Open Caribbean Internet eXchange
Eldert J. Louisa, Chairman OCIXSt. Maarten, Netherlands Antilles
Key challenges for recruiting members for the OCIX
To convince the local key internet players the importance of the Internet Exchange Point (IXP), as being an incumbent telecom operator and that we don’t have any hidden agenda other than a commitment to reduce the “digital divide” gap between the Caribbean and the rest of the world
Continue to bring awareness and let them understand that St Maarten ecosystem is completely dependent of the internet and that this dependency can hurt the economy in case the international links providing internet are lost for whatever reason. Some people fail to realize that the Internet Exchange Points will bring this independency
Most of the local key internet players on St. Maarten still don’t understand the value added benefits of Internet Exchange and that we help us all connected on the IXP enhanced our routing more efficiency, becoming more fault-tolerance and the reduced latency
The importance of creating local content specifically tailored to the local market

OCIX Traffic (1)
In the beginning, it was a challenge to convince the local ISPs to become members of the OCIX. But in July 2010 we got one of the biggest ISP, CaribServe/UTS connected and since than we are exchanging the local traffic between TelEm Group and CaribServe/UTS.
OCIX Traffic (2)
On a regular basis the local Internet Service Providers ISPs exchange approximately 85 Mb worth of local internet traffic which is a cost saving of between 20k to 30k USD on a monthly basis for the ISPs. This make it possible for the ISPs to use their transit IP more efficiently
