As the National League for Nursing’s 2015 Education Summit drew to a close on October 2, the NLN announced the results of its annual elections. Anne R. Bavier, PhD, RN, FAAN, assumed the presidency, the anticipated conclusion to her board service these past two years as president-elect. Dr. Bavier will serve as the League’s president until 2017.

At its annual business meeting, the National League for Nursing also announced that G. Rumay Alexander, EdD, RN, FAAN is the NLN’s new president-elect for atwo-yearterm,effectivelyimmediately.Threenewgovernors-at-large were also elected to the NLN Board of Governors.

“Every other year, I have the pleasure of welcoming a new president and president-elect to lead the NLN, and I consider it a privilege to now congratulate Dr. Anne Bavier and Dr. G. Rumay Alexander, said NLN CEO Beverly Malone, PhD, RN, FAAN. “Among the nation’s pre-eminent leaders in nursing education, Anne brings to the NLN her extraordinary vision, commitment, and record of success. Like any Texan, Ann thinks and acts in a big way. That’s why we know we can count on her game-changing perspective to help guide the League in preparing a diverse, outstanding nursing workforce to advance the health of the nation and the global community.”

In her inaugural address, Dr. Bavier emphasized her commitment to ensuring that nurse educators have access to the best resources, the most current research, the newest techniques, and the encourage-ment needed to create the best teaching-learning environments. She called for nursing educators to expand their mutual horizons through international dialogue and to embrace the power to serve students online as well as through face-to-face exchanges.

“Our dedication to nurse educators, and to the pivotal role they play in human health, distinguishes the National League for Nursing from other organizations,” Dr. Bavier said. “I am deeply honored to lead this

prestigious body, one built upon generations ofleaderswhoseeffortswererelentlessin advancing nursing practice through excellence in nursing education.”

NURSE EDUCATORUPDATEA Comprehensive Non-Pharmacological Approach to Brain Wellness in the Aging PopulationRecentadvancesinneuroimaging, cerebrospinalfluid(CSF)assaysand other biomarkers now provide the ability to detect evidence of Alzheimer’s disease (AD) pathophysiological process in vivo. There is growing evidence that the AD pathophysiological process begins years if not decades before the diagnosis of clinical dementia. The long preclinical phase of AD provides a critical opportunity for potential intervention with disease modifying therapy.1

Existingmedicationshaveminimaleffectsonaddressingsymptomsof thedisease,oftenwithnegativeside-effects.Thereisgrowingevidencethatnon-pharmacological means have the potential of delaying the onset of the disease and of slowing its progression. The goal of Vigorous Mind, Inc., a Massachusetts based company, is to improve the quality of life for the aging population and their families, by engaging and guiding them in a comprehensive approach to brain wellness that includes eight non- pharmacological means. Comprehensive research-based Brain wellness components include:

1) Engagementisbrainstimulatingandbrainfitnessactivities: The brain is capable of generating new neurons and synapses in response to training and learning especially in the hippocampus2 which plays an important role in memory formation. Longitudinal studies have shown that engaging in cognitive activity can reduce the risk of AD by 60%3 and that frequent cognitive activity across the life span has an association with slower late- life cognitive decline.4 Reading, playing board games, playing musical instruments, and dancing were shown to be associated with reduced risk of dementia.5

2) Stress Reduction: Chronic stress can generate long-lasting changes in the hippocampus that contribute to vulnerability to mental illness.6 Music7 and meditation have shown some results in reducing stress.8

3) Depression and Positive Psychology: Late-life depressive symptoms increasetheriskofADtwo-fold.9Toolsofferedbypositivepsychologyhaveshown success in reducing chronic depression drastically and thereby the risk of AD. Reminiscence therapy has also shown promise in ameliorating depression and well-being.10

4) Engagement in Social Activities: Frequent engagement in social activity is associated with a 70% reduction in the rate of global cognitive decline compared with infrequent social activity.11

