Highlights of the Collectors’ Plant Sale

This year the Collectors’ Plant Sale will celebrate outstanding hardy trees and shrubs from The New YorkBotanical Garden’s beautiful and historic collections. You will find gorgeous specimens representing some of the Garden’s most iconic trees such as the graceful Himalayan white pine (Pinus wallichiana) in the Arthurand Janet Ross Conifer Arboretum, as well as the lacebark pine (Pinus bungeana) that greets visitors at theReflecting Pool and the trident maple (Acer buergerianum), a highlight of the Judy and Michael SteinhardtMaple Collection, the latter two prized for their dramatic exfoliating bark.

Along with saplings of these large trees, the Garden is excited to offer a selection of small trees and shrubspropagated from NYBG collections and chosen for their rarity and charm. The small-leaved rhododendroncultivar ‘Montchanin’ grows in the Azalea Garden but you would be hard pressed to find it in any nursery.Chinese witch-hazel (Hamamelis mollis), which borders the Home Gardening Center, has showy, sweet-smelling, long-lasting winter flowers that have been a favorite of Garden staff for decades. You will beintrigued by the uncommonly cultivated Meliosma cuneifolia, which is so uncommon that it lacks a commonname. In addition to these Garden favorites and botanical curiosities, there will be a small offering of plantsgrown from seed collected in the wild by Garden staff on recent trips to China and the Republic of Georgia.

For the herbaceous plant collector, the Sale will feature spring ephemerals and perennials that are notavailable in a typical garden center. For your woodland garden, charming anemones, lady-slipper orchids, andtrilliums, as well as the highly desirable Jeffersonia dubia, await. Look for two seedlings from the only pinkCardiocrinum giganteum var. yunnanense in cultivation, a handful of extraordinary blue Himalayan poppies,and exquisite species peonies.

From May 17 to September 7, the Garden-wide exhibition, Groundbreakers: Great American Gardens & TheWomen Who Designed Them, will celebrate early 20th-century America’s most influential women in landscapearchitecture and design as well as garden photography and writing. The Collectors’ Plant Sale will offerspecimens of some of the Garden’s best-loved plants found in NYBG landscapes originally designed by two of these enterprising women. Cultivars of Japanese apricot (Prunus mume) are among the earliest bloomingtrees of the season in the Ladies’ Border, originally designed by Ellen Shipman. These trees, which blossom asearly as February, are seldom offered in this area. You will find a large specimen of the pink, double-floweredcultivar ‘Dawn’ at the Sale, along with another hard-to-find favorite, Japanese torreya (Torreya nucifera). Thisevergreen tree thrives in the Benenson Ornamental Conifers, originally designed by Marian Coffin. These arejust a few of the gardener’s delights that will be available at the Collectors’ Plant Sale!
