Introduction1

TheGraduateEducationexperienceismuchdifferentfromtheundergraduatelifestyleandeducationalexperiencewithwhichyouarelikelyfamiliar.Themostobviousdifferencesarethatitismuchlessstructured,thateachgraduatestudent’sprogramisunique,andthatitismuchmorefocusedonasingletopicorasmallclusterofcloselyrelatedtopics.

Usuallythefirsttwosemestersarespentmainlyintakingcourseswiththeremainderofthetimespentinfindingamentorandstartingaresearchproject.

CourseworkUndergraduateeducationprimarilyfocusesoncourseworkandperformanceinthestudent’sclasses,laboratorycourses,etc.Insomeundergraduateprograms,aseniorthesisorequivalentmaybeasmallpartoftheoverallrequirements.Withinamajor,manystudentswilltakethesamecoursesandhaveaverysimilareducationalexperience.Graduateeducationfocusesonresearchandthestudent’sindividualproject.Thestudent’sprojectisoftenapartofamuchlargerprojectwithotherstudentsandoneormorefacultyandstaffinvolved.Therearecoursesthatformacommoncoreforallstudentsinourgraduateprogram,includingclassesfromoutsideNutritionalSciences,designedtoassistyouwiththeresearchtobeperformed.Typicalundergraduateprogramsexpectacourseloadof15ormorecredithourspersemesterandatotalof120-140credithoursinthedegree. Requiredcoursesmeetbothbroadeducationalobjectivesaswellas30-50inthestudent’smajor.Graduatestudentstypicallycarryaloadof9hourspersemesterinadegreeprogramthattypicallyrequires30(M.S.)–90(Ph.D.)credithoursofcoursework,muchofwhichisdevotedtoresearchcredithours. Theexpectationsofinstructorsofgraduatelevelcoursesarehigherthantheexpectationsofinstructorsforundergraduatecourses.Somestudentsfindthattheirundergraduatecoursesrequiredonlyasmallamountoftimeoutsidetheclassroom.Mostgraduatestudentsfindthattheymustspendatleastoneormorehoursofstudyforeachhourspentinclass.Itisverycommonthatthereisnotextbookforgraduatecourses.Coursestypicallydependonavarietyofoutsidesources,especiallyarticleswritteninthescientificjournals.Studentsareexpectedtosupplementtheirclassworkwithsupplementalreadingsinareasinwhichthestudentfeelsunprepared,i.e.astudentmayfindthats/heneedsabetterunderstandingofphysiologyoranatomyinordertodowellinagivencourse.TheM.S.andPh.D.inNutritionalSciencesspecifythecoursesthatallstudentsmusttake(seepages30and34inthisHandbook).Astudent’sfacultysupervisor(mentor)and/orsupervisorycommitteewillnormallyadvisethestudentonwhichadditionalcoursesshouldbetaken.Thestudent’sacademicrecordfrompreviouscourseworkandthestudent’sresearchprojectwilldictatesomeofthecourserequirements.Thefacultyexpectsallstudentstoperformatahighlevelintheircoursework.Whilegradesinclassesarecertainlyimportant,thefacultyisparticularlyinterestedinwhatyoulearnandwhatyouareabletodowithwhatyouhavelearned.

