AUCKLAND – Mainland survived a late charge from the four-time runners-up in the closing stages of the final with Capital scoring twice in the last 15 seconds to give Ronan Naicker’s team a scare, but the leaders from Series One and Two held firm to earn their first national title.

Naicker said the group were delighted to lead the competition from the outset, finishing top of the standings after each of the three series’.

made a hot start for Capital, Naicker said the team turned things around late in the first half to build the buffer they eventually needed to claim the title.

“Capital started really, really well and caught us on the back foot and they were dictating play and doing what we wanted to do.”

“We got the boys in 10 minutes into the first half, calmed them down and as it played it out, we got back into it by halftime. Then after that we pretty much controlled the game for huge parts.

“At the end they were playing fifth man but we felt we had the game won. It was an exciting finish and I’m sure everyone enjoyed it.”

Earlier in the day, Mainland secured their final berth after seeing off the challenge of fourth-placed Futsal South with a 6-4 win in the first semi-final while Capital advanced after coming from 3-1 down late in their clash with defending champions Auckland to record a 4-3 win.

Mainland’s Ezequiel Junior finished as the league Golden Boot while Northern’s Hicham Kamri was named overall Most Valuable Player. Auckland’s Elias Billeh picked up the Golden Gloves.

Mainland Futsal won the 2014 Futsal National League after a dramatic 7-6 final win over Capital Futsal at the ASB Stadium in Kohimarama in December.

“It’s a great feeling really, Naicker said, “it’s a huge relief in many aspects because we started really well and we maintained it right through and it’s good that we could finish the job.

“Like I said to all the players, they answered every question that was asked of them and it’s been a long time coming for Mainland.”

Northern return in 2015 with a number of key players missing from recent campaigns, but with wily coach Felipe Bernardi once again at the helm, they will surely find a way to keep themselves ‘in the mix’ as the playoffs loom in December.

The departures of Bakr Al-Saudi, Shady Osman, Hicham Kamri and Jan Fischer will be keenly felt by Northern, with all four forming part of the championship winning side of 2013.

Only former Futsal White Ouadhah Ragued, goalkeeper Arman Dashtabi, flanker Nikola Velkovski and a crop of youngsters who have worked with Bernardi for a number of seasons will appear in Napier for Series One. This includes Morgan Borrett, Charles Robertson and Eden Caudwell, who all starred for Northern in the U19s at the National Youth Championships in July, while the average age of the rest of the squad is just twenty years old.

Despite any perceived shortcomings outsiders might see in the Northern squad, the experience and tactical nous of Brazilian Bernardi is always apparent, meaning Northern’s will retain their ability to upset any side in the league on their day.

After bowing out in the semi-final last year, Auckland return in 2015 fully focussed on their aim - a third national league title in six seasons.

Coach Nathan Robertson appears to have hung up his futsal shoes after a long, successful career, but with seven other current or former Futsal Whites at his disposal, he has more depth in his squad than any other coach in the national league this season.

Once again, champion goal scorer Dylan Manickum, playmaker Marvin Eakins and vastly experienced goalkeeper Elias Billeh are the key figures in Auckland’s campaign, along with fellow Futsal Whites Ernesto Lopez , Kareem Osman, Stephen Ashby and Bakr Al-Saudi.

Lopez emerged last year as a devastating finisher with the confidence and abillty to take players on from anywere on the court, while former capital skipper Osman is a major acquisition, particularly in light of his excellent international form over the winter.

Sam Twigg and Victor Ganescu (transferred from Mainland) will lead a crop of promising youngsters who will most definitely challenge their more experienced team mates for court time.

In finishing sixth, the youthful WaiBOP enjoyed their best ever season in the national league in 2014.

They return with a handful of last year’s squad, but as with a number of teams, there are some key players from previous seasons missing in Series One.

Futsal White Brayden Lissington is one of a number of Futsal Whites preparing for the OFC Futsal Championship World Cup qualifier by playing club futsal in Australia. The former Hawke’s Bay playmaker will be sorely missed, along with key members of recent WaiBOP senior and youth squads, Kyle Wisnewski, Ben Wallace, Shaun Morgan and John Penyas. Coach Wayne Bates will certainly be keen to get as many of these outstanding youngsters as possible back on the floorboards for the Wellington and Auckland series’.

36 year old pivot Leo Pardini enjoyed an outstanding 2014 and is only the player in the squad born before 1990. Dominic O’Sullivan, Shaun Kipara Jonathan Tobias and Sam Masterson are welcome returnees for Bates, with all having served WaiBOP well in recent seasons. Meanwhile, Ehsan Aslani emerged last year as a genuine attacking threat with the ability to snatch goals at vital times.

After making the playoffs for the first time in 2013, Central - Hawke’s Bay endured a disappointing follow-up season in 2014.

They return in 2015 with a new coach - former Hawke’s Bay United football player and coach Chris Greatholder - and an interesting and experienced lineup that is sure to give them a good shot at playoff action once again.

