From the Principals Desk

A warm welcome to students, parents and the Condobolin High School community to Term 2. I hope everyone enjoyed a restful holiday. ANZAC During the break we commemorated a number of ANZAC services within the Condobolin community. I had the pleasure to speak at the Masons service Emma Kennedy spoke at the service at the local Nursing home with Miss Rees where a number of our students also admirably assisted. Many thanks also to all of the students and families who supported the Condobolin community ANZAC March. Numbers were down on previous years, however those who braved the inclement weather reflected on the freedoms we currently enjoy due to the sacrifice of previous generations. Special mention must go to Madison Jolliffe who spoke about the contribution her father made in the Army and his service in particular in East Timor. I have received countless positive comments in regard to all the students and staff and their contributions to these services over the holiday period.

Make Online Payments It is now possible for parents to make online payments to the school for amounts owing for students, via a secure payment page hosted by Westpac. Payments can be made using either a Visa or MasterCard credit or debit card. The payment page is accessed from the front page of the schools website by selecting $ Make a payment. Items that can be paid include voluntary school contributions, subject contributions, excursions, sales to students and creative and practical arts activities. There is also a category called Other - this is to cover items not covered in the previous headings. Other can be used to make a complete payment of a school invoice. When you access the $ Make a payment you must enter: the students name, and class and reference number OR the student’s name and date of birth. These details are entered each time you make a payment as student information is not held within the payment system. There is also the option to enter the Student Registration Number and Invoice number if you are aware of them; these are optional fields. This is a secure payment system hosted by Westpac to ensure that your credit/debit card details are captured in a secure manner; these details are not passed back to the school. You have the ability to check and change any details of the payment before the payment is processed. Receipts can be emailed and/or printed. Details of the payments are passed daily to the school where they will be receipted against your child’s account. As a receipt has been issued from the payment page, a further receipt will not be issued by the school. For any enquiries regarding the Online Payment process, please contact the School Administration Office.

School Improvements Over the break there was considerable work again within the school. It is hoped much of this work improves the visual aspect of the school as well as making for a much more efficient and productive school. Can I especially thank the Earney Family - Andrew, Anne and Henry, the Hughes Family - Peter, Mel, Tara and Mr Fred Eldridge for putting in the yards and concrete platform in the Agricultural plot, this was all voluntary and very much appreciated. Staff Development Day (SDD) The SDD held in Orange and was a combined day with colleagues from other secondary school across the region and provided many networking and sharing opportunities. Staff participated in workshops and in key learning groups establishing the tools to effectively deliver meaningful lessons with a focus on Technology in the classroom. I look forward to seeing the learning from the day translated into classroom learning. Staff Professional Learning Evening A three hour evening focusing on Positive Behavior for Learning was held on the 3rd of May. Presentations and workshops were delivered by our PBL team and it was well received. The data is suggesting that this whole school focus is creating a more positive learning environment that enables all students to learn in a more safe and supportive school. A new rewards system is being rolled out in the coming weeks. Cross Country In fantastic weather last Wednesday our school Cross Country Carnival was run. Many of our students put in a great effort and enjoyed the afternoon. Thanks to Miss Norton and the staff for organising and running such an excellent event.

NAPLAN This week we held NAPLAN testing for Years 7 and 9. The results of these tests are a very useful measure for staff and parents to assess student progress, but also for staff to identify areas of development for students. Secondary Principal Meeting This week I will be hosting approximately 15 Principals from the Central West. This is an excellent opportunity to showcase our school and the community. The meetings, presentations and workshops will take place at the Wiradjuri Centre and the school. If you see these principals about please make them feel very welcome.

Year Advisors 2018 It gives me great pleasure in announcing our Year Advisors for 2018. Miss Sarah Kelly and Miss Anne Wadsworth. They are very keen to get to know our Year 7 intake. They are already planning a Year 7 camp and are undertaking peer support training in readiness for next year.

Lote News

Bonjour!

This Term LOTE students have been immersing themselves in the language and culture of France. Students are now familiar with greetings, counting, the alphabet, gestures and simple sentences. They have completed a scrap book on Paris which has enabled them to become familiar with local monuments, museums, food and means of transport in and around the city. French children celebrate April Fool’s Day by sticking fish on to the backs of their friends. This is a very old custom that goes back to the 1190’s whereby Lent was observed by eating fish and giving up more appetising food, in order to mark the approach of Easter. Our students had fun performing this practical joke last Friday. The word ‘mordu’ or ‘bitten’ is said to the person that has been fooled. The LOTE classes ended the week by sampling a range of French food – the Quiche Lorraine was a massive hit as was the chocolate eclairs. We are looking forward to another fun and interesting Term 2 as our studies progress into this fascinating culture and elegant language. A Bientot!

