Interview with Mr.Faouzi Chaabiby Nada Elmajdoub

Interview with YMEC 2007: soumaya Yacoubi

Can you tell us something about yourself? What is Vitaclub and how did you develop the idea?My name is Soumaya Yaakoubi and I’m originally From the North of Morocco where I started my university studies. In 1989 I got married at the age of 20 and left Morocco for Switzerland to finish my studies at Sciences University in Geneva. I also started my professional career there at the United Nations Environment Pro-gram (UNEP). After six years in Geneva, my husband and I came back to Rabat, the capital of Morocco, and I started working for the World Health Organization (WHO). At the same time, and for fun, I was organizing events and artistic exhibi-tions, applying what I had learned in Geneva where I was member of a Diplomatic Club. I did this for two years in Rabat until we moved to England for four years. Once in London, I decided to study Marketing with the Chartered Institute of Mar-keting. The director of the School had a travel agency and all our work was kind of related to this industry. That’s how I discovered my interest in this industry, and combined it with my passion for travel, wellness and health. I started thinking of opening the TRAVEL CLUB for VITALITY (later VITA CLUB Travel & Events) offering what a traveller could dream of in terms of discoveries and enjoyments for his wellness and good health. After I received my diploma, we moved to Ankara, Turkey for two years, then to Tokyo, Japan. Change helped me to understand different cultures and broadened my vision; moreover, I learned different concepts of quality and understood the importance of delivering quality services. At 35 years old, I decided to settle down again in my home country, and returned to work with the WHO in Rabat, then with UNDP until finally talking with a friend about realizing my dream of starting a travel agency.

What is VITA CLUB? Vita Club is a travel agency that considers its clients well-being first and lets them discover unexpected Morocco! We try through our programs to communicate to our customers that they deserve the best treatment and the best quality services. Once they buy from us they become members of a club which works to achieve the well being of its members. It’s more than just travel it’s a pampered journey. In 2009, we are programming long week-end packages every month to relax, escape stress and try new ways of living. We think our clients worth it. Please check our special packages at www.vitavoyages.com

How did YMEC help launch Vitaclub?Actually, YMEC was the booster, the competition that let me gain confidence in myself as an entrepreneur and in my project as a viable one. The fact that it was judged by experts as the winner of YMEC 2007 was very signifi-cant to me. And the prize of $3,000 went as the first payment for the VITA CLUB web site. The day after winning at YMEC, I announced to my colleagues at UNDP my decision. I am more than happy today to have done it and thankful to YMEC and AMPA to having encouraged it.

How is the future looking for Vitaclub? For the near future, we will continue in our efforts to gain new customers, new markets, to become known and to encourage people to try our services. Later, we hope to be able to offer a real original club for long stays along with the travel agency and continue our growth to serve our valued clients.

What is AMPA for you? Great network for great people, I hope someday I will be able to serve it in one way or another.

New York Event Coverage

New York Event Fundraiser

Quote from CSSF president

His Excellency the Ambassador of the Kingdom of Mo-rocco to the USA, kicked off the evening by addressing the at-tendance to emphasize on the importance of the associative action and praised AMPA for the key role it plays to reinforce the Moroccan-American friendship and business ties.

Echoing the Ambassador’s words, AMPA’s President Hicham Kabbaj, presented AMPA’s vision and stressed on the importance of tangible actions, the likes of the evening’s event, to raise funds and awareness towards helping Morocco achie-ve its developmental goals.

The attendance greatly enjoyed the fashion show that followed, which featured traditional Moroccan designer “Kaf-tans”. The auctioning of these dazzling works of Moroccan craftsmanship was instrumental in setting record level dona-tions. The Sefrioui-Badissi foundation also had a remarked participation through their graceful donation of 54 laptops to be distributed amongst the many CSSF centers throughout rural Morocco. After a very successful fundraiser that totaled upwards of $10,000.00, the event was concluded with an evening of Mo-roccan entertainment.

