of rather angular tannins, islikewise very successful.

In Gevrey, those who like powerful, hedonistic wines could do little better than to enjoy the opulent GevreyMes Favorites from Alain Burguet. Conversely, some of the most elegant and refined wines came from thecool Combe de Lavaux, the side valley just behind the main Côte. Here the richness of the vintage is temperedby the coolness of the vineyards and some beautifully balanced wines were made. These vineyards includeGoulots, Champeaux, Combe aux Moines, Estournelles St Jacques, Lavaux St Jacques and the wonderfulClos St Jacques, where we have three of the five wines made. These wines are offered by Bruno Clair,Drouhin-Laroze, Fourrier, Jadot, Maume and Mortet. For the same reason, the white Corton-Charlemagneis exceptionally good at grand cru level.

There are always some producers who make a particular success of a given harvest. Henri Boillot pickedvery early and has made super Pulignys. Jean-Noël Gagnard made lovely Chassagnes. Etienne Grivot’s slightlyaustere style is filled out beautifully this year and his wines are glorious, and, as mentioned earlier, his modestBourgogne and village Vosne are as successful as his top wines. Likewise Bruno Clair’s understated wines havealso benefited from the vintage characteristics. Fourrier’s wines have wonderfully defined fruit flavours anda lovely structure due to the very high levels of millerandage (50%). Roumier has made a conspicuous successof 2009. Denis Bachelet and Sylvain Cathiard are on great form.

In terms of value for money, Coche-Bizouard stand out for their excellent quality Meursaults, which arebeautifully rich and buttery in this vintage, and are offered at very reasonable prices. Prudhon’s St Aubins, both red and white, deserve another mention as they are outstanding bargains. Maume offer very good valuevillage Gevrey-Chambertin. Jadot’s Côte de Nuits Les Vaucrains is a star buy. Nicolas Potel makes modest winesparticularly well. His Bourgogne Rouge Clos Bardot, Domaine de Bellene and Côte de Nuits Villages, MaisonRoche de Bellene (négociant) are about as good as entry-level Burgundies get, offering the simple charms offragrant, light to medium-bodied, pinot noir.

If the choice is overwhelming, the five mixed cases make the decisions for you.

MACONNAIS

Château des Rontets, Pouilly-FuisséClaire and Fabio Gazeau-Montrasi aim for 45hl/ha, but storms and hail cut this to just 34hl/ha.The ripe year is tempered by Château des Rontets’ regal and cool situation, sited high above Fuissé,and the orientation of the vineyard which is to the north.

1. BU47201 Pouilly-Fuissé ClosVarambon £80 -Superb wine, made from a mature vineyard planted between 1950 and1960, fermented entirely in foudres this year. Rich yet with impressiveunderlying structure. 2012–2014.

2. BU47211 Pouilly-Fuissé Les Birbettes £115 -Les Birbettes was originally planted in the 1910s, with some replantingsince. Opulent, concentrated palate, honeyed yet finishes fresh. Barrelfermented. Excellent. 2012–2015.

Domaine Saint Denis, LugnyThis tiny 5ha domaine with vines in the communes of Lugny and Chardonnay allows Hubert Laferrèreto give incredible attention to detail to his vineyards, which, with the low yields, explains the highquality here.

3. BU47541 Mâcon-Chardonnay * - £98Very well-balanced vintage here. Ripe, 13.5%, but not excessively so,with a firm, clean palate. Unoaked. 2012–2013.

Domaine de la Soufrandise, Pouilly-FuisséNicolas Melin produces a well-balanced Pouilly-Fuissé, avoiding a caricature of the style. This winecombines a third fermented in barrel for weight and two thirds fermented in tank for freshness.

4. BU47271 Pouilly-FuisséVieillesVignes * - £140Lovely honeyed Pouilly-Fuissé which is ripe but not top heavy.2012–2014.

COTE D’OR

Comte Armand, Domaine des Epeneaux, Pommard Excellent wines here in 2009, perhaps resembling the superb 1999. Pommard’s burly structure is generouslycovered by the extra fat and opulence of the vintage. They started picking on the 12th September. This willdevelop beautifully so we offer it in magnums too.

