North West Auctions held the dispersal sale of Friesian Dairy Cows and Youngstock on behalf of the late Mr Allan Armitstead, Hullater Farm which saw a full ringside of buyers in attendance from the Northern Counties and Midlands.

The sale topped at £2050 for a fresh 3rd calved cow with 2

nd calvers selling to £1880 and heifers £1750.

In calf cows peaked at £1320 for December calvers carrying Limousin x calves.

Youngstock experienced fierce bidding with bulling heifers £960 maiden heifers £800 with heifer calves £570.

Heifers sold equally as well, topping at £1180 for a pen of 7 Angus’ from Redmayne Bros. Blue heifers 22-23month sold to £1160 from M Shephard & Sons and JS & KM Wilson & Son. Younger cattle sold well with suckler bred Limousin bullocks from T Ayrton & Son selling to £770 and a pen of nice 14month Charollais heifers selling to £700 from A & CM Carter, Black Bull Farm. A top gross of £1174 from MJ Fell, Newton with a Friesian Heifer. Frisians sold to a top of 174.5ppk for a heifer from EE Thornton & Sons. Friesian cows sold to 114.5ppk from G Atkinson & Son, Quernmore Park. Overall average of 94.17ppk for all OTMs forward. A bumper entry of Calves and Stirks this morning with 77 going under the hammer. This sale is fast growing momentum, drawing both quantity and quality calves. A 100% clearance across all sectors was topped by Steven Robinson, Longber Farm with a run of British Blue bulls and heifers selling to £445 heifers sold to £335 from the same good home, buyers paying a premium for the cow making heifers. Three of the 13 blue bulls forward sold in excess of £400. Limousin bulls sold to a top of £395 from David Townley, Whinney Carr, with the same home selling Lim heifers to £392. Native bred calves sold well, with Angus Heifers & Bulls selling to £290 from RT Halhead and David & Eileen Wallbank. Very few black and whites forward topping at £130, twice, from TD & V Whitaker, Park Lane and FW Rhodes & Son, Barrow Graves. Stirks were forward in plentiful numbers, and met by a strong trade, selling to a top of £515 for a pair of Angus Heifers from A Tattersall, Withnell. Trade of the day came from Steve Moore with a pen of Hereford Bullocks selling to £505 at 6month.

Continental and White faced lambs carrying plenty of flesh sold to a strong demand with better sorts easily sold into the 190ppk with plenty of pens in the mid to late 180ppk. Lambs topped at 198ppk or £89 from Joe Townley of Mearsbeck. Mule lambs sold to a top of 174ppk from Michael Preece of High House Farm with all mule lambs averaging 171ppk. A few horn lambs now beginning to come forward selling to 171ppk from BD Gill of Yarlsber.

Horned ewes sold to £54 for meaty ewes with plainer sorts around the £40 mark.

Couple of Clean Cattle forward selling to 174.5ppk for Simmental heifers from P & A Bell of Village Farm.

A fantastic British Blue bull Calf from ML & SM Dobson of Espford Farm selling at 7 week old to £485 took the headlines at J36. All calves sold to a sharp trade with a ring side of buyers eager to purchase calves on offer with more could have easily been sold. Beef bull calves sold to a strong demand with all calves selling to their value with better heifer calves good to sell as plainer sorts slightly harder to place. Rearing black and whites once again selling well in line with other markets in the North West topping at £170 once again from ML & SM Dobson of Espford Farm with other young black and white rearing calves selling between £60 and £80.

Largest Entry of Store Lambs at J36 Rural Auction Centre sell to £74.50

North West Auctions held its weekly store lamb sale which saw an entry of 3,071 forward with buyers in attendance from as far afield as Shropshire and Devon.

A top price of £74.50 was achieved for a pen of 25 Texel x from DR & C Galbraith, Grayrigg. Plenty of short keep lambs £65 - £70. Medium keep lambs regularly £61 - £64 peaking at £64.50 for Suffolk x from MA & JA Winn, Burneside.

Hill lambs sold to £66.50 for Cheviot x from RI Dixon. Rough Fells to £55, Swaledales to £52, Scotch Blackface to £49. Mules regularly £60+ topping at £65 for a pen of £43 from Messrs Hodgson, Rydal. Herdwicks sold to £46 and Mashams to £63.50.

Best store pigs achieved £95 with others £68 - £80. Weaners presented in greater numbers with buyers selective as to breed and quality as the winter months draw in. Best white weaners £25, others £20 with most generally £8 - £15.

North West Auctions held their weekly sale of prime stock at J36 where a huge show of 3,600 prime sheep were put before a full compliment of buyers. Lambs topped at £104 per head for a single Beltex lamb from Messrs Jennings of Selside purchased by Mr M Lomax. Vendors should be complimented for a great show of lambs. All classes were well bid for throughout the sale to leave an overall average of 177.85p/kg.

The best Prime Lambs were regularly over the £2 per kilo mark topping at 211.40p/kg for a pen of Beltex x lambs from Richard Prickett of Hutton Roof. First cross commercial Suffolk and Texel lambs 180-190p/kg and once again another great show of well finished Mule and Masham lambs forward with Mashams topping at £79 per head and Mules selling to £82 per head. Horned lambs sold to £70.50 for a great pen of Rough Fell lambs from GH Capstick & Sons of Birkhaw.