“…We were much exited to welcome you in Rabat and learn about your intention to helping us in our noble mission to provide education to young girls in Morocco…..That is way I say we don’t need to be thanked, because we are only doing our duty towards our country…..Many thanks to AMPA for coming forward and helping rural girls and Morocco as a whole”

Three young girls also represented the association; two of them are currently benefiting from the program, and the third is a college student who graduated thanks to CSSF. Ms. Khidani thanked all the Media and partners present. She also expressed her gratitude to AMPA for raising money and aware-ness on rural education. The US Ambassador Mr. Riley said that both him and his wife are personally involved in Girls’ education although it «faces big chal-lenges». He commended CSSF for their work that «goes beyond pro-viding a foyer, but also hope to these young girls». He also congra-tulated AMPA and its members for their initiatives and involvement in Morocco.

AMPA President, Hicham Kabbaj, thanked and congratulated CSSF team for their tremendous work with these young girls; he also emphasized and thanked AMPA members’ involvement in Moroccan education. Bouchra Adyel then presented the $11,371.78 check along with the laptops donated by Sefrioui-Badissy foun-dation to CSSF. This was a great exposure to both AMPA and CSSF in the Moroccan Media. CSSF: Rabat Press conference AMPA MEMBERS ACTIVITIES: Le Citoyen Marocain

Bouchra Adyel (VP Communication) and Nada Elmajdoub (Mentoring Program Coordinator) are active members of AMPA. As young Moroccan professionals in the US, they have participated in va-rious projects and associations. One of those projects is “Le Citoyen Marocain”. It has a very unique and powerful message which engaged these members to join the LCM team and seek a better future for Mo-rocco. Here is what they say about LCM…

1. Define « Le Citoyen Marocain » Project Bouchra: Le Citoyen Marocain (LCM) is a very ambitious project foun-ded by Mr. Salmane Belayachi. It seeks to stimulate the engagement of our young generation in the development of Morocco. As a very active member of my Moroccan and American communities, I stron-gly believe that No matter how small your contribution is to your surroundings, the outcome is always far greater than expected. It takes strong and determined citizens to take initiative and act rather than react to their environments. I see unlimited potential in Moroccans to have their “Moroccan Dream”. Le Citoyen Marocain is the right project at the right time to reintroduce the basic rule of any national development.

2. What are LCM Objectives?Bouchra: Le Citoyen Marocain seeks to adopt volunteering, commitment and competition as the image of true citi-zenship, sound development process and the definition of the new patriotism. To reinforce the Moroccan-Morocco partnership by considering that relationship to be the fundamental basis of any development effort. To organize a march from Layoune to Tangiers, intended to sensitize Moroccans by calling them to an unconditional commitment to the natio-nal development project. And finally, to create through this new patriotism, an invisible hand serving as a guide as well as a triggering agent of the development domino effect.

3. How did LCM start?Nada: On October 18th I got a call from Salmane. Back then I had no clue, that me pushing that little green button was going to determine my agenda for the following few months, perhaps even years as no one knows where an adventure as extraordinary as LCM could take me. He first told me about all the conversations he had had back home, this past summer, with several people and how they all felt somewhat “detached “from the Moroccan cause, how they didn’t feel a strong sense of belonging to their country, how they just didn’t care that much. Knowing Salmane, I could imagine how that bothered him as he was famous for his immeasurable passion for Morocco. All his projects, articles, blogs and notes attest of an exceptionally high patriotism, an awareness of the Moroccan potential and a pride of belonging to a unique nation. He wanted to walk to share his message of Hope and Optimism, to persuade all Moroccans to put Morocco in the very heart of their daily preoccupation and he couldn’t think of a better way than to go meet them face to face and share his message.I have to say that no matter how unusually interesting this idea first seemed to me, I stopped for a second and realized the evidence: I could not think of better fit to this particular job than him. So I gave him my go-ahead and as a conse-quence earned the huge privilege of running the LCM project.