ResearchTheUniversityofTexasatAustinisatop-tierresearchinstitution.ThatmeansthatUT-Austinisamongtheeliteresearchcentersintheworld.Assuch,itsfacultyandgraduateprogramsareresearchintensive.Asastudenthere,yourresearchwillbeyournumberonepriorityandwilldeterminehowwellyoudointheprogram. Thesoonerastudentfindsaresearchprojectandgetsunderway,thesoonerthestudentwillfinishher/hisdegree.Researchisintendedtoproducenewknowledge.Scientistsfindthatanyattempttouncoverandanswerortosolveaparticularprobleminvariablyleadstonewquestionsandnewproblems.Probablythethreemostimportantcharacteristicsofagoodscientistarecuriosity,perseverance,andcarefulobservation.Oneofthegoalsofthefacultyistoinstillorenhancethesequalitiesinourstudents.Moststudentsentergraduateschoolwithonlyageneralidea,ifany,ofthetypeofresearchonwhichtheywanttowork. Usually,astudenthasfoundasupervisorinthefirstyearandfinishedcourseworkbytheendofthesecondyear,andhasstartedonaresearchproject.Attendinglectureclassesandseminarsgivesstructuretoastudent’slifewithdefinitemilestonessuchasexams,presentations,andpapers.Theresearchprojecthasfew,ifany,builtinmilestones.Theresearchermustdecidewhatdefinestheprojectandwhatmilestonesareneededtocompletethedifferentphasesoftheproject.Mostgraduatestudentprojectsareapartofthementor’songoingresearchprogramandmaybeincollaborationwithotherstudentsworkingondifferentpiecesoftheoverallproject.Sometimestheprojectisbasedentirelyonthestudent’sideabutmoretypicallyitisaresearchprojectbasedonthementor’sideas.Beingagoodscientistrequiresmorethanjustcomingupwithgoodideas.Tobesuccessful,thescientistmustspendtimereadingpapers,discussingideaswithcolleaguesandstudents,findingtheresourcestocarryouttheresearch,writingupandpresentingtheresultsoftheresearch,etc.Allofthismeansthatbeingaresearchfacultymemberandbeingagraduatestudentisverymuchafull-timejobandmore.Thismeansthatyouareresponsibleforhowmuchprogressyoumakeandhowquickly.Manyprojectsrequiresomeworktobecarriedouteveryday,weekendsandholidaysincluded,e.g.animals/cells/humansubjectsoftenrequireattentioneverydayduringanexperiment.Alargepartofgraduateeducationisdesignedtofosterindependentresponsibility.Mostmentorswillnotcloselymonitorwhenastudentisinthelaborworkingontheprojectunlesstheworkisnotgettingdone.Thefacultyexpectsthatstudentswilltakeresponsibilityfortheirownprojectsandworkdiligentlytocarrythemout.Thisisnotlimitedtotheactuallabworkbutalsoincludesreadingpaperstobecomefamiliarwiththefieldandtostaycurrent. Inthebeginning,itistypicalforastudenttospendhalfofher/histimereadingtheresearchliterature. Itiseasytobecomeoverwhelmed.Thestudentmustlearntobeselectiveinreading.Seekoutadvicefromfellowstudents,yourmentor,otherfaculty,etc.Readingresearchpapersisdifferentfromreadingabook.Gotothewebsitebelowforgoodadviceonreadingscientificpapers.

Discussitwithfellowstudents,especiallythosewhoarenearlyfinished.Discussitwithyourmentor. Besuretoincludesometimeinyourscheduleforthingsawayfromtheproject,i.e.sometimeforfun.Setrealisticgoalsforyourself.Divideupyourworkintomanageableunits. Mostpeoplefindthatitiseasiertoaccomplishaseriesofsmallgoalsratherthantyingtoachieveonebiggoalasaunit.Yougettothesamepointattheendbutthelatterismoredifficultformostofus. Ifneeded,increasethefrequencyofmeetingswithyoursupervisororothermembersofyoursupervisingcommittee.Keepinmindthatthefacultywantsforyoutofinishyourdegreeasbadly,oralmostasbadly,asyoudo. Wewanteachstudenttosucceed,otherwisewewouldbeworkingataresearchinstituteratherthanauniversity.

DepartmentalSeminarsandRoundtableLunches

TheDepartmentofNutritionalSciencessponsorsaweeklyseminarseries,whichfeaturesstudentspeakersaswellasinvitedguestscientistsofnationalandinternationalreputationtopresenttheirresearchfindings.BecausetheseriescoversadiverserangeofresearchtopicsinthebroadlydefinedareaofNutrition,itisofgreatvaluetothestudent’sacademicdevelopment.EachseminarisprecededbyaRoundtableLunch,whichaffordsthestudentanopportunitytointeractwiththeesteemedguestinaninformalsetting,todiscussscience,graduateeducation,and/orcareerplanning.StudentattendanceatDepartmentalSeminarsisREQUIREDandattendanceischeckedatallseminarevents(visitingspeakersandstudentspeakers). Studentsmustsignineachlecturetoconfirmattendance.Allstudentsareinvitedtoattendroundtableluncheseachweek.

Thesis/Dissertation

Step1–FindaMentorIdeally,duringtheprocessofgettingyourselfadmittedtotheprogram,youhaveidentifiedtwoorthreepotentialmentorsbasedonyourresearchinterestandtheirs. Earlyinyourfirstsemester,orevenbeforeschoolbegins,makeanappointmenttovisitwitheachofthefacultymemberswhoyoufeelarelikelymentorsforyou. Discussyourresearchinterests,yourlong-termcareergoals,andseeifthereisaplaceforyouinthefacultymember’sresearchgroup.Also,talkwithothergraduatestudentstodeterminewhattheirexperienceswiththeirmentorshasbeen.Topicsthatyoushouldbesuretodiscusswithapotentialmentorinclude:Isthereaprojectformeinyourgroup?

