Feature Story: Alder Creek Middle School

A young lady was referred to the Northwest Family Services (NWFS) school mentoring program be

had 75 absences last school year. While working with this young lady I quickly learned that she and

were facing many challenges. I began asking the questions that others were not. One of the questio

was, “What do you need to be successful?” She said, “Well, I asked my mom if I get good grades, c

bed.” In conversation with this student, I found out that she was the only member of her household w

have a regular place to sleep. Some nights she slept on the floor, other nights she slept on the sofa.

dent had a stepfather who went to work at 5am. When her stepfather would get up for work, her mo

make breakfast using the blender and other loud kitchen appliances. By the time things quieted do

she made it back to sleep, it was time for her to get ready for school. Tired and moving slowly, she

late for the bus, causing her to have to walk to school.

Northwest Family Services staff was able to find a local organization who donated display beds. In O

we delivered a queen sized bed to the student’s home while she was at school. Once the bed was dNWFS contributed funds to purchase brand new bedding and pillows. While this student and her fa

still being faced with challenges, the bed is one less thing she and her family have to be concernedstudent’s attendance has gotten much better.

Prepare Enrich Feedback

After completing Prepare Enrich, what is the oneconcept that will have the most impact on your

relationship?

Jamie: The number one thing that I personally learned is to make our relationship the number one pri-

ority, and that’s a daily goal, a yearly goal; to always look at our relationship as number one.

Jeremy: To add to that, I like the fact that program prepares you for the future by asking those ques-

tions that maybe you had not discussed or brought up like kids, education, church, family, where you

want to live and finances. It gets you thinking and talking about those future events and preparing youto be on the same page or at least communicating about it so there are no surprises.

Recently, NWFS

raised over $3,000

 with 50 friends inattendance, at

Oswego Hills

 Vineyard & Winery.

The event’s

proceeds directly support counseling services.

Thank you all donors and volunteers who m ade

this a success!

Kelly is 54-year-old woman that

was married to a very abusiveand controlling husband. She

spent most of their marriage rais-

ing their children, keeping thehome clean, and attending col-

lege. After 20+ years of mar-

riage, Kelly’s husband decidedhe wanted a divorce. He forced

her to leave the relationship withnothing but a backpack. She lost

her home, her possessions, but

most of all she lost her identity.

Kelly’s church arranged for herto move into the basement of an

elderly woman, where she pro-

vided care in exchange for room

and board. When I met Kelly, she was completely broken and

unable to see how she would find

her way out.I referred her to:

power. On 9/8/13, Kelly called

me to say that she was hired atthe Cannon Beach Convention

Center as a Conference Assis-tant. She starts on 9/11/13 and is

so excited. The position includes

room, board, wages and the op-portunity to participate in fea-

tured conferences. As of

10/8/13, Kelly is settled into hernew position and is grateful to be

back to work.