4. Who helped you along the way?Nada: Two weeks after Salmane’s phone call, I left for Dallas to attend “Spotlight on Morocco” where I had the chance to meet with his Excellency Mr. Mekouar. I took the chance to approach him about LCM which he expressed a lot of enthusiasm for, made clairvoyant observations, then asked me to send him a description of the project via email.A week later Salmane was having his first meeting with Mrs. Rheljari and Mrs Afifi, at the Moroccan embassy in DC to jump start LCM. During that meeting, it was suggested to get our project adopted by a recognized Moroccan association in the US. I could not think of a better entity than MAC , not only was I a board member but Driss Temsamani, the pre-sident of MAC was also amongst the first people to adhere to the message and join the team.It only took an email to get an overwhelming response from the majority of the board, and the special interest of a few like Mr. Hassan Samghouni who readily offered their help and support in many capacities. On December 15th, while in Morocco, I received a txt message from Driss saying:”Urgent, call me”; which I did right away, only to hear him announce M.Chaabi’s interest to sponsor the entire project. A few days and phone calls later, I met with him and his PR director, Mrs. Hanane Bakali to kick off our collaboration. Almost at the same time, Khadija, Jawaher and Hassan were enga-ging in several LCM workshops with Focus groups here in the US bringing valuable ideas to the table. My job was to combine their suggestions with the outcomes of my work sessions in Morocco to assemble the LCM puzzle. After Driss initiated contact with M. Ameur minister in charge of Moroccans abroad, I had the chance to meet him and discuss the mission at his office in Rabat. It was concluded with his promise to do everything in his power to facilitate what needs to

AMPA MEMBERS ACTIVITIES: Le Citoyen Marocain

be completed for Salmane’s journey to take place. In only 9 weeks time, LCM team had managed to get the support of the Moroccan embassy, the Moroccan American civil society, the Moroccan government and a Private sponsor. As far as I’m concerned, that constitutes the irrefutable proof that the Domino Effect, backbone of our project, is indeed a reality.

5. How will LCM be implemented in Morocco? Bouchra: Le Citoyen Marocain is more than a walk from Laayoune to Tangiers. It is a march through which Salmane will convey his citizenship message to Moroccans along the way. It is also a series of round table sessions in key cities to incorporate the citizenship and development message in different themes (Education, Immigration, Arts& Culture, Economy, and Politics). Finally, once the walk is completed, it is a legacy to carry on. Le Citoyen Marocain will start a new phase which consists of creating LCM Chapters throughout Morocco. We acknowledge that this project is very ambitious, but we strongly believe in the message and thanks to a wonderful and very committed executive team, we will accomplish our goals.

6. What is LCM’s long-term vision? Nada: The ultimate goal is to raise a generation of “Possibilitarians” that believe in the values of citizenship, active participation in public life, discard negative feelings, regain hope and take responsibility for their own faith. The first step to a major change has to be about mentalities and attitudes. We truly believe that once Moroccans become fully aware of their duties towards their country, and at the same time, of the crucial impact of each and every one of their actions; Morocco would become a better place for every single one of us.

A New City Growing in Morocco

As with many countries, Morocco has been working towards finding solutions for their housing problems. As the population has been increasing over the years, there has been a housing shortfall and in 2002, a new trade zone was created in anticipation of the launch of a new project named Al Boughaz. The trade zone has grown to four hundred businesses, creating approxima-tely forty thousand job opportunities. The Al Boughaz project is the construction of a new city that will not only alleviate the housing dilemma but give hope of em-ployment and a new life to many as well as tourism opportunities. The new city is set to be called Ch’rafate and will be constructed on a 1 300 hectare piece of land that has been allocated for the building of the city. King Mohammed VI of Morocco recently announced the launch of the construction work that is estimated to be completed by the year 2020. An industrial area is also in-cluded into the plans, opening the doorway for businesses and industry moguls for new factories and business premises, and pro-viding the new residents of Ch’rafate with jobs. Located between the cities of Tetuan and Tangiers, the city of Ch’rafate will be conveniently situated and with new roads being provided, it will create an improved road network for this region of Morocco. The massive project will be overseen by Al Omrane Al Boughaz, a well known develo-pment company, together with internatio-nal property developers and national com-panies for assistance. Tanger-Med Port will be responsible for the housing develop-ment and the entire project will cost an es-timated $2.9 billion. A hundred and thirty thousand people will benefit from the thir-ty thousand housing units and developers have ensured that the buildings and pro-cedures are environmentally friendly and that all technical and geological standards have been met. Not only will residents gain from the industrial area and the housing development, but they will be able to take advantage of the planned tourism zone, green areas and handicrafts complex. The city of Ch’rafate will be a new start for many families, in various different ways. Housing developments in M’diq, Tangier, Fndeq and Tetouan are scheduled to begin in 2020.Houti and two of the original founders own 34 per cent of the bank.

