History of the Program
The NVC/KPNC MESA Medical Scholars Program (MSP) is a comprehensive partnership between the Napa Valley College MESA program and Kaiser Permanente Northern California (KPNC).
Timeline:
Spring 2015 – Prompted by Dr. Gonzalez’ interest in working with a local community collegein developing a program aimed at closing the gap for under-represented students pursuing acareer in medicine.
Fall 2015 – Seven Napa Valley College MESA/STEM Students participated in the first pilot externship with Kaiser. This led to the development of what is now the Leadership Forum portion of the Medical Scholar Program.
Fall 2015 thru Spring 2019 – The pilot Medical Scholar Program served a total of 4 cohorts (39 students).
Spring 2019 – NVC MESA and Kaiser Permanente Northern California drafted an MOU, which was finalized and then approved by the NVC Board of Trustees.
Fall 2019 – The one year externship developed into a three-year Medical Scholars Program. The 10 NVC MESA students in the second year of the program will partake in the Leadership Forum and receive a combined $10,000 stipend from Kaiser.

Premedical Educational Pipeline
Stigma of Community College
• After controlling for academic metrics, 31% of students who started at a
community college prior to transferring to a four-year University were accepted
to medical school compared to 50% of students who started at a four-year
University.
• Sagui proposed possible reasons:
• Limited premedical opportunities at non-research institutions:
Community college students are less likely to have research and
extracurricular experiences that admissions committees favor.
• Socioeconomic status related challenges.
• Perception that Community College students are not as academically
prepared.
A. Saguil and A.L. Kellerman, The Community College Pathway to Medical School:
A Road Less Traveled, Academic Medicine, Vol. 89, No. 12 / December 2014,
Addressing the Problem:
A Tailored Approach is Needed
Problem:
Racial/ethnic minorities are under-represented in medical schools
• Primary Program Goal:
• To increase the number of students from underserved and minority
backgrounds who successfully matriculate into a STEM major at a
four-year university
• Target Population:
Students who currently attend a community college that serves a large
proportion of racial/ethnic minorities
• Theoretical Goal:
• An increase in racial/ethnic minorities in STEM majors will prepare a
larger proportion of these under-represented populations for medical school
admissions

Goal: To develop pre-medical community college students into leaders with the

Kaisers’ Role in Evaluating the Effectiveness of MSP
• The Graduate Medical Education (GME) Research Project Manager
will train the CM & GH Fellow in program evaluation and analysis
• The CM & GH Fellow will track the success of the program
• Survey the trainees on their community project activities
• Create a report of objectives met and missed
• Suggest improvements for the next year to be passed on to the next fellow
• Present findings to local fellowship program before the end of their
fellowship (Early Summer)

MESA and Counseling’s Role for a Successful Outcome of MSP
The successful outcome of the KP
Medical Scholars Program is based
on the utilization of resources among
KP Faculty, SME Faculty and the
MESA Team.
The MSP Student will develop
leadership, self-confidence, self-
efficacy, transfer readiness to engage
in opportunities related to pre-health
careers.
The single most important feature of
a successful program is for students

relationship with a mentor/
counselor/coordinator that monitors
the students’ progress.

Stories of Success
Alexis Delgadillo
BS Cognitive Science, University of California, Davis
NVC MESA, DOCC and KPMSP Alumnus
Testimonial:
I am a First generation college student and the youngest of three siblings raised by
Mexican immigrants. I began pursuing my career of medicine after my daughter
was born. I was 20-years-old and knew I had one of two options: use my brain or
my body. I now find myself less than one year from submitting my medical school
application and achieving my dream.
Through MESA and KPMSP I was able to network and find mentors to coach
me through application, obtain valuable Letters of Recommendations and
research experiences– learned how to collectively work together to accomplish a
meaningful project.
I consider myself a much more competitive and well rounded student. MESA and
KP were the first resources that placed me on my path toward achieving my
academic goal. Prior to MESA and KPMSP I didn't have guidance, direction or a
clear vision of who I could become or what I could achieve. Since then, I have had
high academic success and want to pass on the knowledge and resources that were
given to me through MSP and the MESA Program.
I’m currently studying for the MCAT to apply for medical school.
Former member of DOCC Premed Club,
DeepTok Peer to Peer Mentor and
participated in the UC Davis, PREP
Medico and Touro University (research
labs).
Stories of Success
Selene Solorio-GonzalezNVC MESA, DOCC and KPMSP
Testimonial: MESA and Kaiser Permanente Medical Scholars Program (KPMSP) has helped me in many ways, such as becoming a better leader, working with the community, improving communication skills with my peers, and allowing to network, network and do more networking! Last semester, our MSP Leadership Focus Group worked with the homeless community to find more effective ways to improve the well being of the homeless community.
My experience so far has been eye-opening, seeing health care in practice and interacting with M.D.s has made me want to continue my medical journey. I’m the current DOCC Dreamers Of Community Change (DOCC) Premed Club President. DOCC helps build leadership skills, networking opportunities, community engagement, and for scholarship opportunities. This club was created to help pre-med and pre-health students continue their career goal through a community of support.
I’m in my second year at NVC, transfer plans for fall 2021 and pursuing a double major in Biology and Spanish.
Upon graduation, I will apply to medical school.
Selene is the DOCC President 2018-present and participated in the KPMSP Leadership Forum 2018-2019.
Mission:
The goal of DOCC is to help beginning
