After acceptance in the USA the Jump Pad goes global

AFTER an exciting five years where the Jump Pad has grown substantially within the United States and Canada owner Dennis Macready has announced the product

has gained acceptance internationally.

“The initial launch of the Jump Pad in the United States was done with some trepidation but the product has now stood the test of time and it would

appear we have captured the imagination of campgrounds, rv resorts, corn mazes, pumpkin patches, orchards,

schools and play centers throughout the country” Macready said.

More recently the Jump Pad has been shipped direct from the manufacturer in California to England and now into Australia.

“We will continue to manufacture in the USA as the quality and service we get is paramount to the core company principle of giving outstanding customer service combined with a quality product at a great price”.

The Australian orders are currently being manufactured and due for shipping in a matter of weeks. Whilst the

Australian standards required some small changes to be made the similarities of standards between the two countries appear to have streamlined the process.

“The USA safety standards are part of the worldwide safety standards and I am pleased to announce The Jump Pad has gone out of its way to ensure compliance in every way possible. From day one with the initial design process safety was paramount and compliance with the standards was a must” Macready said.

KERNVILLE, Calif.- California didn’t receive nearly as much rain or snow as last year, but river rafting conditions in the Southern Sierra are “perfect” right now, according to the manager of Frandy Park Campground, which serves

three rafting outfitters.“The Kern River is at a

perfect level right now,” Demetriff said, adding that rafting companies will likely take people on tours on the upper Kern River through July 4th. After that, they will like

take them on rafting tours below Lake Isabella.

Three different whitewater rafting also have operations on the campground. These include Kern River Tours (www.kernrivertours.com), Whitewater Voyages (www.whitewatervoyages.com) and Sierra South (www.sierrasouth.com).

But even as summer progresses and water levels decline, Demetriff said families love to come to the campground because they can let their children play in the water without having to worry about high water levels.

Frandy Park Campground has RV and tent sites along the Kern River that are shaded by mature cottonwood trees. Four pioneer style covered wagons are also available for rent. Each comes equipped with a king size bed and two sets of bunk beds.

RALEIGH, NC – Armed with a mission to promote and advance the state park systems of America, the National Association of State Park Directors (NASPD), today announced the launch of America’s State Parks 2018 photo contest. The contest, which is open to residents of the U.S. age 18 and over, provides an opportunity to visually share experiences captured at the nation’s state parks over the last year1. The contest returns for a second year after receiving more than 8,000 qualified photo submissions and 105,000 website engagements during its inaugural 2-month run in 2017.

“The outdoor recreation community has been built

on the concept of sharing and America’s State Parks photo contest perfectly aligns with that,” said Lewis Ledford, executive director at National Association of State Park Directors. “NASPD looks forward to continuing to offer a forum in which the community can easily connect with each other and share the experiences our state parks have afforded them.”

With focus on highlighting real-life moments and celebrating the marvelous

essence of the country’s public lands, the contest encourages amateur photographers to submit photos taken at a state park within the five categories of camping, wildlife, activities, friends & family, and scenic & seasons. Qualifying submissions will be judged

on originality, artistic composition, technical quality, and effectiveness of the image in showcasing the best of America’s State Parks.

Mighway, an innovative new Airbnb style RV peer-to-peer platform connecting RV owners with travelers, partnered with NASPD to inspire people to participate in the contest. The contest’s grand prize winner will be awarded a package valued at $2,000, including a 7-day RV rental from Mighway, which is now rolling out across the U.S. “We partnered with NASPD as they share a similar vision for encouraging

the public to disconnect from their mobile devices and reconnect with nature in America’s spectacular state parks. It’s the perfect audience to introduce to Mighway, since many of the amateur photographers will want to rent an RV as their home base for the contest and beyond. Mighway aims to provide more inspiration with its Roadtrippers.com partner, which offers robust road trip ideas.”

Winners will also be selected from each of the contest’s five categories and will each receive a $500 REI gift card. From now until July 31, 2018, interested participants can submit their entries on the official parks photo contest website.

To ensure the delivery of modern, convenient online experiences to its contest entrants, NASPD engaged its trusted partner, AspiraTM, to manage the operations and promotion for the contest. Aspira, seasoned in providing technology and marketing services to park and conservation agencies across North America, will utilize its popular online camping community, ReserveAmerica.com, to increase awareness of America’s State Parks photo contest.

