How many men out there have incurred the wrath or the consequences of forgetting to do something for their lady for Valentine’s Day? Maybe you gave it a half hearted effort or your philosophy is that it’s a holiday created by the greeting card companies. That may be the case but I still ask, “How did that work out for you?” We may not have to buy chocolate or diamonds for our loved ones for Valentine’s Day but it can serve as a remind- er that we should regularly put forth some extra effort into our relationships from time to time. Some reflection questions might be: » When was the last time I told my spouse or significant other I love them? » When was the last time I went out of my way to cook a meal or clean the house without being asked? » When was the last time I had a meaningful conversation with my spouse or significant other about the depth of our relationship? For Elaine and I, when we were dating, my gift of choice was flowers and stuffed animals. We had so many stuffed animals that when we moved into our first house and before we had children, we had a room designated just for the stuffed animals! It wasn’t until we had been married for about 20 years that it dawned on me that I haven’t given Elaine flowers for a long time. I didn’t think much of it but I had them delivered to the house. Elaine called me almost in tears telling me how much she felt appreciated. Since the kids are older and fi- nances a little better, I have put flowers and spontaneous little gifts, back into my repertoire of things to show Elaine how much I appreciate her. Happy Valentine’s Day to all our parishioners and visi-tors here at Our Lady of Guadalupe. We tend to focus on the secular meaning of love and all the trappings that go with Valentine’s Day. How many men out there have incurred the wrath or the consequences of forgetting to do something for their lady for Valentine’s Day? Maybe you gave it a half hearted effort or your philosophy is that it’s a holiday created by the greeting card companies. That may be the case but I still ask, “How did that work out for you?” We may not have to buy chocolate or diamonds for our loved ones for Valentine’s Day but it can serve as a remind-er that we should regularly put forth some extra effort into our relationships from time to time. Some reflection questions might be: » When was the last time I told my spouse or significant

other I love them? » When was the last time I went out of my way to cook a

meal or clean the house without being asked? » When was the last time I had a meaningful conversation

with my spouse or significant other about the depth of our relationship?

For Elaine and I, when we were dating, my gift of choice was flowers and stuffed animals. We had so many stuffed animals that when we moved into our first house and before we had children, we had a room designated just for the stuffed animals! But after the kids came and the responsibili-ties, both emotional and financial, that come with that, I felt that Elaine knew how much I loved her, why spend the mon-ey. It wasn’t until we had been married for about 20 years that it dawned on me that I haven’t given Elaine flowers for a long time. I didn’t think much of it but I had them delivered to the house. Elaine called me almost in tears telling me how much she felt appreciated. Since the kids are older and fi-nances a little better, I have put flowers and spontaneous little gifts, back into my repertoire of things to show Elaine how much I appreciate her. I encourage everyone married or not to think back when was the last time you showed a loved one how much they are appreciated? And, what are you going to do this coming week to fol-low through? In Jesus’ Love,

The Liturgy of the Word

* 1st Reading: Isaiah 6:1-2A, 3-8 *

In the year King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord seated on a high and lofty throne, with the train of his garment filling the temple. Seraphim were stationed above.

They cried one to the other, "Holy, holy, holy is the LORD of hosts! All the earth is filled with his glory!" At the sound of that cry, the frame of the door shook and the house was filled with smoke.

Then I said, "Woe is me, I am doomed! For I am a man of unclean lips, living among a people of unclean lips; yet my eyes have seen the King, the LORD of hosts!" Then one of the seraphim flew to me, holding an ember that he had taken with tongs from the altar.

He touched my mouth with it, and said, "See, now that this has touched your lips, your wickedness is removed, your sin purged."

Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, "Whom shall I send? Who will go for us?" "Here I am," I said; "send me!"

The word of the Lord. THANKS BE TO GOD.

1. I will give thanks to you, O LORD, with all my heart, For you have heard the words of my mouth; In the presence of the angels I will sing your praise; I will worship at your holy temple And give thanks to your name. ♫

2. Because of your kindness and your truth; For you have made great above all things your name and your promise. When I called, you answered me; You built up strength within me. ♫

3. All the kings of the earth shall give thanks to you, O LORD, When they hear the words of you mouth; And they shall sing of the ways of the LORD; “Great is the glory of the LORD.” ♫

4. Your right hand saves me. The LORD will complete what he has done for me; Your kindness, O LORD, endures forever; Forsake not the work of your hands. ♫

* 2nd Reading: 1 Corinthians 15:1-11 *

I am reminding you, brothers and sisters, of the gospel I preached to you, which you indeed received and in which you also stand. Through

it you are also being saved, if you hold fast to the word I preached to you, unless you believed in vain. For I handed on to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures; that he was buried; that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures; that he appeared to Cephas, then to the Twelve. After that, Christ appeared to more than five hundred brothers at once, most of whom are still living, though some have fallen asleep. After that he appeared to James, then to all the apostles. Last of all, as to one born abnormally, he appeared to me. For I am the least of the apostles, not fit to be called an apostle, because I persecuted the church of God. But by the grace of God I am what I am, and his grace to me has not been ineffective. Indeed, I have toiled harder than all of them; not I, however, but the grace of God that is with me. Therefore, whether it be I or they, so we preach and so you believed.

