Elias tugged thoughtfully at hisbeard and frowned at his son. Idont want you going off to seeJesus again. Hes a trouble-maker.

Jeremias fidgeted. He didntreally understand why his fatherwas so set against the rabbi Jesus. All the stories going around theircommunity told of this teacherperforming acts of great kindness. He healed the sick. He providedfood for those who had followedHim into the Judean hills to listenthrough the day and into theevening hours. What could beintolerable in a rabbi such as this? The thoughts remained unspoken.Jeremiass head was bowedsubserviently.

Now go back to your studiesand remember, do not meddlewith those who disrespect ourtraditions!

Elias was profoundly irritatedat what he heard of Jesusteachings. He left the house, walking fast to the far corner ofthe village where several otherelders were gathered, awaitinghis arrival.

The Heart of the LawO Esp rito da Lei

Elias afagava pensativamente suabarba. Ele franziu as sobrancelhaspara o filho. No quero que voc saiapara ver a Jesus, disse sobriamente.Ele um encrenqueiro.

Jeremias se remexeu. Noentendia porque seu pai estava to

Jeremias curvou a cabea emsubmisso.

We are glad you came, Elias. It is time to confront this preacher. He has been seen profaning theSabbath!

    ***

The midday sun shone brightly, and the ripening stalks of cornswayed in the gentle breeze, giving an appearance of a field ofgold. The sky was a beautiful blue, not a cloud in sight. At one cornerof the field, a group of young menwere gathered under the shade ofa tree, munching hungrily on earsof grain as they talked. Theystopped talking as the black-robedPharisees approached. Politegreetings were interrupted byElias.

Take a look at this! heexclaimed. Theyre eating grain!Grain picked on the Sabbath!

    ***

    O sol do meio-dia brilhava forte, e

Vejam s, exclamou ele. Elesesto comendo gro! Grocolhido no Sbado!

Elias turned angrily to Jesus.Dont you know its against the lawgiven to us by Moses? Why are theybreaking the Sabbath bypicking grain?

    The men standing before Jesus

valued the letter of the law, not itsheart. He replied with characteristiccalmness, The Sabbath was madefor man, and not man for theSabbath.

Elias scowled at him and turnedback to the other elders. They

walked a few paces away, huddlingtogether as they murmuredamongst themselves, Who doesthis man think he is? Defiling theSabbath! Not willing to subjectthemselves to further blasphemy, they walked back to the village

synagogue, discussing as they wenttheir outrage that Jesus did notaccept the supremacy of the Law.

Back in the synagogue, thecongregation was gathering forprayer. Elias cast his eye over thecrowd. Yes, there was his son.

God be praised, Elias thought tohimself.

The small band from the grainfield had also walked back to townand now entered the synagogue.Elias nudged one of the otherelders. Look, hes here! Wed better

keep close and listen to every wordhe says! Elias was greatly agitated.

Deus

seja louvado pensou Elias consigo.O pequeno grupo do campo de

gro, tambm tinha voltado para acidade e estava agora entrando nasinagoga. Elias cutucou um dosoutros ancies. Olhe, ele est aqui! melhor ficarmos por perto e

escutarmos cada palavra que diz!Elias estava muito agitado.

It was Amoz that drew Jesusattention. Amoz was a gauntman in his forties. He came froma family of farmers, but hadstruggled all his life due to hishandicap. His right hand was

withered and useless. There wasno feeling in the fingers, nopower of movement in his wrist,no strength whatsoever. His armhung lifelessly at his side. This wasno small problem. His left arm wasunusually strong as it was used to

doing the work of two; but still, the handicap hindered his laborson the land and Amoz and hisfamily were desperately poor.

Amoz turned as a stranger, whoappeared by his bearing to be ateacher, moved in his direction.

    Stand over here, he asked.

Tinha a mo direita mirrada e intil.

It was a gentle but commandingvoice. Amoz came over to Jesus. Hehad never seen him before anddidnt know why he had beencalled out, but there was a strange

feeling rising in his heart. Someindefinable expectation, somehope was leaping up inside.

Jesus was well aware thateverything He said and did wasbeing scrutinized by the smallgroup of Pharisees who were now

pushing their way through thecongregation. They wanted to hearand see everything that went on.Elias stood with the other elders. He glared at Jesus, ready to seewhat would follow.