Start a disruption

SUCCESSFUL business concepts today generally involve entirely new ways of thinking. In the world of computer software and mobile apps, the terminology is known as disruptive technology, and it refers to the fact that nothing really new or transformative comes from simply applying a new coat of paint or polish to something old and familiar. In a broad sense, the personal computer and the cell phone were among the greatest disruptors of recent time.

If you go back in time, other

ground-breakers included the friction match, the printing press, the incandescent light bulb, the internal combustion engine, film, radio, television, and so on. Certainly, some of these inventions evolved over time rather than instantly bursting onto the scene. Television, for example, gradually evolved from radio to the flat-screen displays of today.

From the dozen local VHF channels of the early years, came UHF adapters, cable, and satellite systems that now bring hundreds of

programming options into the home of any subscriber. Even the remote control has evolved by leaps and bounds from the original Zenith Flash-Matic, introduced in 1955, to the programmable, multi-function devices of today. I remember a very primitive one-button remote control on my family’s Sylvania console TV back in the 1960s. We could not watch TV during a thunderstorm because lightning made the remote control go crazy, endlessly changing the channels on the motorized tuner!

Disruptive ideas are far from limited to the technology industries. In the

customer service industries, we need to think less like our grandparents and more

like our next generation of customers. For campground owners, this means thinking

outside the box, seeking out the next new idea that will appeal to your guests. When was the last time you invested in a major piece of new recreational equipment? Not simply a new playground, but things like a fitness course, canine agility park, jumping pillow, gem mining station, laser tag, or spray park. And when is the last time that you really shook up your activities schedule, adding an event or two that will run the risk of being ahead of its time but that could also prove to be overwhelmingly popular?

There are a couple businesses in New Jersey that fall under the “who wudda thunk it?” head-scratcher concept category. Stumpy’s Hatchet House was founded in 2015. Its first location, in Eatontown, was the first indoor hatchet-throwing facility in the United States, probably a lot more fun than either bowling or darts. Customers pay $40.00 per person for a two-hour session that includes safety training, a lesson, hatchet rental, and use of a hatchet pit. A separate party room can be rented by groups, or the entire venue can be rented for $1,500.00 per hour (up from $1,000.00 a year ago.) Spectators (referred to as “non-throwers”) pay a cover charge of $15.00 each. Stumpy’s is opening 3 more locations in June 2018, with a total of 12 locations soon to be in operation in 7 states.

LEFT: Stumpy’s Hatchet House BELOW: Diggerland USA

Jersey, Diggerland USA is the first and only construction themed adventure park in North America, where children and families can drive, ride and operate actual heavy construction machinery. The park covers about 21 acres and is comprised of over 25 attractions, the majority of which are real, diesel powered, full size, pieces of construction equipment. Guests who visit Diggerland USA can drive full size backhoes, dig giant holes with real excavators, and operate just about every sort of construction machine you might imagine. Guests pay $129.00 for a one-hour package operating one

machine, $258.00 for a two-hour package operating two machines, $387.00 for a three-hour package operating three machines, and an extra $395.00 to smash a car. There are also group packages

and special adult sessions called Diggerland XL, designed for adults over the age of 18 and including more unrestricted equipment operation.

Both of these businesses fall under the umbrella category of the adult fun industry.

Time will tell whether these ventures will take off and succeed in the long run, but most service businesses today are not planning where they will be 50 years from

now. Serial entrepreneurs

work within a far shorter

time-frame (typically 10 years)

within which to take risks,

hopefully profit, move on to

the next venture, and sell to a

new investor. When you come

right down to it, how many

campgrounds are not currently

for sale, given the right price

and circumstances, along with

a ready and willing buyer?

A park that embraces

concepts on the cutting

edge (no hatchet-throwing

or excavator puns intended)

will profit in the short run

and tremendously

increase its value in

the long run.

A PAIR of Florida development companies are proposing a 330-space recreational-vehicle park on 50 acres at the south end of

Kalispell, MT. The park would be called Montana Basecamp.

The developers, Orlando, Florida-based Montana Basecamp Inc. and Basecamp

Outpost LLC, are working to purchase the property at 3260 U.S. 93 South near the intersection with Ashley Meadows Road. According to documents submitted to the city, the sale is expected to close mid-July.

