Being healthy isn’t just about what you eat: Grab a healthy snack and go on a hiking adventure! September is the perfect time to explore the nature beyond your own backyard. Look around to enjoy all of the changing colors! Eat the Rainbow! Did you know that eating colorful fruits and veggies help us stay healthy? The more colorful your plate is, the better! Can you choose the correct color for the vegetables below? Hint: some veggies may come in more than one color! Get enough sleep: Growing kids need 9-11 hours each night, with younger kids needing more Don’t skip breakfast: Starting your day with a healthy meal will give you energy to learn at school. Exercise: Making time to play outside will help your brain recharge after a long day of learning. Drink more water: Not enough water can make you feel tired. Keep water handy to help you stay hydrated! Before you go, remember: Stay hydrated! Pack extra water for your hike. Just because the weather is cooler doesn't mean you can skip the sunscreen. Protect your skin from the sun’s powerful rays! Pack a healthy snack to keep your energy high and your belly full. Want a cool new way to enjoy apples? Try these delicious apple crisps! Visit a local apple orchard nearby to pick the apples yourself. Ingredients needed: 4 apples (Honeycrisp or McIntosh apples are best) 1-2 teaspoons ground cinnamon Directions: 1. Preheat the oven to 200 degrees Fahrenheit. 2. Remove the core from all four apples. This can be tricky, ask an adult for help! 3. Slice the apples into rings about 1/8 of an inch thick. 4. Add sliced apples to large bowl and coat in cinnamon. 5. Spray a cooking sheet and place rings so they don’t overlap. 6. Cook for 2-3 hours or until the rings are dry but still soft. Enjoy!