Howlongdoyourstudentsusuallytaketograduate?

Willfinancialsupportbeavailableforme?

Whatareyourexpectationsofme?

Howoftenwillwemeet?

Whatbackgroundskillsdoyouexpectmetohave?Whowilltrainmeinthetechniquesneededintheresearchproject?

Itisexpectedthatallincomingstudentswilldo1to2labrotations. Arrangetoconductalaboratoryrotation(usuallyalengthofonelongsemester)inthepotentialmentors’laboratories.Bythecompletionofyoursecondlongsemester,youshouldhaveamentorthathasagreedtoserveasyourthesis/dissertationsupervisor.Youmustidentifyamentorbeforethestartofyourthirdlongsemesterorfacedismissalfromtheprogram.

Step2–SelectionofCommitteeSupervisoryCommitteesarecomposedofthreeormoremembersoftheGraduateFaculty,includingyourResearchSupervisor(mentor).ThesupervisorandatleasttwootherfacultymembersmustbefromtheGraduateStudiesCommittee(GSC)forNutritionalSciences.AtleastonemembermustbefromoutsidetheGSCforNutritionalScience.Youshouldselectfacultymemberswhocanbringimportantadvicetoyouinareasrelatedtoyourproject.Inadditiontoresearch,thesupervisorinconjunction

withtheSupervisoryCommitteeapprovesthestudent’scourses.TheSupervisoryCommitteemustbesetupbythefinaldayofthefourthlongsemester. UnlessanexceptionisgrantedbytheGraduateAdvisororGSC,failuretoformtheSupervisoryCommitteebythisdatewillresultindismissalfromtheprogram.ItisexpectedthatthestudentwillmeetwiththeSupervisoryCommitteeatleastonceayear.ThisCommitteeperformstheannualreview

ofprogress(dueSeptember15thofeachyear)andsubmitsareportaddressingwhetherornotthestudentismakingsatisfactoryprogresstowarddegreetotheGSCviatheGraduateAdviser.Thiscommittee,withtheapprovaloftheGraduateAdviser,isthecommitteethatadministersthePreliminaryExam(presentationanddefenseofadissertationresearchproposalandsatisfactoryresponsetoquestionsonnutritionandrelatedsciences)inconnectionwithmeetingrequirementsforadmissiontocandidacy.

Step3–FindaThesis/DissertationTopicThisverylikelygotaccomplishedunderStep1.Agoodresearchtopicshouldbeonethatinterestsyouandyourmentor. Yourmentormayhaveawell-definedlong-termresearchprogramandexpectthatmembersoftheresearchgroupcontributetothateffort.Otherfacultymembershavealooserfocusbutworkonprojectsthatarecloselyrelatedtoaresearcharea.Afewfacultymemberswilltakeonanystudentwithaninterestingidea. Theabilityofthementortoprovidetechnicalsupporttoyouisgreatestinthefirstexampleandleastinthelastexample.Ifyouchooseatopicthatisoflittleornointeresttoyou,youwillfinditdifficulttoremainfocusedandtoproceedtocompletion.Allresearchprojectsrequireasubstantialamountofroutineandrepetitivework. Somepartsarefun,othersarenot,buttheprojectmustbecarriedtocompletion.Inordertofinishyourdegreeatornearyourexpectedgraduationdate,youmustclearlydefinetheresearchproblemyouwishtoaddress. Questionstoconsiderinclude:Isthistopicwithinanareaofcurrentresearchintheliterature?Haveyou

clearlydefinedtheresearchproblem(s)tobeaddressed?

Is/aretheproblem(s)one(s)thatcanrealisticallybeaddressedinafewyearsofwork?Areyouandyourmentorinagreementonthescopeoftheprojectanditsprojectedtimetable?Isthistopic

importantenoughthattheresultswillbepublishable?

Step4–ThePreliminaryExaminationAssoonasthetopicisclearlydefinedbyyouandyourmentor,youwillneedtoprepareforyourPreliminaryExamination,whichmustbecompletedpriortothestartofthesixthfullsemester.ThestudentcannotregisterforthesixthlongsemesterwithoutcompletionofthePrelim.Ifthestudentcannotmeetthedeadlinetosuccessfullypassthepreliminaryexam,anextensionofthisdeadlinemustberequestedfromtheResearchSupervisorinwriting,includingboththereasonthatthestudentisnotreadyaswellasaspecificallyoutlinedplanastowhenthestudentwillbereadytotakethepreliminaryexam;thatthisapprovalisnotautomaticandmustbeapprovedbytheGSC.TheobjectivesofthePreliminaryExaminationaretoevaluatethestudent'sunderstandingofandabilitytointegratenutritionalscienceprinciples,andtoevaluatetheresearchpotentialofthestudent,aswellastoevaluateastudent'sprogresstowardsbecomingascientist.Theexaminationwillconsistofanoral(verbal)examinationphase,followedbyapresentationofthewrittenresearchproposal.Theoralcomponentwillconsistofquestionsfromthecommittee