Week 1 started off with a bang when both the Boys and Girls Opens Touch Teams went on an excursion to compete in the Western Region Opens Touch Football Carnival at Mudgee. Students from 22 other schools throughout our Western Region were competing. Both of our teams played great on the day. Our girls won 2 out of the 4 games, with tough games against representative picked opposition sides. The boys also worked really hard with only 1 substitute player, yet were unable to get a win. Mr Heffernan and Miss Kelly would like to say a special thank you to Mr Fyfe, who drove the bus over and back from Mudgee ensuring that each of our students arrived safely and happily; we couldn't have done it without him. Thank you to the students for a great excursion, and for your excellent representation of Condobolin High School on the day. Well Done! Miss Sarah Kelly

Students have been issued with Assessment Booklets; these booklets are also available on the Condobolin High School Website for each Year Group. These booklets are an important document for every child. They outline the assessment requirements for each subject across every year, outline the procedures to follow in terms of applying for an extension or misadventure and include a copy of the Board of Studies key terms. Some important information for parents and students: Each assessment task requires a minimum of two

weeks’ notice to be given. Students are expected to sign a receipt of task at the time the task is issued. If a student is away from school it is their responsibility to seek out any missed assessments or classwork.

No more than TWO assessment tasks should be due

in each week for any year group. Please contact myself at school if this is not the case for your child.

All Stage 6 (Year 11 & 12) tasks are due on Monday

mornings before 9.00am. These are to be emailed to [email protected]

For any change of date of assessment your child

should receive a notification in writing advising of the new date.

All submitted assessments and quizzes are to be returned within two weeks. Again please feel free to contact myself if this is not occurring, and the assessment committee will be able to investigate the issue.

If your child cannot attend school on the day of an

assessment, or has been unable to complete an assessment due to reasons including – Sickness, Carers Responsibilities or Illness in the family, they must apply for either an Extension (If before the due date) or Misadventure. They need to collect these forms from Head Teachers and return with appropriate documentation to myself for processing.

We are hoping that by implementing new policies and procedures, that assessments at Condobolin High School, become more streamlined and meaningful for our students. Miss Melissa Rees Assessment Coordinator

NEWSLETTER May 2017 Term 2 Week 3

The focus on CHS Wellbeing lessons will be on Bullying and Developing Resilience in students for Term 2. I have included some strategies and community support links that may assist parents in supporting their child if this is occurring to them? The important thing to remember is that you need to communicate any problems your child maybe experiencing with the school. HT Wellbeing Sonja Honeysett Understanding Bullying How can we identify bullying? What is bullying? The national definition of bullying for Australian schools says: bullying is an ongoing misuse of power in relationships through repeated verbal, physical and/or social behaviour that causes physical and/or psychological harm. It can involve an individual or a group misusing their power over one or more persons. Bullying can happen in person or online, and it can be obvious (overt) or hidden (covert). Online bullying refers to: bullying through information and communication technologies, e.g. the internet or mobile devices. Bullying of any form or for any reason can have long-term effects on those involved, including bystanders. Single incidents and conflicts or fights between equals, whether in person or online, are not defined as bullying. In short, bullying is an ongoing misuse of power in relationships involving a pattern of harmful verbal, physical or social behaviour.

What can parents do if bullying happens? There are six key steps for parents if their child tells them they have been bullied: 1. listen calmly to what your child wants to say and make sure you get the full story 2. reassure your child that they are not to blame and ask open and empathetic questions to find out more details 3. ask your child what they want to do and what they want you to do 4. discuss with your child some sensible strategies to handle the bullying – starting a fight is not sensible 5. contact the school and stay in touch with them 6. check in regularly with your child. If bullying happens online, some of the strategies for face-to-face bullying may apply and as well, suggest that the child: 1. avoid responding to the bullying 2. block and report anyone who is bullying online 3. protect yourself online – use privacy settings and keep records. What should parents avoid telling their children to do? Strategies not recommended for dealing with bullying include: 1. fighting back 2. bullying the person who has bullied them 3. remaining silent about the problem.

Bullying and How Parents Can Support their Child at CHS —continued

This weeks PBL focus is allowing others to Learn within the Classroom Environment. Sounds simple right? But it is important to know what this looks like and how to behave in a way that facilitates this. Students looked at ways to be Smarter, Stronger and Prouder by always remembering to allow others to finish their sentences, to listen when others speak and be accepting of others opinions. Students can help themselves and others to learn by supporting each other and creating a Smarter, Stronger and Prouder environment.