The word of the Lord. THANKS BE TO GOD.

* Verse: * Come after me and I will make you fishers of men.

(Matthew 4:19)

* Gospel: Luke 5:1-11 *

While the crowd was pressing in on Jesus and listening to the word of God, he was standing by the Lake of Gennesaret. He saw two boats there alongside the lake; the fishermen had disembarked and were washing their nets. Getting into one of the boats, the one belonging to Simon, he asked him to put out a short distance from the shore. Then he sat down and taught the crowds from the boat. After he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, "Put out into deep water and lower your nets for a catch." Simon said in reply, "Master, we have worked hard all night and have caught nothing, but at your command I will lower the nets." When they had done this, they caught a great number of fish and their nets were tearing. They signaled to their partners in the other boat to come to help them. They came and filled both boats so that the boats were in danger of sinking. When Simon Peter saw this, he fell at the knees of Jesus and said, "Depart from me, Lord, for I am a sinful man." For astonishment at the catch of fish they had made seized him and all those with him, and likewise James and John, the sons of Zebedee, who were partners of Simon. Jesus said to Simon, "Do not be afraid; from now on you will be catching men." When they brought their boats to the shore, they left everything and followed him.

Verses: 1. You shall cross the barren desert, but you shall not die of thirst.

You shall wander far in safety though you do not know the way. You shall speak your words in foreign lands and all will understand. You shall see the face of God and live. (to Refrain)

2. If you pass through raging waters in the sea, you shall not drown. If you walk amid the burning flames, you shall not be harmed. If you stand before the pow’r of hell and death is at your side, know that I am with you through it all. (to Refrain)

3. Blessed are your poor, for the kingdom shall be theirs. Blest are you that weep and mourn for one day you shall laugh. And if wicked tongues insult and hate you all because of me, blessed, blessed are you. (to Refrain)

The 2019 Catholic Charities Annual Appeal is underway with an in-pew commitment process taking place the weekend of February 23rd & 24th. This is not a special collection;

rather, the Catholic Charities Annual Appeal represents the chance for all Catholics to make a significant pledge, payable in installments, to Catholic Charities, Diocese of Cleveland in order to support its mission of a society that stands united in its support of the “least among us.” Many parishioners have received a letter from Bishop Perez requesting their support. If you have not received this letter, please respond to the in-pew commitment process! If you have received the mailing, please respond to it. There is a box on the in-pew envelope to indicate that you have responded by mail. To give online visit www.catholiccommunity.org/donate or call Karen Joyce at 216-696-6525 X 1910 or [email protected]. Walk in Faith. Give in Joy. Your support of the 2019 Catholic Charities Annual Appeal helps us to all become missionary disciples. Please consider a generous gift that will change the lives of people like David, Marian, Shaye and Sharita. Hear their stories of transformation at www.catholiccommunity.org/videos. On behalf of the poor and needy of Northeast Ohio, thank you for your commitment to make a difference in the lives of those less fortunate.

Open the eyes of my heart, Lord!

February 10, 2017 This week’s readings teach us about the power of God’s grace and mercy. We learn it can release us from our guilt and allow us to overcome our weaknesses. All three men, Isaiah, Saint Paul and Saint Peter were touched in different ways but all were transformed. Each man dedicated his life to do God’s will. Throughout history, Satan has done a good job convincing us that we are not good enough to do God’s work or that we are not worthy of His love. In the readings, each man felt unworthy when in the presence of God. However, through grace, they did not allow their past to determine the people they would become. God’s mercy overshadowed their fear and they were able to answer God’s call to be holy men. The grace of God and His unfathomable mercy can wash away our deepest doubts and fears, freeing us to answer His call to holiness. We are made in the image and likeness of God. Through our baptism and confirmation, we have received the graces necessary to become saints. Let us turn to God the Father and allow His love to empower us to become the best possible person we can be.

REFLECTION QUESTIONS:

Q1. What stops me or holds me back from taking a

more active role in my faith? Q2. Take time this week to pray in private or in front of

the Blessed Sacrament to ask the Lord where He I s calling you to serve.