Powerhouse pivot Josh Stevenson and dynamic youngster Harrison Gregory return to lead the Hawke’s Bay attack, while one-time Futsal White pivot Daniel Ball returns after some indifferent form in the previous campaign.

Goalkeeper Mitchell Webber and flanker Dylan Cozens may still be under twenty years old, but return for their fifth season of national league, while Brigham Fraser makes the step up from the U19 squad. Fraser is one of the most exciting flankers on the national scene and will add some much needed flair to the Hawke’s Bay attack.

The inclusion of former Wellington Phoenix and New Zealand age group football international Tom Biss could be a major coup for Greatholder. If Biss can emulate the successful conversion to futsal made by team mate Reiner Bauerfiend, he will surely be a major asset to Hawke’s Bay on their home court this weekend.

After a dreadful 2014 that saw Manawatu concede a record 100 goals in 14 games, the ‘only way is up’ for the men in greeen this season.

Futsal Whites Josh Margetts and Jono Steele enjoyed excellent starts to their international careers during winter’s Trans Tasman and Commonwealth Cups, but both are missing for Series One.

However, former YoungHeart Manawatu legends Nathan Cooksley and Adam Cowan return this year, with both having made significant contributions to Central - Manawatu in previous seasons. Last season’s coach Scott Mudgway, dusts off his futsal shoes after skipping the 2014 season, as does Dalin Wilson. Fixo Wilson was a stalwart for Red Sox in the early days of the Futsal National League.

Speedy flankers Tyson Brandt and Nathan Reddy can usually be relied on for goals, while Vanuatu international Seule Soromon will add some electric pace and flair in the final third. The versatile and dangerous Soromon has the rare distinction of representing his country in football, futsal and beach soccer, and most recently featured for Vanuatu in the Commonwealth Cup in Wellington earlier this year.

Perennial runners-up Capital return with high hopes that 2015 will finally be the year they capture the elusive silverware, after four heartbreaking final losses in five seasons.

The Wellingtonians are stacked full of talent, with current Futsal Whites Lucas Da Silva, Miroslav (Micky) Malivuk and Luc Saker shaping as the key figures once again.

Silva’s ability to dictate the tempo is a rare asset in New Zealand futsal, while Malivuk’s goalscoring record speaks for itself. Despite a goal drought for the Futsal Whites in recent seasons, the Capital target man is the leading marksman in National League history with 56 strikes, and he capped an outstanding 2014 with a five goal haul in the final loss against Mainland.

Meanwhile, Saker’s sensational performances in the Trans Tasman and Commonwealth Cups this winter have catapulted the seventeen year old into the frame for the Futsal Whites squad that will contest the OFC Futsal Championship in 2016.

Flying flankers Shingo Ina, Tai Barham and Matt Edridge will once again provide additional attacking impetus for coach Said Soleimanpour, while fixo Enrico Meirelles and goalkeeper Jacques Cucurullo are two of the most consistent performers in the league.

Champions Mainland will have a difficult task emulating their stellar 2014 achievements, following the loss of several key players for this campaign.

Luis Ebrahim, Evandro Madruga and Andre Pestana are all missing, as is the mercurial Ezequiel Junior, who scored a sensational 22 goals in 11 games last year on his way to the Golden Boot.

The Futsal White pairing of Daniel Burns (playing in Australia) and Ryan Batty are also unavailable, meaning coach Ronan Naicker will need to look elsewhere in his pack to come up with the aces he needs to compete for honours in the most competitive National League ever.

Goalkeeper Atta Elayyan remains one of the best in the business, while the experienced trio of flankers, Rami Dawwas, Kaiea Karennang and Shannen Vailuu have always given Mainland good service. Each will relish the opportunity of more court time and responsibility following the team’s 2015 revamp.

Exciting youngsters Sam and Ben Lapslie are well known from their exploits in the National Youth Championships, as are Matthew Bergin and Tom McGowan.

Meanwhile while the nomadic Futsal White Jakub Sinkora, makes a welcome comeback to the ‘red blacks’ after a season with Capital.

South return this year after a solid 2014 season, which saw them make the playoffs for the second time before going down 6-4 in the local derby semi-final with Mainland.

Darren Hart returns to drive South’s campaign in the player/coach role, with a core of players who have served South well over recent seasons. There are some notable omissions however, with the talismanic Brazilian pivot Carlos Herrmann top of that list. Hermann, a former MVP who has at times been regarded as the finest player in the league, is absent in Series One, along with deadly attackers Peter Rae and Daniel de Souza.

Consistent performers Tom Morley, Sean McIntee and Reid Hullueman will all feature again for South, while the goals of former Futsal White Michael Sannum will be near the top of the ‘wishlist’ for Hart in his second stint in charge.

Sannum enjoyed a vintage year in front of goal in 2014, and struck up an excellent partnership with young flanker Benjamin Wallace, who also weighed in with his fair share of strikes.

Rahan Ali, who played in the first ever national league at the age of fourteen, is another welcome returnee to South’s ranks after an outstanding performance in the the National Youth Championships in July.