Morocco’s aeronautics industry continues to grow By Sarah TouahriZodiac Aerospace Maroc is investing 135 million dirhams towards a new aeronau-tical project in Aïn Johra, confirming Mo-rocco’s advances in attracting investors and promoting the aeronautical sector. By Sarah Touahri for Magharebia in Rabat – 30/01/09Amidst fears of a slowing global econo-my, Morocco’s burgeoning aeronautics industry continues to attract foreign in-vestment. The ministries of new techno-logies and finance signed a deal on Mon-day (January 26th) in Rabat with Zodiac Aerospace Maroc to begin research and production of aeronautical equipment at the Aïn Johra industrial park, for an in-vestment of around 135 million dirhams. Minister of Trade, Industry and New Tech-

nologies Ahmed Reda Chami said that this latest agreement confirms Morocco’s calling to be a platform for investment in aeronau-tical trades. The Minister added that this agreement will allow the creation of 250 direct jobs, a large number of which will be engineering posts. «A strong presence in national engineering through this great project shows that Mo-rocco has taken another step in the field of aeronautics, which will not stop simply at construction, but will also include engi-neering and design.» In the past few years, the sector has seen considerable develop-ment, growing from near-zero in 2000 to a 250 million dollar industry employing 7,000 people. Seven major areas employ about 75% of those currently working in the sec-tor: cabling, middle management, composi-tes, mechatronics, sheet metals, fitting and machining. «The rapid development in the sector has been carried forward by benchmark opera-tors in the sector, such as EADS, Boeing and SAFRAN, who have given Morocco credibi-lity as a destination,» said Chami. A number of companies in Morocco are suppliers to European and American-based companies placing orders. Morocco is among those countries where subcontracting has a pro-mising future. The aeronautical sector is characterized by a strong French presence. The chairman of the French Union of Metal-lurgical Trades and Industries, Frédéric Saint-Geoure, said that Morocco’s economic and industrial development strategy to support high added-value industrial sectors, such as aeronautics, can only encourage French companies to open other nearby markets. «The strength of the Moroccan aeronau-tical sector lies in that it has developed as a network where customers and suppliers are right next door to each other,» said Tho-mas Corbel, manufacturer of aircraft engine components for the Airbus A320 and A340. «With geographical proximity restricting logistical costs, aeronautics subcontractors in Morocco have what they need to deal with the downward pressure on costs.» Chairman of the Moroccan Space and Ae-ronautical Industries Group (GIMAS) Hamid Benbrahim El Andaloussi is delighted with the development of the sector, feeling that it could not be more competitive. «Morocco has very quickly realized the potential of the fledgling industry that is aeronautics, iden-tifying it as a top-priority strategic sector in its Emergence plan. Training is one of the keys to success in our development strategy for this sector.»

leisure complex at the cost of $1.8 billion, the country’s state news agency MAP said, quoting the tourism minister.MAP named the consortium partners who signed the letter of intent to set up the project at the Atlantic city of Es-saouira as Itmar Development Abu Dhabi Investment and Bahrain-based Islamic investment bank Gulf Finance House. The initial accord was signed on the si-delines of the World Economic Forum in the Swiss ski resort of Davos, added MAP, quoting Tourism Minister Mohamed Boussaid as saying: «The importance of this project strengthens Morocco’s in-vestment attractiveness in the tourism business.»The planned project would involve buil-ding a resort of healthcare and leisure facilities over 270 hectares in Essaouira, one of Morocco’s main coastal tourism sites, MAP added. The tourism sector is Morocco’s primary foreign currency earner and main em-ployer after labor-intensive agriculture and the textile industry. It is also the country’s main attraction for foreign investment, with high-profile real estate and tourism projects financed by Arab Gulf investors worth some $20 billion.Analysts and people in the tourism in-dustry fear that a slowdown in tourism caused by economic recession in Europe and elsewhere might derail Morocco’s ambition to develop its tourism industry. The government hopes to increase the number of tourists visiting Morocco to 10 million in 2010 from 8 million last year.
