The firstchapter begins with nutrition basicsand acts as a broad review of key nutri-tion topics including macronutrients, micronutrients, nutritional labeling, nutrition assessment, and nationalnutrition programs.

The text is organized by providingthe student with a general overviewof each stage of life with essential nu-tritional needs followed by a subse-quent chapter on conditions andclinical interventions within that lifestage. The next 18 chapters start

with key nutrition concepts and intro-ductions and then delve right into theexploration of the life stage.

Clinical manifestations, case stu-dies, evidence-based treatment, keyreview points, review questions, andonline resources provide studentswith both a broad and specific view ofnutritional considerations for eachlife stage. In addition, each chapterprovides easy-to-navigate tables, charts, and illustrations that aidstudents’ conceptual understandingof the material. Case studies help en-courage critical thinking and providea valuable framework for in-classgroup work and discussion.

A comprehensive, basic under-standing of nutrition is imperative forstudents who read this text, because itimmediately addresses advanced-levelnutrition topicswith little backgroundinformation. There are substantial dif-ferences between the third and fourtheditions that further aid students’ cri-tical thinking skills about the conceptslearned throughout the text. Thesechanges can be characterized by theimplementation and practical applica-tion of the nutrition care process,
