Judging was in the capable hands of young breeder Aaron Troughton from Firbank, who awarded the championship rosette to a Shearling from William Dawson, Sedbergh, which was scanned carrying twins. The judge later backed his deci- sion and purchased the sheep for a final bid of 500gns. The reserve champion, a Shearling from S Hoggarth & R Capstick, Howgill, scanned carrying twins also achieved a final bid of 500gns selling to Miss Amy Harrison, Kentmere. The sale topped at 600gns for the first prize In-lamb Ewe from E & K Bland, Tebay. This 1 crop Ewe was scanned with twins, and sold to K Milburn, Sedbergh. 10 In-lamb Rough Fell sheep sold in excess of 200gns. ROUGH FELLS SELL TO 600GNS AT IN-LAMB SALE WITH OVER £1000 RAISED FOR CHARITY BY THE ROUGH FELL SHEEP BREEDERS ASSOCIATION

The annual show and sale of Rough Fell in-lamb sheep attracted a large crowd of buyers from throughout the UK, from as far afield as Wales, Ireland and the Midlands. Judging was in the capable hands of young breeder Aaron Troughton from Firbank, who awarded the championship rosette to a Shearling from William Dawson, Sedbergh, which was scanned carrying twins. The judge later backed his deci-sion and purchased the sheep for a final bid of 500gns. The reserve champion, a Shearling from S Hoggarth & R Capstick, Howgill, scanned carrying twins also achieved a final bid of 500gns selling to Miss Amy Harrison, Kentmere.

The sale topped at 600gns for the first prize In-lamb Ewe from E & K Bland, Tebay. This 1 crop Ewe was scanned with twins, and sold to K Milburn, Sedbergh. 10 In-lamb Rough Fell sheep sold in excess of 200gns.

The flock reduction on behalf of George & Kath Robinson saw a top price of 240gns, achieved for In-lamb Shearlings, and older Ewes selling to 220gns. Several consignments of groups of In-lamb sheep sold to keen interest, with 3 Ewes from G & K Robinson selling for 150gns, with others 125gns from A Mackie, Howgill, selling a pen of 5 In-lamb Ewes. Just one entry of grouped Shearlings sold to 105gns all carrying singles from T,L,B & J Knowles.

The Store Cattle trade saw cattle within specification sell to a good trade but cattle out of specification either over fat or stunted harder to sell as seen throughout many markets. Lancaster continues to be the place to sell Native cattle with buyers around the ring all ages. Short term bullocks sold to £1270 for Angus’s from W & A Cardwell and R Escolme. Heifers sold to £1170 for a Limousin from M & L Preece of High House Farm. Black and White bullocks were a noticeably sharper trade with a few fresh faces back around the ring. The weekly sale of Cast Cows had a strong trade for an entry of well fleshed cows forward today. Over 80% of the 99 cows and OTM cattle forward today were Dairy cows with an overall market average of 104ppk. Beef cows sold to a top of 134.5ppk from JA Knipe of Todds farm for Simmental. Best types of black and whites sold around 120ppk topping 124.5ppk with all black and whites forward averaging 100ppk. The opening sale of Stirks for 2016 saw a busy ringside of buyers competing for all classes. The entry of 96 calves and stirks topped at £690 for a pair of 8-9m Hereford bullocks from Malcolm Lund, Ingleton. A pair of Charolais bullocks closely followed, realising £680 from JS Tay-lor, Scotforth. Blue heifers sold to £650 from A Shepherd with younger sorts to £585 for a trio. Blue bullocks sold to £565. Montbelliardes to £510 from F Carr, Arkholme. Black and white bulls sold to a fast trade, topping at £332, for a trio of 5month olds, from Amelia Threlfall, Grim-sargh. Younger sorts sold to £240 at 4months from Phillip Wood, Scotforth.