5. BU47971 Pommard Premier Cru Clos des Epeneaux £298About 43hl/ha produced, which is a large crop here! Undoubtedly powerful, yet it wears its richness lightly, with lovely support of ripe tannins. This will age beautifully. 2016–2025. Magnums available.

Domaine Denis Bachelet, Gevrey-ChambertinGorgeous, plump and succulent wines here. Denis Bachelet is on flying form. He started the vintage on the 12th September. These wines can be enjoyed young or mature.

Domaine Ghislaine Barthod, Chambolle-MusignyTop quality wines here as usual. They were picked ripe but with an attractive freshness too.

9. BU47791 Chambolle-Musigny £170Lovely mid-weight, black-cherry fruit Chambolle. Pretty and understated. 2014–2018.

10. BU47801 Chambolle-Musigny Premier Cru Beaux Bruns £298Beaux Bruns makes one of the ripest and roundest Chambolles. Soft, sweet palate. 2014–2020.

12. BU47841 Chambolle-Musigny Premier Cru Cras £305Les Cras is a hillside cru with stony soil producing initially firm wines which blossom with age. This 2009 is less austere than usual. The palate is really fine and elegant, with lovely freshness for the vintage. 2016–2022.

Maison Roche de Bellene, BeauneNicolas Potel’s négociant company puts a lot of effort into making the modest wines well in his medium-bodied, lightly oaked style which gives pride of place to the delicate pinot fruit.

13. BU46891 Côte de Nuits Villages Vieilles Vignes * £38Lovely little wine, ripe and balanced, with the advantage of the richer texture of Côte de Nuits fruit offered at a very attractive price. 2012–2015.

Henri Boillot Ghislaine BarthodBenjamin Leroux of Comte Armand

Domaine Henri Boillot, Volnay Henri Boillot is on amazing form. He picked the whites early, beginning on the 3rd September and hasbeen rewarded with some of the best white wines of the vintage. His reds achieved a large crop for him, just 32hl/ha! If the whites are pure and refined, the reds are rich and powerful due to the low yields and are recommended to those who like richly flavoured Burgundy.

20. BU47111 Puligny-Montrachet £145Model Puligny: fresh, appley fruit with floral honeysuckle scent. 2012–2016.

Bouchard Père et Fils

Domaine Bonneau du Martray, Pernand-Vergelesses Corton-Charlemagne is a great success in 2009. Bonneau du Martray’s vines face west and receive more light than heat. Bonneau began picking on the 9th September and produced 39hl/ha.

25. BU46551 Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru £380Ripe, peachy fruit supported by a firm backbone. Fresh finish. Very good indeed. 2014–2022.

Bouchard Père et Fils, Beaune Founded in 1731, Joseph Bouchard began buying vineyards in 1775. Today Bouchard Père et Fils are the biggest vineyard owners in the Côte d’Or with 130ha. The investment and direction provided whenHenriot bought the company in 1995 has propelled it into the top division. The crowning achievement was the construction of a new state-of-the-art winery which was baptized with the 2005 vintage. These are excellent wines.

26. BU48161 Savigny-lès-Beaune Premier Cru Lavières £110Sweet and succulent Savigny. Will be gorgeous from the start. 2012–2016.

27. BU48171 Volnay Premier Cru Caillerets Ancien Cuvée Carnot £208Acquired by Bouchard in 1775, Caillerets always has a sensual texture to it and is the silkiest wine in a commune of silky wines. Fresh and intensely flavoured. 2013–2017.

Domaine Alain Burguet, Gevrey-Chambertin In a vintage of above average yields, Alain made just 35hl/ha (48hl/ha is the authorized maximum) becausehis green harvest was overly severe. This very low yield and his late-harvesting tendency, he began on the21st September and finished on the 27th, have produced stunningly rich and concentrated wines.

28. BU48221 Gevrey-Chambertin Mes Favorites Vieilles Vignes £198Mes Favorites is made from many tiny plots of vines averaging more than 50 years of age. Big, rich, dense wine of incredible natural concentration due to the low yields yet magically finishes fresh. This is outstanding. 2014–2020.