ASPIRE—Dubbo visit This week five Year 11 students travelled to Dubbo for the ASPIRE Focus on Success Program run by the University of New South Wales. In total 44 students travelled to Dubbo from places such as Lightening Ridge, Walgett, Coonamble, Coolah, Ungarie, Mendooran and Lake Cargelligo. We arrived in Dubbo at 6 in the evening and participated in a trivia night based on faculties at UNSW. On Tuesday morning students were involved in Personal Success & Mindset, Applying for University, Careers Panel and Mapping the Future programs. In the afternoon we travelled to the zoo and were given talks about Careers in the Zoo and then did a Twilight Tour, having a close look at the black and white rhinos, giraffes and hippos and a BBQ Dinner. On Wednesday we broke into groups and looked at the following programs discussing:- Uni life, Stress Management, Personal Branding and Personal Branding. Wednesday night we had a buffet dinner at the Railway Bowling Club and went ten pin bowling. Thursday we were involved in brain training and study tips and made our way home to Condobolin after lunch. A big thank you to ASPIRE for providing accommodation, all food, activities, along with running the Focus on Success program.

ASPIRE—ADFA visit At the end of last term two students from Condobolin High travelled with students from other LAP schools to participate in the ASPIRE-ADFA program. They arrived in Canberra on Tuesday evening for dinner and to meet up with other schools involved in the ASPIRE program and then went to the Escape Room. On Wednesday the students travelled to ADFA (Australian Defence Forces Academy) to be shown around by Defence Force personnel. This included looking at lecture rooms, marching grounds, tree of knowledge and other buildings. Lunch was held in the Mess Hall for the students and then they got to have a go on a simulator. After this the students were taken to the War Memorial and given a special guided tour. On Wednesday the students were taken to the race course to participate in the commando course. This involved crawling through mud under netting and getting themselves over a climbing wall, all conditions similar to what they would experience in the defence forces. Students were hosed off in the end. Thankfully, Levi Monshing, the teacher from Lake Cargelligo had army reserve training and was able to assist the students through this difficult course. The students travelled home to Condobolin after this. Thank you to ASPIRE for running the program and to Mr Monshing for transporting and looking after the students.

Work Experience Work Experience is the last week of this term for all Year 10 students. All Work Experience notes should be completed by students and their parent/carers and handed to Mrs Moon or Mrs Doyle by now. By not having these forms signed it means students may miss out on where they want to do Work Experience as there is a larger number requiring work experience placement this year and some businesses are limited. During the holidays 3 Hyline chickens had an adventure visiting the Royal Easter Show. The hens were entered in the school Hyline Chicken competition. This competition is open to all schools across NSW and in 2017 80 schools entered. The chickens were delivered to the school in Term 4 2016 and the students have been caring for them. They started to lay in early March ready to be entered in the show. Thankyou to Richard and Heather Cole for transporting the chickens to Sydney. The Hens arrived at the show and settled into a 2 week stay at the show. The chickens were judged on their body conformation and structure on the first day of the show. The eggs they produced at the show are also judged. The results were returned and Condobolin High School was placed 8th. congratulations. The chickens have returned to school and have settled back into live at the Ag Farm. Alpacas With the Ag Farm increase sheep numbers two alpacas have come to school to guard them. MONK and MINDY are just under one year old and have had little human contact. Debbie O’Neil from Signature Alpacas came to school on the 4th May to give Stage 5 Ag and Year 12 Primary Industries an introduction on how to handle alpacas and the Alpaca industry in Australia. Mrs O’Neil gave the Alpacas a pedicure while she was at school. Thank you Mrs O’Neill and we look forward to working with you later in the year. Clearing Sale Year 11 Primary Industries attended the clearing sale at the Watt Farm “Mookabri” on the 5th May. The class operated the canteen during the sale and the students were able to view the items for sale and talk with local farmers. A clearing sale is a very important part of a farmers’ life and so to be involved in this allowed the students to see how a farmer finished their farming career. What is BYOD? Bring Your Own Device, or BYOD, is a technological trend in education and in the corporate world. BYOD recognises that technology and choices about technology are very much personal. BYOD acknowledges technology in education means more than meeting specific curriculum requirements. BYOD is designed to give you, as students and families, freedom to make technology choices that suit you and all your circumstances. How does it work? As an enrolling student, your child will be encouraged to participate in the school’s BYOD program and bring a device to school each day. The school makes recommendations as to the model of device students may choose to bring. Or you can bring something of your own choosing that meets our Device Specification. There is also some software that is required on the device. In most cases there are free options for software. Students are required to sign a User Charter that sets out how the device can be used at school. The schools BYOD and Technical Support Officers (Miss Kelly and Mrs Haworth) are available to answer questions and to give assistance. However, the school does not manage, support, own or warranty the device - it's your device.
