In recent months I have been hard at work down at City Hall fighting to strengthen our parks system, increase affordable housing, and improve quality of life in neighborhoods across District 7.

As chair of the City Council’s Parks Committee, I’m pushing for additional investments in this year's budget to support parks enforcement personnel, playground staffing, community gardens, urban park rangers, and a permanent extension of both the beach and pool seasons one week beyond Labor Day. I have led the charge for a new and visionary capital plan for parks that would focus investments in neighborhoods that have been long neglected. And I championed legislation through the City Council that would give our veterans and New Yorkers with disabilities a 75 percent membership discount at Parks Department-run recreation centers, allowing these groups of New Yorkers important opportunities to stay active and socialize at an affordable cost.

I am thrilled that the City Council has passed legislation that would end the era of giveaways to developers and mandate for the first time that every building built in an upzoned area must include affordable housing. This law will spur the development of thousands of units of affordable housing all over our city. It will offer particular relief for countless seniors who today are languishing on years-long waiting lists for affordable senior apartments. I’m pleased that the City Council is also strengthening anti-harassment laws to ensure that existing tenants can stay in their home.

While there is much work ahead of us, we are making progress towards the goal of keeping New York City a place where people of all backgrounds can afford to live and prosper. I’m honored to have the opportunity to work with you to build a fairer and stronger community for all of our neighbors.

I joined a coalition of advocates and elected officials at a press conference calling on the city to expand ferry service to the west side of Manhattan. It has been a personal mission of mine to ensure that our district has transit opportunities equal to those anywhere else in the city, and as we enter a new era of ferry service, I’m pushing for the West Harlem Piers at 125th Street Piers to be included in the plans. FIGHTING TO STRENGTHEN LOCAL PARKSLUCHA PARA FORTALECER LOS PARQUES LOCALES

My law, which created the first Office of Civil Justice, is helping New York City to achieve fairness for all New Yorkers in housing, immigration, and family courts. The Mayor recently named the first Civil Justice Coordinator who is leading the city’s efforts to expand free civil legal services to low-income New Yorkers, including tenants who are fighting eviction. I’m especially proud that the Office of Civil Justice is working with historic funding levels for anti-eviction legal services provided by the City Council and the Mayor in order to support all low-income New Yorkers and tenants throughout the five boroughs.

As co-chair of the NYC Council Affordable Housing Preservation Taskforce, I am working to ensure the city’s precious supply of affordable housing is secured. Among the existing stock of affordable housing, are the many Housing Development Fund Corporations (“HDFCs”) in northern Manhattan that provide low-income New Yorkers the opportunity to achieve homeownership. Too many of these cooperatives are struggling under burdensome costs. That’s why I have led the introduction of a group of bills that would provide much-needed relief and transparency for these buildings. I will continue to push for stronger oversight, so we can solve the root problems in this important program and preserve the dream of homeownership for all New Yorkers.

As chair of the Parks Committee, I believe every neighborhood deserves a healthy public green space. That’s why I fought to win millions of dollars for parks in last year’s budget,

and I’m pushing again this year to secure more support for these vital resources. From creating the long-planned comfort station along the river at West 159th Street to renovating St. Mary’s Park in the South Bronx, I’m fighting to continue the era of grand parks projects to support communities that have not benefited from the kind of resources that flow to parks in wealthier neighborhoods. On another front, I’m thrilled that the City Council passed my bill to give veterans and New Yorkers with disabilities a 75 percent membership discount at the city’s public recreation facilities. This new law will allow these groups of New Yorkers to have easy and affordable access to quality recreational space. I will continue to advocate for our parks to flourish in the fairest way possible so every neighborhood has access to a fabulous green space.

Como Presidente del Comité de Parques, creo que cada vecindario se merece un espacio público verde saludable. I was joined by my colleagues, veterans, and disability advocates as Mayor de Blasio signed my bill to provide a 75 percent discount to veterans and New Yorkers with disabilities at Parks Department-run recreation centers. I was proud to sponsor legislation honoring Norman Rockwell with a street co-naming at 103rd Street and Amsterdam near his place of birth. The co-naming was made possible by students at West Side High School who helped develop the “Norman Rockwell Place” bill in the City Council, in an effort to highlight Rockwell’s legacy and his depictions of life in small town America. Me sentí orgulloso de patrocinar la legislación que honra a Norman Rockwell con un conombramiento de calle en 103rd Street y Amsterdam, cerca de su lugar de nacimiento.
