John R.Elliottgraduatedin May 2000from the United

States Naval Academy with a B.S. in SystemsEngineering, and received his commission asan Ensign in the United States Navy He waspreparing to attend Naval Flight Officer Schoolin Pensacola, FL when he was killed in ahead-on collision with a drunken driver.

John grew up in Egg Harbor Township, NJHe was a National Merit Scholar, Presidentof his class, and a member of the footballand tennis teams at Egg Harbor TownshipHigh School. At the Naval Academy he wasa Squad leader and Platoon commander,and a member of the 5th Battalion andRegimental championship racquetball team.

John was recognized for his achievementsin academics, leadership and athletics, andwas a true officer and a gentleman. At theAcademy, John distinguished himself as aHuman Education Resource Officer (HERO)and was selected the outstanding HERO inhis class. In his honor and in an effort to enddrunken driving fatalities and accidents, theEnsign John R. Elliott HERO Campaign forDesignated Drivers" has been established.
