PRESIDENTS REPORT

Hi everyone, Kris has touched on our trip to Stewart Island where we jammed a lot into a great trip. Vehicles performed exceptionally well with the only fatality being one trailer tyre on the boat and a mud guard somewhere between Springs Junction and Blenheim. If you are travelling that road can you keep your eyes open We ended up going down the Kaikoura coast which was absolutely amazing and on the way back had to take the inland road through Hamner to Picton.

Once we have compiled photographs we shall put a story together for the newsletter. Seven grown adults being chased into the hut by a seal had to be a highlight all captured on video. By the way Kris was first into the hut lol. AGM is this Thursday and the committee has a few vacant positions to fill, our club is in a very good position at the moment and many hands make light work, a more extensive report on the years activities will follow in the next newsletter. Roar is coming up across the various species; be accurate and safe out there. Lee Garrick [email protected]

Condolences Our deepest sympathies to our clubs Patron Curly Elmiger for the recent loss of his lovely partner and wife of 74 years.

There is no night without a dawning

No winter without a spring

And beyond the dark horizon

Our hearts will once more sing…

For those who leave us for a while

Have only gone away

To wait for us to join them

When our paths cross again

Editors Report Hi everyone,

Well our long awaited trip now seems like a distant memory, but a

wonderful 10 days at Kellys in Port Adventure was had by all. It

was cold and a few days of rain but always a pleasure regardless of

the weather. Lots of blue cod & enough venison to feed the crew

and some close encounters with sharks, seals and kiwi. Started

planning the next trip during the long haul home . The roar is

now on the horizon and looking forward to a trip in late April then

we are full on with the HUNTS course for 2 months.

Hope you are all enjoying the cooler weather and busy planning

your own roar hunt.

Be safe and enjoy..

Cheers

Kris

AGM will be held on Thursday 15th March 2018.

6.30am Presidents Shout 7.00pm Start – Prize Giving

Followed by AGM Your club needs Hunts Convenors to organise club hunts and a Publicity Officer who will also be responsible for maintaining the Facebook page. There are also a number of other responsibilities that current committee members are shouldering due to the lack of interest from members to help out. So come along vote and consider putting your name forward to lighten the load for all.

Club Night:

Thursday 1st March a club night was held at the club rooms on the range. A wonderful

turn out of 50 plus individuals to listen to Barry Shepherd, the Police SAR coordinator and

Nat Every, the base manager and pilot for the Greenlea Rescue Helicopter in Taupo, talk

about Safety in the back country. Geoff Stent from Hunting & Fishing & Jordan Cordtz

from Hutchwilco were also there to run through safety equipment such as GPS and PLB

devices that are available. A big thank you to these individuals for volunteering their time

and sharing their knowledge. It was a very enjoyable and informative evening.

Homemade Venison Jerky Recipe

You'll never buy store-bought jerky again after trying this venison jerky recipe

Making your own venison jerky is a great way to make the most of your deer harvest.

By: Raschell Rule

Yields: 4 pounds venison jerky Prep time: 15 minutes Cook time: 6 hours

Ingredients:

4 pounds venison

2 teaspoons freshly ground black pepper

2 teaspoons homemade chili powder

2 teaspoons homemade garlic powder

2 teaspoons homemade onion powder

1 teaspoon Hungarian hot paprika, more if you want it hot

1 teaspoon liquid smoke

¼ cup homemade brown sugar (packed)

¼ cup homemade soy sauce

¼ cup homemade teriyaki sauce

½ cup homemade Worcestershire sauce

3 tablespoons homemade hot sauce (or to taste)

Directions:

Trim fat from the meat (if there is any) and slice into 4-inch strips. The meat pieces should be between 1/4-

and 1/2-inch thick. It is easier to slice this meat if it is partially frozen. Pound meat lightly and set aside.

Combine the rest of the ingredients and mix well. Pour this marinade over the strips of meat. Cover and

refrigerate overnight.

In the morning, line cookie sheets with foil. Place strips of meat on the sheets – do not overlap the meat.

Preheat oven to 150-175 degrees; or the lowest temperature it has. Bake for 3 hours; turn the meat over and

bake for an additional 3 hours. Jerky is cooked when meat is dried out. Enjoy.

Kaimanawa Hunter Liaison Group Update From Gary Harwood And Mike Main,

NZDA Taupo Representatives. Track Maintenance:

We have a team of Three all set to go and carry out the track maintenance from the Oamaru Hut to the Boyd

Hut, they have had to postpone once due to the weather so this will be completed when a suitable weather

winder arrives.

Lower North Island Red Deer Foundation:

We have joined the Lower North Island Red Deer Foundation to add our numbers to their cause. They have

been heavily involved with WARO with the increasing WARO activity in the Ruahines and in the proposed

WARO review. WARO may not be a big issue for us in the Central North Island at the moment but with the

price of feral venison reaching high levels this could change. We need to support organisations that are

trying to protect the interests of recreational hunters. Check their web site on the following link.

https://www.lnirdf.org.nz/page/504133

The purpose of the Lower North Island Red Deer Foundation was to create a new Incorporated Society that could further the improvement of recreational hunting of red deer in the lower North Island, including fostering Game Management.

Corporate members are hunting clubs primarily from the Lower North Island region

Individual members are individuals or entities engaged in hunting and associated game management