Jeremias also edged his waycloser. He had wanted to hear Jesusspeak again, like he had on thehillside some months previously. He wanted to understand what wasdifferent about Jesus teaching, and

why his father opposed him sovehemently.

Jesus spoke again, this timedirectly to the Pharisees. Is itlawful to do good on the Sabbathdays, or to do evil? To save life, orto kill? There was an anger in His

voice. He could see that theirhearts were hard. They cared moreabout the days of the week thanthey did for those in need.

Elias was silent. The otherelders also held their peace, watching to see what would follow.

Jeremias held his breath.Jesus turned back to Amoz.

Stretch out yourhand.Amoz could not do this; his hand

was hanging limply. But thatmysterious kindling of hope in hisheart caused him to want to obey

the teacher and he made theeffort.

As he did so, there came atingling in his right arm that he hadnot felt since he could remember. His hand stretched out firmlyhemoved his fingershis hand was

    healed! It was a miracle!

Jeremias tambm conseguiu seaproximar.

Jeremias prendeu a

respirao. Dava para sentir atenso reinante.

Jesus virou-se de novo paraAms. Estende a mo.

corao o fez querer obedecer aomestre e fazer o esforo.

    curada! Era um milagre!

He raised his right handthehand that had been witheredawayto his face in wonder. He putboth hands together. They were ofequal strength! He moved eachfinger in turn; he twisted his handpalm up, palm down. He flexed hishand. He made a fist, then stretchedthe fingers. Again he clenched, againhe stretched. He stared at his hands, and then he looked at Jesus. Wordscould not express his thanks. Jesussmiled, and stepped back, as thecrowd was now pressing forward tosee Amoz closer.

Jeremias peered over the headsof the throng to get a better view.Exclamations of astonishmentcould be heard throughout thecongregation. His father had

stormed out in a silent rage. TheSabbath had been defiled, again!

Ele levantou a mo direita, a moque era mirrada, altura do rosto, maravilhado. Juntou ambas as mos.Tinham a mesma fora! Movimentou a

mo. Fechou-a e depois esticou osdedos. Fechou e abriu a mo maisuma vez. Palavras no podiam expressar comoestava agradecido.

O pai tinha sadoapressadamente numa raiva

silenciosa. O Sbado tinha sidodesrespeitado de novo!

Jesus and His followers hadwithdrawn from the synagogue.Jeremias also made his wayoutside. One of the followers ofJesus was standing quietly by thewell, drinking water. This was a

youth of about his ageyoungerthan the others. Jeremiasapproached him.

Are you one of Hisfollowers?Yes, that is myprivilege!I dont understand the conflict.

Your rabbi seems to do good, but

the elders are angry with him. Whydoesnt He respect the Law?Couldnt He have waited untiltomorrow to heal old Amoz?

The young man looked closely athis questioner. But why should hesuffer a day longer than needed? If

you were in his place, wouldnt youwant to be healed as soon aspossible?

I have heard Jesus speakbefore, and I hear the stories thatpeople tell, but what does Hismessage really mean? Jeremias

burst out, giving voice to theanxiety and confusion that filled hismind. I saw His anger today, at myfather among others, yet I also sawHis compassion. Why does He defythe elders? His performance todayaggravated them, but on the other

hand, I cant help but see that He isworking miracles. And I cannot

Jesus e Seus seguidores tinhamsado da sinagoga. Jeremias tambmsaiu.

Eu no entendo o conflito.

E no

Jeremias, grace, mercy, love this is the heart of the law, not the

dutiful keeping of every fine detailof the commandments. Isnthealing Amoz more important thankeeping the jot and tittle ofSabbath day law?

    ***

It was late in the evening, andJeremias was breathless when hemade it back to the door of hishome. He had hurried over severalmiles of countryside. He didntwant his father to know where hehad been.

Elias jumped up when his sonentered the room. He stared hardat him, as though the scrutinywould reveal his sonsrecent whereabouts.

Well, what do you have to sayfor yourself? he demanded

    angrily.Jeremias adopted the meek

pose of a dutiful son. But it was anoutward show. On the inside, he nolonger feared the wrath of hisfather. No, he would leaveeverything behind and follow the