Q3. Who are some people that are active in their faith?

Check to see if they are also joyful and peaceful people.

~written by Spiritual Life Committee

Please pray for the family of Florian Buszta (father of Joanne Piekarczyk) who recently passed from this life. Eternal rest grant to him, O Lord. And let perpetual light shine upon him. May his soul, and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of

God rest in peace. Amen.

From Sinners to Apostles

Saint John Paul II wrote the following words to all women who have had abor-tions: “The Father of mercies is ready to give you his forgiveness and his peace in the Sacrament of Reconciliation. To the same Father and to his mercy you can with sure hope entrust your child. With

the friendly and expert help and advice of other people, and as a result of your own painful experience, you can be among the most eloquent defenders of everyone's right to life. Through your com-mitment to life, whether by accepting the birth of other children or by welcoming and caring for those most in need of someone to be close to them, you will become promoters of a new way of looking at human life.” (The Gospel of Life, n.99)

A BIG THANK YOU to all who supported our Souper Bowl Cook Off. Those who attended, those who bought raffle tickets or donated baskets, and especially to those on my committee who devoted so much time to making this event a success. And to all the fabulous cooks who made their favorite soup and chili. Joel and Sandy Austhof, Loreen Link, Cheryl Leben Ferraro, Randy Miller, Carol Doyle, Joe Triggiani, Nancy Hatala, Marie Bremenour, Pearl Metzger.

Because of all their time and efforts we were able to donate $1027.88 to Catholic Heart Workcamp to send our teens to other cities to help the less fortunate.

P.S.R. News There will be NO PSR on Sunday, February 17th and Monday, February 18th due to the President’s Day holiday. We will have a blessing for all the students who are preparing to receive their First Communion in May. The blessing will be on Sunday, February 24 at the 10:30 am Mass. C.L.O.W. Family Connection In the people whom Jesus chose to be his closest friends—his disciples—we see many of the characteristic shortcomings of ordinary human beings. We also see the ways that God uses the gifts he gave us to transform us into new people, the mediators through whom God will lead others to Jesus and to his kingdom. Let's consider the person Jesus chose to be a leader among the disciples and whom he sent to “catch people.” Based on the evidence found in Scripture, we can imagine what Peter must have been like: » Peter seems unafraid to speak his mind, yet he is also able to take

direction. In today's Gospel, Simon Peter lowers his nets as Jesus commands, but not before reminding Jesus that he and his partners have been fishing all night and haven't caught anything.

» Peter is a leader, a spokesperson for others. Today's Gospel suggests that Simon Peter was a leader in his fishing business. When Simon Peter chooses to follow Jesus, others become Jesus' disciple as well.

» Peter's personality and charisma seem to make him the center of attention; yet Peter learned to be transparent, to let others see Jesus through him.

» Peter possesses a dynamic and open relationship with Jesus. Peter often approaches Jesus and speaks what is in his heart. Gather as a family and spend some time imagining the person of Simon Peter. Is Peter someone you would like to be friends with? Why or why not? Do you consider Peter a good leader? Why or why not? Read aloud today's Gospel, Luke 5:1-11. Jesus chose Simon Peter to be the leader of the disciples. Peter continued to be a leader in the early Christian community; we continue to speak of Peter's leadership when we call the pope the successor of Peter. Discuss the role of the papacy and of other leaders in the Church. In what ways do we participate in the mission of the Church by leading people to Christ (“catching people”)? Pray for those who lead the Church.

Music Ministry News The Magnificat Choir is beginning to prepare music for Lent, Holy Week and the Sacred Triduum. Our parish is fortunate to have a dedicated group of people who like to sing at Mass, how-ever, extra voices are needed and we would love to have yours! All voices welcome! Our Cantor ministry is looking for additional voices to help lead our congregational singing at the 4:30 PM Vigil and 8:30 AM weekend Masses. The Regina Caeli Choir (Funeral Masses) is a comforting minis-try for our parish families. Just like the Magnificat Choir, we are fortunate to have a dedicated group of people who volunteer for this rewarding ministry. New voices are always welcome! If you are looking for something different, maybe the Guadalupe Ringers are for you. Most of our ringers started with no prior knowledge of music but discovered and found it easy to learn to ring a handbell. The Youth Choir has started up again (3rd to 8th graders.) Our next two rehearsals are on Tuesday: February 12 @ 6:00 PM and Tuesday: February 17 @ 6:00 PM. The Youth Choir will sing with the Magnificat Choir on Sunday: February 24 @ the 10:30 AM Mass.