Domaine Camus-Bruchon, Savigny-lès-BeauneA lovely vintage here. Luc Camus began picking on the 7th September to preserve the sappy Savigny character of the wines. His domaine has very old vines which produce a consistent style and quality every year, as the deep roots guard against drought or flood.

29. BU47221 Savigny-lès-Beaune Pimientiers - £90Planted in 1935, this superb old-vine village Savigny is as good as it gets at this price and quality level. Fresh and lively for the vintage. 2012–2016.

30. BU47231 Savigny-lès-Beaune Aux Grands Liards Vieilles Vignes - £93From vines more than 80 years old. The deep roots supply the right amount of water, even in a warm year, producing well-balanced grapes. Sweet fruit but with Savigny’s sappy refreshing quality preserved. 2012–2016.

31. BU47241 Savigny-lès-Beaune Premier Cru Gravains - £99A step up in intensity of flavour, yet still with an appealing juicy fruit character, this is lovely premier cru Savigny. 2012–2017.

32. BU47251 Savigny-lès-Beaune Premier Cru Lavières - £110Fine, elegant, black-fruit pinot with impressive length of flavour. 2012–2017.

33. BU47261 Savigny-lès-Beaune Premier Cru Narbontons - £115A rounder, softer and broader style of Savigny, as one would expect of the Beaune side of the appellation. An excellent Narbontons. 2012–2017.

Domaine Sylvain Cathiard, Vosne-RomanéeSylvain has made superb wines again this year, starting the harvest on the 12th September. One marvels at how such exquisite perfume can be coaxed from mere grapes. He has put his prices up 25%. Demand is very strong for his wines and his quality is outstanding.

34. BU48021 Vosne-Romanée - £220Intense black-cherry fruit flavour and aromas combine to give pure pleasure. 2014–2020.

35. BU48041 Vosne-Romanée Premier Cru En Reignots - £465Lovely cherry-kernel aromas and flavours of sweet oak and kirsch combine seamlessly on the palate. 2015–2022.

36. BU48031 Vosne-Romanée Premier Cru En Orveaux £233 -Exquisite aromas backed by a palate of considerable weight and structure which needs a little longer to unfurl. 2015–2022. Three-bottle cases only.

37. BU48051 Vosne-Romanée Premier Cru Malconsorts - £700A step up from the other premiers crus, Malconsorts, which borders La Tâche, has even greater intensity and perfume and an even more sensual velvety texture. Heavenly. 2015–2024.

Domaine Jean Chauvenet, Nuits-St-GeorgesChristophe Drag no longer pumps his grapes into the vats but uses an angled conveyor belt and this has dramatically improved the quality of the tannins which could be a little firm in their youth. His 2009s arevery concentrated, almost black in colour with smooth and gentle tannins. They are incredibly rich tasting.Anyone who finds Burgundy a little too light will like these opulent wines. Yields were 42-47hl/ha.

42. BU47041 Nuits-St-Georges Premier Cru Roncières £188Less tannin-bound than Pruliers, this is already more expressive and fruity and can be enjoyed a little sooner. 2014–2019.

43. BU47031 Nuits-St-Georges Premier Cru Pruliers £188Backward and structured, typically Pruliers, this needs a little longer to soften up but will be splendid. 2015–2020.

44. BU47051 Nuits-St-Georges Premier Cru Cailles £220Seductive, creamy Nuits from very old vines with a finish that goes on and on. Superb. 2015–2022.

62. BU46661 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru £365The tannic structure of Bonnes-Mares is less apparent in 2009. The tannins are sweeter and well covered by the extra richness of the vintage, making this a very successful year for the grand cru. 2015–2025.

63. BU46671 Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Grand Cru £425Rich, yet fine. Intense floral aromas. Palate is dense and sumptuous. Glorious. 2015–2026.