A shortage of Calves forward topped at £310 for an Angus Bull from TD & V Whitaker, Winmarleigh. Continental calves to £265 for Blue Bulls and £245 for Blue heifers, both from Phillip Wood. Best sorts of Black and white calves over £100, topping at £120 from Maurice Cap-stick. Best rearers £70-£95 with younger calves a touch less. Monday 1st February The weekly sale of Prime Hoggs had a stronger trade then previous week as the market averaged 180ppk. In spec hoggs weighing between 39kg – 45kg have averaged 185ppk. As seen over previous weeks well finished fed hoggs easiest sold and in strongest demand. A consignment of good quality Charollais hoggs from P Lawrenson of Walmsley Fold sold to £92.50 with plenty of pens of hogs from the same home selling around the £90. In general continental hoggs easily selling £40 above their weight. Mule hoggs between 43kg and 48kg easily as good to sell at £86 or 191ppk from J Bargh & Son of North Farm with all Mules forward averaging 177ppk. A larger entry of Horned hoggs in the market saw well fed Scotch Black face hoggs sell to £79.50 or 194ppk from WM Pye of Tarnwater with Swaledales selling to £78 from WI & AM Atkinson & Son of Holme House. More prime hoggs required each week at Lancaster to meet the demands of buyers. Mules to £74 again from Chris Jackson, to average £61.67. Horned sheep topped at £58 for a pen of Dalesbreds from FK & F Woodhouse, Scorton. Overall average of £57 for all forward. The dispersal sale of Pedigree and Pure Beltex In-lamb sheep on behalf of V & G Edgar, Ayside, saw a top price of 350gns for a Shearling scanned carrying twins, other Shearlings achieving 300gns, 280gns. Older flock Ewes sold to 370gns for a Beltex Ewe carrying twins and 300gns for a black Beltex Ewe scanned carrying triplets. A small entry of Charollais Ewes sold to 220gns for a Ewe carrying twins with Gimmer Hoggs peaking at 180gns. Beltex x Ewes sold to 200gns, with others at 180gns. Commercial In-lamb sheep attracted keen interest, with purchasers keen to secure replacement stock. Younger Mule Ewes and Shearlings sold to £140 carrying twins from P Whitton, Burneside, with others regularly £115 - £132. Flock aged Ewes £90 - £102. Continental Ewes sold to £105 carrying twins with others £98, £92.

BLUEFACED LEICESTERS SELL TO 1800GNS

The Annual show & Sale of Bluefaced Leicester Females had a strong trade throughout with vendors leaving well satisfied with their trade and it was good to have so many regular plus new purchasers ringside from far and wide including interest from Ireland. The pre-sale show was judged by Matthew Atkinson of Selside. The In-lamb Class saw a strong line-up of sheep with the first prize rosette being awarded to AR Edmondson of Hawkswell with a gimmer shearling sired by Hundith B004 “X Factor.” A very stylish line-up of gimmer hoggs saw the first prize rosette being awarded to Messrs Lord of West Dowgill with a G049 sired gimmer hogg which went onto take the championship. The sale topped at 1800gns for a modern stylish gimmer hogg from Messrs Lord of West Dowgill sired by the £8,000 G023 Marriforth selling to Tom Willoughby of Leyburn. The Champion from the same good home sold for 1,550gns. In-lamb ewes and shearlings were easily sold and met plenty of interest topping at 1050gns for a gimmer shearling carrying triplets from AR Edmondson of Hawkswell. Gimmer hoggs sold to an average of £952 and in-lamb ewes and shearlings averaged £701.

The weekly sale of Calves had an entry of forty forward selling to a better trade then expected especially hearing reports from other local centres this week. Well grown and strong calves of all breeds were eagerly bid for with buyers slightly cautious of buying young calves. Strong beef calves around the £300 mark at six weeks old topping at £335 and £315 from JW & TE Sharpe of Flodder Hall for British Blue Bulls with heifers from the same good home selling to £290. Native calves saw well grown Hereford bulls selling to £295 RJ & KR Wilkinson of High Foulshaw Farm. Good thriving beef calves selling in the mid two hundreds. Fleckvieh bull calves sold to £195 from RG & J Clark of Far Audlands. Black and whites mainly young types again saw better sorts selling between £60 and £80. Mules/Mashams sold to a top of £63 with others £55 - £60. Hill lambs achieved £59. Medium keep lambs generally £52 - £62 with smallest sorts £40 - £48. The weekly sale of Prime Hoggs saw a top price of £97 achieved on 2 occasions, for Beltex x lambs from SA Hill, Lancaster and J C Walling & Son, Crosthwaite.
