IOANNIS P. THEOCHARIDES

Born in 1947, Professor Ioanni s 'Theocharides graduated from the University of Sofia with an MA degree in history with specialization in Balkan and Ot- toman Studies. In 1971 he defended his doctoral dissertation on the agrarian regime in Cyprus during Ottoman rule. He started his academic carrier as a Visiting Scholar in the Department of the Histoly of the Balkan Peoples, School of History, University of Sofia (1978-8 1) and in the former Chair of Modem History, School of Philosophy , University of Ioannina, Greece ( 1982). He was appointed as a Lecturer for Ottoman History at the University of Ioannina (1983- 1987), then as an Assistant Professor at the same university (1987-1991). In the following years, 1991-1997, he sewed as Director of the Research Centre of Kykkos Monastery in Cyprus. In 1997 he was appointed as an Associate Professor in the Department of Turkish Studies, University of Cyprus, until 2008, when he was promoted to full Professor, a position in which he serves until today. loannis Theocharides participated in several in- ternational congresses, symposia and seminars. He also organised several local and international congresses, symposia, meetings and lectures in the Research Centre of the Kykkos Monastery, the Cyprus Historical Society and the Department of Turkish Studies at the University of Cyprus.

Ioannis Theocharides ' research concentrates on the study of Cypriot and, more generally, Greek history during the Ottoman period, with special emphasis on the administrztive, economic and social institutions of the Otto- man Empire. Besides this, his research also deals with topics from Ottoman palaeograph y and di plomatics . His research endeavours are associated with the search for, analysis and publication of the unpublished Ottoman archival material, which is most important historical source for the period under study. This material makes up the backbone of all his scholarly work, as also be- comes clear from the list of his publications.