todetermineyourknowledgeofthefieldofnutritionandespeciallythoseareasrelatedtoyourtopic.1Thewrittenresearchproposalwillbeusedtomeasureyourindependentthinkingandwritingabilities,andshouldbeofnomorethan10pages(referencesexcluded)followingtheNIHpredoctoralNRSA(PHS416)guidelinesonpage49ofthisHandbook.Thus,significantandspecifichelpfromfacultyandpeersshouldberestricted.Thefinalproposalmustbeanindependentproductofthestudent.ThewrittenresearchproposalwillbesubmittedtotheResearchSupervisorandtheSupervisoryCommittee4weekspriortothepotentialprelimdate.Theywillreviewtheproposalinatimelymanner.Ifthewrittenproposalisjudgedsatisfactory,youwillthencoordinatewithyourSupervisoryCommitteetoscheduleadateforyourpresentationandexamination.

Iftheproposalisdeemedinsufficientorunsatisfactory,thestudentshouldmeetwitheachcommitteememberforfeedbacktofacilitateediting/rewriting.Therevisedproposalwillbere-submittedwithallduehasteonadateestablishedbythecommitteeforre-evaluation.ThePreliminaryExaminationcannotbescheduleduntilthewrittenproposalisapprovedbythecommittee.Ingeneral,thelineofquestioningduringtheoralexaminationphasewillbederivedfromthesubjectmatterofthewrittenresearchproposal,butthequestionsmaybebroadinscope,toallowthecommitteetoevaluatefullyyourknowledgeofbasicnutritionalscienceprinciples.Duringtheexamination,itislikelythatyourcommitteewill“tweak”yourproject,i.e.theywilloffersuggestionsofwaystoimprovetheprojectinscopeandtoincreaseyourlikelihoodofsuccess.Theexaminationphasewillbefollowedimmediatelybyaclosedevaluationphase,duringwhichthesupervisorycommitteewilldiscussandevaluateyourperformance.FormatoftheResearchProposal:TheformatoftheproposalshouldfollowtheformatofatypicalNIHpredoctoralNRSA(PHS416).Thatis,itshouldcontainfoursections,undertheheadings:1)SpecificAims,2)BackgroundandSignificance,3)ResearchDesignandMethods,and4)LiteratureCited.Thefirstthreesections(1-3)oftheproposalmustnotexceed10pagesinlength,single-spaced,usingafontsizeof11pointorlarger.Anyproposalthatdoesnotadheretothesestandardswillnotbeaccepted.Althoughtherearefourrequiredmajorsectionsintheproposal,youarestronglyencouragedtousesub-headings,whereappropriate,toincreasereadability.Pass/FailandConditionalPass:YouwillpassthePreliminaryExaminationifallsupervisorycommitteemembersassent.Passing,conditionalpass,orfailinggradeswillbeassigned,asdeterminedbythecommittee. Ifdeemednecessary,thecommitteemayrequireyoutotakeadditionalclasses,orotherwiseaddressweaknessesthatareidentifiedduringtheexamination(i.e.conditionalpass).StudentswhosuccessfullycompletethePreliminaryExaminationmayproceedtothedissertationphaseoftheprogramandareeligibletobeacceptedforcandidacy.IfyoufailthePreliminaryExaminationyoumaypetitiontheGSCtoallowachangetotheMastersProgram.1Thegeneralknowledge(competencies)innutritionwillbeprovidedtoeachstudent.

Step5–ConductingtheResearchTherealworknowbegins.Researchislaborintensive.Agoodscientistmustbeconsistent,careful,andthoughtful.Agoodscientistmustbeher/hisownstrongestcritic.Researchprojectsrarelyproceedwithoutsetbacks.Carefulplanningandattentiontodetailscanminimizesetbacks.Researchprojectsoftengivesurprising,unexpectedresults.Theoryismerelythat,itisnotfactuntilprovenso.Researchtechniquesmustbemastered.Thatmeansthatyoumustnotonlycarryoutthetaskswellbutyoumustalsounderstandwhyyouaredoingeachofthesteps.Ifthingsgowrong,youshouldbeablequicklytoidentifytheproblemstep,ifyoufullyunderstandwhatyouaredoingandwhy.Dependingonthenatureoftheproject,itisnotuncommontospendsixtyormorehoursperweekworkingonit.Youshouldbethinkingaboutyourproject,readingpertinentliterature,anddoingtheworkoftheprojectalmostallofyourtime.Rememberthatthisisyourproject.Takechargeofseeingittocompletion. Graduateeducationisdesignedtodevelopindependent,self-motivatedscientists.