Jean-Philippe Fichet, Meursault An excellent series of wines this year. They are ripe yet have lovely freshness too. He picked from the 9th tothe 14th September. Ploughing the vineyards promotes deeper rooting vines which produce better-balancedgrapes. In the cellar he is pressing the grapes more firmly and fermenting with higher turbidity must which produces wines with more grip and structure. He is also ageing the lesser wines up to Meursault in demi-muids (600-litre barrels), and transferring the top wines from 228-litre pièces into tanks after a year orso to preserve greater freshness.

64. BU48181 Bourgogne Blanc Vieilles Vignes £75Outstanding Bourgogne blanc, fine yet fresh with impressive finesse for a wine of this quality. 2012–2014.

65. BU48191 Meursault Meix sous le Château £151Ripe fruit supported by plenty of freshness and energy. Most appealing. 2012–2016.

66. BU48201 Meursault Chevalières £185The wine of the cellar this year, this has it all: power, richness, length of flavour and a lively freshness. 2012–2016.

Domaine Fourrier, Gevrey-Chambertin Jean-Marie Fourrier has made marvellous wines, with better balance than many. They are rich but have very impressive concentration and structure due to 50% millerandage (an imperfect fertilization that results inberries that remain very small, giving a high skin to pulp ratio). They also have a very attractive freshness andprecise fresh fruit, particularly the vineyards in the cool Combe de Lavaux, (ie. Goulots, Combes aux Moinesand Clos St Jacques) where the temperatures were a little lower than the main Côte. He has increased pricesbecause of high demand, particularly of Clos St Jacques. We think the quality justifies this move.

67. BU46861 Morey-St-Denis Clos Salon £143Ripe and pretty little Morey. Soft, rich and full flavoured. 2014–2018.

68. BU46831 Gevrey-Chambertin Vieille Vignes £160Plump and seductive with underlying grip. 2014–2020.

Domaine Jean Grivot, Vosne-RomanéeOne of the cellars of the vintage, Grivot’s elegant style has taken on an extra sweetness and softness due to the extra maturity of the fruit in 2009. Louis Jadot, BeauneWinemaker Jacques Lardière makes big and rich red Burgundies, fermenting them at high temperatures and vatting them for long periods. Le Vaucrain and the Pernand La Croix de Pierre are very impressive, richly flavoured wines at the modest end of the range. Regarding the whites, it is a very good year forPernand (and the red too) and for Corton-Charlemagne.

Domaine de Montille, Volnay A lovely series of wines here. Etienne de Montille began the vintage on the 7th September, harvesting mostwines at about 13%. Like Domaines Roche de Bellene (Nicolas Potel), Dujac and de la Romanée-Conti,Etienne is an advocate of whole-bunch fermentation when the stems are ripe. When properly practised thiscontributes beautiful floral, rose-petal aromas, an extra sweetness and roundness to the palate and a furtherindefinable complexity of character not found in completely destemmed wines. I have noted for interest ineach of the wines the proportion of whole bunches used.

104. BU48061 Beaune Premier Cru Sizies £139One third whole bunch. Round, sweet and extrovert Beaune. Charming and delicious. 2014–2018.

105. BU48071 Beaune Premier Cru Grèves £195Two thirds whole bunch. Sweet and fleshy top premier cru, full and approachable. 2014–2018.

107. BU48101 Pommard Premier Cru Pezérolles - £270Two thirds whole bunch. This is, as usual, very Volnay-like, medium bodied, light framed, with pretty silky texture and haunting perfume. Superb. 2015–2020.

112. BU48151 Vosne-Romanée Premier Cru Malconsorts Cuvée Christiane £400 -All whole bunch. A step up from the straight Malconsorts, the Christiane has an extra richness, energy and life. 2015–2022. Three-bottle cases only.

113. BU48131 Puligny-Montrachet Premier Cru Cailleret - £365Superbly sited vineyard forming the northern boundary of grand cruLe Montrachet, this is broad and opulent yet with good underlying grip. 2012–2015.

Domaine Denis Mortet, Gevrey-Chambertin Arnaud is maintaining his father’s policy of low yields and remarkable attention to detail in the vineyard, while picking a little earlier, using less new oak and extracting a little less during the vinification. He isdoing a little experimentation and he fermented his Combes du Dessus with 50% whole bunches giving an extra elegance and finesse. The 2009s are a great success, with most alcohols around 13% (starting theharvest on the 10th September), and a shift in balance with the wines exhibiting less out-and-out powerthan previously with more freshness and energy.