In a letter to city officials, the developers hope to capture high-end, physically fit clientele with a quality offering of amenities.

“We envision a large 50-acre lush paradise of camping positioned neatly toward the city core of Kalispell. Our location was decided on solely due to its proximity to downtown Kalispell and

the Great Northern Bike Trail that connects Montana Basecamp to all that Kalispell has to offer,” the letter reads. “Biking and jogging is a key activity being used to promote Montana Basecamp. We hope to connect with all of the biking and jogging that happens in and around Kalispell.”

The developers also state it will be a family friendly facility.

“We have a zero-tolerance policy anything outside of healthy family vacationing,” the letter reads.

RALEIGH, NC - Damage assessment teams are checking out western North Carolina this week to survey the destruction caused by last week's mudslides caused by heavy rain.

Teams will make assessments to see if any state or federal aid could be

available to help those hit hard by the storm. The federal government would determine whether or not areas qualify for federal disaster recovery funds.

“Western North Carolina has been pummeled by relentless rain in the past two weeks with many areas

getting nearly two feet of rain,” North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper said. “We know it will take these communities time and support to recover, and experts are on the ground now to survey the damage and see what help is needed.”

Two died in Boone after a home collapsed last Wednesday. A mudslide closed portions of I-40 east of Asheville and triggered evacuations of Old Fort and a community near Lake Tahoma in McDowell County. A State of Emergency was declared for several western NC counties.

Local officials made

damage assessments last weekend while state and local emergency managers met Monday to discuss the damage assessment process. Tuesday, teams comprised of local, state and federal emergency managers will canvass impacted communities to survey damages. The teams expect to complete their assessments next week.

THERE are several things that set the campground industry apart. First of all, processors are equal to the task of treating many of the various industries differently. There are restaurants where credit card transactions usually require “tip programs”, there is the brick and mortar retail store that deals with swipe transaction which requires the use of the new chip cards, then there are other industries that rely on transactions either

over the Web, or through a cell phone, or a combination of swipe and non-swipe transactions. Of course, there are hotels which take reservations over the phone or on the Web.

The campground industry is unique because it can be many of these things or even all of them. We have campgrounds we service that have stores, restaurants, bars and separate paid attractions – and they take reservations.

Another difference is that approximately 70% of the industry is seasonal. Many processing banks make owners pay monthly minimums, PCI charges, statement fees and other fees, when the campgrounds are closed. I can’t tell you how many campgrounds have been influenced to sign up with us because we suspend ALL fees for up to 6 months. This can save them from $300 to $500 a year in money that

banks just love and owners just hate paying.

Eighteen years ago, I started MCPS of Central PA to sell credit card services to local businesses. For several years after that I sold credit cards to local merchants giving them rates that were competitive and by the 2nd year had over 100 accounts. I was making a decent living. In my third year I met the late Lash LaRue, who worked with me

for nearly four years before he died of a heart attack at a relatively young age of 54.

But by then, almost accidently, I discovered the campground industry. I had signed Shangri-La on the Creek, a campground in Milton, PA and only three months after their signing the owners sold the camp to Bruce Bryant whose business was in Texas but had purchased this PA campground.

Because of a series of incidents that occurred shortly thereafter, Lash and I diverted our attentions from the local market and started to sell the services to campgrounds throughout the US. Once again, there were few processors who aggressively “attacked” the market. Our simple objective was to save every campground money on their processing. We did this by asking to see a statement

from their present processor and simply beat the rates they were getting. We also wanted

to make sure the savings accomplished two things. The savings was one and we wanted these customers not to leave us because of rates and service.

We did all we could to embroil ourselves in the industry. We joined dozens of State and Regional campground associations, attended dozens of nationwide trade shows, began to write articles for trade newspapers, conducted free webinars on demand about evolving changes in credit cards and even purchased a 30-foot yurt as our office because we had seen them at an ARVC show.

Almost simultaneously to Lash’s passing, Deanne Bower began to work with me. That was 12 years ago. There is no smarter, more detail-oriented woman in the campground business. She is extremely well liked by owners of

campgrounds and suppliers alike. She’s a get-things-done kind of person in an industry that totally relies on customer service.