Step6–AnnualProgressReport-DueSeptember15eachyearGraduateStudiesCommittees(GSC)areresponsibleforevaluatingthestudentsintheirprogramstoensuretheyaremakingsatisfactoryprogresstowardtheirdegrees. IftheGSCfindsthatastudentisnotmakingsatisfactoryprogress,itmayrecommendtotheDeanofGraduateStudiesthatthestudent’sprogrambeterminated.TheNutritionalSciencesGraduateStudiesCommitteereviewsstudentprogressannuallybasedonthesubmittedannualreportmaterials. ReportsaredueSept.15eachyear.AllstudentsneedtosubmitthefollowingfortheirStudentProgressReport:1. Aresume/curriculumvitae(seeAppendix).Keepthisup-to-date,formsthebasisoftheannualreport.2. TAEvaluations-EachsemesterastudentservesasaTeachingAssistanttheyarerequiredtoparticipateintheMeasurementandEvaluationCenter’sCourseInstructorSurveys,whichprovidesfeedbacktotheTAfromtheundergraduatestudents.TheTA’sperformanceisalsoevaluatedbythefacultyinchargeoftheclass.ExampleofCourseInstructorSurveyisavailableathttp://www.utexas.edu/academic/mec/cis/index.html3. ThepurposeofthePh.D.programinNutritionalSciencesistopreparestudentsforresearch,teaching,andadministrativepositionsincolleges,universities,governmentandindustry.Evidenceofsuchpreparationincludesthesubmissionofadissertation,whichshouldbeamajorcontributiontoknowledgeindicatingnotonlythattheindividualhasathoroughknowledgeoftheparticularfieldbutalsothattheindividualcandesignandexecuteoriginalresearch.

Campus-widetherehasbeenincreasedemphasisonresearcherssharinglaboratory/teachingspaceandequipmenttomakemoreefficientuseoftheseresources.Examplesofsharedusearecorefacilitiesandanalyticalequipmentlocatedinaresearcher’slaboratorybutsharedwithothers.Oftenitisnotclearwhoisresponsibleforthesharedspaceorequipment.Whenthisoccursandhazardousorradioactivematerialsareinvolved,safetyandregulatorycomplianceproblemsmayarise.Theseproblemsfrequentlyinvolvecontaminationorwastethatisnotidentifiedorlabeledproperly.Undetectedchemicalorradioactivecontaminationcouldcausepotentiallyharmfulexposurestoothersusingthespaceorequipment,andnotlabelingthesematerialsviolatesseveralfederalandstateregulations.

Forthesereasons,EnvironmentalHealthandSafety(EHS)highlyrecommendsthatacompetentindividual2bedesignatedasthepersonresponsibleformanagingsharedspaceandequipment.Analternateshouldalsobespecifiedsothatmanagementcontinueswhentheprimarydesigneeisabsent.

Thedesigneewilldevelop,implement,andenforcebasicprocedurestocontrolcontaminationandwastes.Adherencetotheproceduresshouldpreventmostcontaminationandwasteproblems;however,ifaproblemoccurs,thepersonresponsibleshallensuretheissueiscorrectedinatimelymanner.WhatfollowsareEHSrecommendedproceduresforthedifferentsharedspaceandequipmentscenarios.

Securableresearchspacerecommendedprocedures

SecurableresearchspaceisresearchrelatedspacewithlockingdoorsusedbymorethanonePrincipalInvestigator(PI)orfacultymember.Examplesofsecurablespaceinclude,butarenotlimitedto,instrumentrooms,coldrooms,warmrooms,anddarkrooms.

Recommendedprocedures:

1. Departments,colleges,orresearchunitsmustdesignateacompetentindividualas

thesinglepoint-of-contactresponsibleforeachsecurableroomwhichisusedinsupportofresearchbutissharedbymorethanonePI.

2. Biological,chemical,orradioactivestockandin-processmaterialsmustbe

properlylabeledandtheroommustbesecuredwhennooneinthesharinggroupisinthearea.