114. BU46571 Bourgogne Cuvée de Noble Souche - £90Rich, round and generous. 25% new oak. 2014–2018.

115. BU46581 Marsannay Longeroies - £135Soft and silky Marsannay with an extra depth of flavour from the warm vintage. 2014–2018.

119. BU46621 Gevrey-Chambertin Premier Cru Champeaux £385 -There is no access to this vineyard for machines and Arnaud has been ploughing the vineyard by horse since 2006, which has improved soil texture and promoted deeper rooting of the vines. Harvested at 13%, this is beautifully balanced. Rich but not heavy with good mid-palate weight and fresh finish. 2014–2022.

120. BU46631 Gevrey-Chambertin Premier Cru Lavaux St Jacques £405 -Like the Champeaux, this Lavaux benefits from the cooler temperatures of the Combe de Lavaux producing rich but balanced wines. The fruit is ripe but not overly so and is supported by fine tannins and sufficient acidity. Impressive. 2014–2022.

121. BU46561 Bourgogne Blanc £74 -Full but balanced chardonnay. The fermentation is started in tank and completed in barrel, where it spends a year. 2012–2014.

Domaine Henri Prudhon, St Aubin The delightful Prudhon family who prune tightly and offer lovely wines at very fair prices have beenrewarded with a super vintage in 2009. The cool side valley of St Aubin benefits from a little extra warmth. The whites are well balanced and the reds have an extra layer of fruit around the structural core lendingthem an appealing plumpness. These are bargains and warmly recommended.

122. BU47331 St Aubin Le Ban * - £95Fresh, appley St Aubin, barrel fermented and matured. A bargain. 2012–2014.

123 BU47371 St Aubin Premier Cru Perrières £70 -Pretty, floral wine, fine boned and elegant. 2012–2015.

124. BU47351 St Aubin Premier Cru Meurgers Dents de Chien £84 -Supremely elegant aroma and flavour with long finish. 2012–2015.

125. BU47381 Puligny-Montrachet Les Enseignères £128 -Exquisite honeysuckle-scented Puligny, with graceful and persistent palate. Very good indeed. 2013–2015.

126. BU47311 St Aubin Rouge Les Argilliers * - £69The extra flesh of the warm 2009 vintage makes for a beautiful little pinot, medium bodied, intense black-cherry perfume and soft palate. As good as St Aubin gets. 2012–2015.

127. BU47361 St Aubin Premier Cru Sentier du Clou Rouge £70 -Intense and vibrant with the extra ‘fat’ a warm vintage brings; this is a little star. 2012–2017.

Domaine Rollin, Pernand-VergelessesThe cool, rather enclosed village of Pernand-Vergelesses offset some of the heat of the vintage and madevery successful wines in 2009. We rarely buy red Pernand but the Fichots was outstandingly good this year.Remi Rollin harvested from the 7th to the 12th September.

128. BU46471 Pernand-Vergelesses - £77Lovely ripe wine, with some freshness to the fore. 2012–2014.

129. BU47531 Pernand-Vergelesses Premier Cru Les Fichots - £103Powerful and unusually firm wine for 2009 with the structure and freshness to mature beautifully in bottle. 2014–2020.

Domaine Georges Roumier, Chambolle-MusignyThis is a very successful vintage at Roumier. He made slightly lower yields than average with excellent maturity of tannins. The wines resemble the 1990 vintage; although 2009 was a little cooler and there is no over-ripeness in 2009 as there was in 1990. The predominant character is of ripe, but bright, wines with sweet tannins.

130. BU46681 Chambolle-Musigny - £175Pretty, perfumed wine with silky tannins that glide over the palate. Excellent village Chambolle. 2014–2018.

131. BU46691 Morey-St-Denis Premier Cru Clos de la Bussière - £215Deep colour, round and rich palate with lots of stuffing. Very good. 2014–2020.