The fact that our industry is seasonal means that 70% of our income disappears during the months of November through February. The Christmas season, the number one shopping season, is very poor for MCPS for Campgrounds. However MCPS of Central PA is attempting to make up the difference.

Art Lieberman is President of MCPS for Campgrounds and has been in the industry for over 18 years and has been conducting free webinars online and seminars on credit cards in many State and Regional Association Conventions. He can be contacted at 877-858-9010 or at [email protected].)

MENDOCINO County, Cali voters rejected the extension of a lodging tax to cover private campgrounds and RV parks, proposed to help buoy the county’s budget for general services by $1 million a year.

Measure G failed by a margin of 53 to 47 percent, including ballots from all 250 precincts. Mail-in ballots were still being counted Wednesday but the result was not expected to change.

“It’s not surprising to me,” said Dan Hamburg, chairman of the Board of Supervisors.

“People who go camping or go RV camping probably

like not paying the fees. I think there’s a good argument for having a (lodging tax) that applies equally to campgrounds. A lot of the services that people use when they use campgrounds are similar to what they use at other types of lodging in the county.”

The county already charges a 10 percent fee on stays of 30 days or fewer at all hotels, inns and guesthouses, but unlike neighboring counties, not at private tent sites or overnight parking areas for recreational vehicles.

Proponents of the ballot measure argued it would close

a loophole that favored private campgrounds and RV parks.

With a 5-0 vote in February, the Board of Supervisors

advanced the measure to the ballot.

Lake George RV park hosting massive motorcycle rally

QUEENSBURY, N.Y. - Some people attending Americade ride in style to get a campsite to ride their motorcycles.

Bob Browne of Myrtle Beach, a retired motorcycle cop who lived in Yonkers, was camped out Wednesday at the Lake George RV Park with his 43-foot-long trailer, complete with a bath and a half and four televisions. He said it is very convenient.

“We can bring our dogs with us,” he said. “You’re not packing or unpacking.”

Browne has been riding motorcycles for more than 40 years. He said he likes the feel of being out in the elements. After attending Americade, he planned to travel to San Diego before coming back to the East Coast and then back to Myrtle Beach.

Camping is very popular

for people who attend the weeklong motorcycle festival in Lake George, according to Lake George RV Park co-owner Sue Hunsicker. Being three miles south of the village makes it very convenient for motorcycle enthusiasts.

“It’s very quiet and peaceful in the park,” she said. “A lot of them travel with their bikes in their trailer in tow.”

The campground offers ample parking, and there are amenities such as a café and

nightly movies, according to Hunsicker.

Dale Honney of Scranton, Pennsylvania, said the RV park offers a nice flat terrain that makes it easier to roll the motorcycles in and out and it is close to everything.

Dan Kaszubowski, of Erie County, said before staying in RV parks, he used

to get a hotel room.

“This makes it more comfortable,” he said.

Kaszubowski, a mechanic

by trade, was having difficulty finding an RV and trailer that would accommodate his motorcycles - his collection includes two trike motorbikes, a motorcycle with sidecar and a standard motorcycle - so he renovated a vehicle to create his own 40-foot trailer.

“It’s built to go cross-country,” he said.

Another advantage of staying in the park is the camaraderie with fellow motorcyclists. Kaszubowski and his wife, Colleen, were enjoying some lunch outdoors with Mike Spagnola and his wife, Mary.

“Being with friends - what more could you ask for?” Mike Spagnola said.

HENDERSON County, N.C. - A glamour camping - or "glamping" campground - may move into Henderson County on the failed Seven Falls development site.

Montana-based Under Canvas Inc. had a site plan approved for the land previously slated for an upscale community and Arnold Palmer golf course.

Glamping is a growing trend of "luxurious" camping where the host provides all the provisions needed.

Those with the company need to get a special use permit before they can start glamping.

"This was formerly my family farm, and when Seven Falls came about, we sold the farm for the development," Pam Banks said.

Banks' family sold the development in 2006.

"Of course, it was made public in 2007," Banks said.

In 2009, the developer filed for bankruptcy and was later convicted on fraud charges and sentenced to 18 years in prison.

"Well a lot of things happened [with the land], but nothing happened with it," Banks said.