132. BU46701 Chambolle-Musigny Premier Cru Cras - £388Intense and really quite richly textured and fruity palate for Cras, which is usually more austere and mineral in character. 2014–2022.

133. BU46711 Chambolle-Musigny Premier Cru Amoureuses £325 -Sensual and extrovert wine, great depth and length too. Outstanding. Please note we may need to restrict quantities further to ensure as many members as possible are able to try this wine. 2014–2025. Three-bottle cases only.

134. BU46721 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru £325 -Deep, powerful, profound wine. The sometimes angular tannins are rounded and sweet. Superb wine. 2018–2026. Three-bottle cases only.

Etienne Sauzet, Puligny-MontrachetAttractive wines here picked from the 7th September to preserve freshness. They are using higher pressure during pressing to extract a little more structure from the skins, and bottling with slightly wider corks(25mm, previously 24mm) to help maintain more vitality in the bottled wines.

135. BU46731 Chassagne-Montrachet Enseignères - £155Rich, round, full-flavoured white Burgundy. 2012–2014.

136. BU46741 Puligny-Montrachet * - £160Well-balanced assemblage from eight different vineyards averaging 30 years of age with 20% new oak. Soft yet fresh. 2012–2014.

138. BU46761 Puligny-Montrachet Premier Cru Referts * £238The combination of the richer soil in the Referts vineyard and an average age of about 50 years produces one of Puligny’s richest and fullest wines. 2012–2015.

139. BU46771 Puligny-Montrachet Premier Cru Champ Canet * £275Superbly situated, it borders Meursault Perrières, Champ Canet is an ideally balanced wine that is unjustly little known and hugely underrated. It is planted with excellent material which produces very small berries, from which Sauzet are making some cuttings to plant new vineyards. One of my favourite wines at Sauzet. White peach aromas, rich but dense palate with good grip. 2012–2017.

140. BU46781 Puligny-Montrachet Premier Cru Folatières * £295From parcels of vines high on the Côte, this is fresh and floral and is enlivened by a spark of brilliance. 2012–2017.

141. BU46791 Puligny-Montrachet Premier Cru Combettes * £375Combettes borders Meursault Charmes and is a marvellous synthesis of the appley elegance of Puligny and the buttery amplitude of Meursault. Good grip. 2012–2017.

Domaine Tollot-Beaut, Chorey-lès-BeauneAn attractive year here for these modest appellations which benefit from a little extra warmth. The vintagebegan on the 12th September.

142. BU47551 Chorey-lès-Beaune * £77Fresh and lively for the vintage. Lovely medium-bodied pinot. 2012–2016.

143. BU47561 Savigny-lès-Beaune Premier Cru Lavières £105Hedonistic wine with deep, soft, velvety embrace. 2012–2016.

144. BU47571 Aloxe-Corton £119A lovely year for the usually firm and austere Aloxe-Corton. In 2009 the ample fruit is sweet and closely framed by soft tannins. 2014–2018.

Domaine Jean-Marc and Anne-Marie Vincent, SantenayJean-Marc and Anne-Marie are dedicated and thoughtful vignerons, who keep yields low and prices fair. They ferment the Auxey in 300-litre barrels, instead of the normal 225-litre pièces, to moderate the oak and oxygen absorbed by the wine.

145. BU47071 Auxey-Duresses Les Hautés £85Round and generous Auxey supported by a grippy palate. Fermented and matured in 300-litre barrels. 2012–2014.

If demand exceeds supply The Society has a long relationship with many of the growers in this offer and access to good quantities ofwine. It is possible however that demand may exceed supply for individual wines, in which case we will shareout (as far as is practical) the available stock equally amongst ordering members. If this still does not allowevery member to have some wine, then as a final resort we divide members into groups depending on theirlevel of support for The Society (quantity of wine bought, spend, orders placed etc). Members who have givengreater support to The Society will have a better chance (but no certainty) of being allocated wine, and thosewho have given less support will have a lesser chance (but still a chance). The Society will offer a similar wineas a substitute if the original choice cannot be provided, or members may nominate their own substitutewhen ordering. Doing so will not lessen the chance of receiving the original wine.