CATSKILL, N.Y. - A proposed campground law drafted by the town board without the participation of local businesses was aired Tuesday, with Catskill Town Supervisor Doreen Davis holding herself accountable for the omission.

Campground owners are not sitting around a campfire singing the praises of the law, which they said is too restrictive.

Residents and business owners packed the Catskill Town Hall for a public hearing Tuesday on a proposed law to regulate transient camping and the operation and maintenance of campgrounds for transient use.

No property owner can allow his or her land to be used for camping unless they

have obtained a campground license, according to a draft of the proposed law.

THE ORIGINS

The town has never had a set of regulations for camping projects and the law will help officials decide on them more easily, Planning Board

Chairman Joseph Izzo said during the meeting.

“That’s why we’re looking at this law, because we can’t make a decision based on what you want without having a set of guidelines,” Izzo said. “Unless we have a set of regulations, a set of goals that we can put, and look at,

on a piece of paper, you may end up with something in a neighborhood that nobody wants.”

The hearing served as an opportunity for residents to look at the proposed law and comment on it, Catskill Town Supervisor Doreen Davis said.

“We wanted to have some consistent regulations so that all proposals are treated fairly, that was our initial intent,” Davis said.

THE PUBLIC SPEAKSLearning of the proposed

law, Brookside Campground co-owner Bonnie Schroader said Wednesday it raised concerns. Schroader, who attended the meeting with her husband Jerry, Brookside’s co-owner, called the town office to get an explanation of what the law entails.

Brookside has been in business for 13 years.

“It was the first attempt - they [officials] thought it sounded good, but didn’t realize the economic impact of it,” she said. “It took us by surprise, as it did everybody.”

The towns of Cairo and Windham don’t have a law similar to what Catskill is proposing. Such a law would devalue the campground, making it hard to sell in the future, Schroader said.

The Schroaders spent $250,000 to add 24 new campsites about eight years

ago, a feat that couldn’t have been achieved with strict regulations.

“Under this law, we wouldn’t be able to do that,” she said.

Many Brookside campers arrive in large groups of 10, Schroader said.

“We’ve made a niche in that area because we have large comfortable sites for large families,” Schroader said.

Many workers on construction projects in the county remain in the area from 3 months to a year and stay at the campground in recreational vehicles because it’s more homey, Schroader

said. The county receives an economic benefit because anyone living in the state for more than 30 days pays state tax.

“They’re bringing in extra income - we have three guys here right now, they’re here till November,” she said. “They’d rather do that [stay in an RV] than stay in a motel.”

Schroader left the meeting confident the town board listened to her concerns, she said.

Daniel Ellett, of Catskill, owns two large pieces of property and wants to have a rustic camping site where he would take visitors hiking, he

said.The proposed law would be

bad for those business plans, Ellett said.

“You’re going to tell me I’m wrong for having my friends, my family and everybody there, I don’t understand how you can make this regulation,” he said. “You’re restricting what the property owners’ values are or what our rights are.”

Greene County has missed out on several opportunities to attract business, but surrounding counties have succeeded, Ellett said. The lifelong Catskill resident asked the town board not to make a rush decision on the law.

“I don’t understand why Greene County is the last to evolve,” Ellett said. “I feel like there’s been an apocalypse for my whole life. I said when s*** hits the fan, we’re going to laugh it off because we’ve been living in the depths of

hell our whole life here in Greene County.”

Davis addressed the audience and explained why the law is being proposed and took responsibility for not including local business owners in its drafting.

“We looked, we had nothing, we took a shot,” she said. “Nobody came into this job trying to prevent business.”

The proposed law is important to keep noise under control and weed out troublemakers, Kathy Holtz, of Catskill, said after the meeting. She has dealt with a neighbor running an illegal camp for two years.

“You can’t just bring a bunch of people to a property and say they’re going to camp,” Holtz said. “People come from upstate, they want to move into our woods.”

The law will not affect campground owners who run their businesses properly, Holtz said.

“This is to control those that are doing things they’re not supposed to do,” she said. “You need to have laws, just like you have parking laws.”

AFTERMATH

Davis invited further comment to hash out the law.

“We benefited greatly from some of their constructive suggestions,” Davis said. “All of them have done a good job of taking a look at the proposed regulations.”