5) Maintaining a Sense of Purpose in Life: A person with a high score in purpose in life is 2.4 less likely to develop AD than a person with a low score.12

6) Engaging in Physical Activity: Participation in physical activity at old age is associated with remaining independent.13 A high level of muscle strength is associated with a 61% decreased risk of developing AD compared to a low level.14

7) Healthy Nutrition: Adhering to the MIND diet may reduce the risk of developing AD by 53%. Even lower adherence to the diet showed a 35% reduction in the risk of developing AD.15

8) Adequate Sleep: A person with a high sleep fragmentation had a 1.5-fold risk of developing AD compared with a person with a low fragmentation.16

NLN Summit Report by Rebecca Miller, MLN President, MSN, RN

On September 30, 2015 Nina Bakke, Executive Director and Rebecca Miller, MSN, RN and

Board President attended the annual NLN Constituents League meeting representing the Mis-

souri League of Nursing in Las Vegas, Nevada. The attendees of the summit were privileged

to hear a presentation by Peggy Hoffman, CAE about component based organizations like

NLN and MLN where one organization is a part of another. Peggy represented Mariner Man-

agement and Marketing LLC. Based on research about volunteer associations, signs of success for component organizations include member

satisfaction, engagement and sustained growth.

Peggy discussed a continuum of member engagement that moves from consuming to promoting, creating, then serving, and finally governing.

This differs from traditional thinking that when people join an organization they must climb the ladder. Today’s members may come and go

from an organization depending on what is going on in their lives but their participation should be welcome at any level of involvement.

The importance of being a welcoming organization was emphasized as a key factor to engagement. People usually come to an organization with

a” hot button” issue which generally fall into one of three categories including seeking an answer to a question or need, the need of a connec-

tion to a person such as a mentor or employee, or a purpose that people want to get involved in. Engage new members by identifying their hot

button and making the connections they seek. Ask them what we can do for you? Most people these days who get involved with organizations

are not there so much for member services, but for the relationships organizations provide. Organizations should switch their language from a

sales pitch mode to one of inviting potential members to join a community.

Volunteering in today’s vibrant organizations does not mean you have to only serve on a committee and the committee has to do all the work.

Nearly 60% of organizational members today prefer ad hoc volunteering. Identity jobs for members and capitalize on their strengths. Remove

the barriers to volunteering such as failure to ask people to volunteer or not providing enough information about opportunities in general, espe-

cially short term jobs. Drivers for people to volunteer include doing something for one’s profession or an important cause, helping others, gain-

ing new perspectives, or exploring one’s own strengths. An organization with about 1/3 of the members involved is considered very healthy.

Overall we gathered many more specific tips for improving the health of our organization throughout the day. As always we were warmly wel-

comed by NLN leadership. Nina does an excellent job at the summit by taking advantage of the opportunity to discuss the needs of our league

with the NLN. She is making a positive impact for us and others as well. Many of the same issues we have are experienced by other leagues

and NLN welcomes our input and is genuinely concerned with promoting the constituent leagues however they can because as we are a main

avenue for growth for them. Nina and I thank you for the opportunity to attend the meeting again this year and we look forward to serving you.

Legislative Report

The Missouri League for Nursing educates members and others to nursing and health care issues. We take position on issues but not on legis-

lation. We help others find and use their voice rather than define the position they should take. How you use your voice is up to you. Here’s

what’s ahead for nursing and health care issues in 2016:

SB 63-This act establishes the Narcotics Control Act. The Department of Health and Senior Services is required to establish and

maintain a program to monitor the prescribing and dispensing of all Schedule II through Schedule IV controlled substances by all

licensed professionals who prescribe or dispense these substances in Missouri. The provisions of this act shall be subject to

appropriations and also may be funded with federal or private moneys. Act is very similar to HB 130.

SCS/SB 119 - This act modifies provisions of law regarding the Prescription Drug Repository Program.

The act transfers the regulation of the Prescription Drug Repository Program from the Department of Health and Senior Services to the State

Board of Pharmacy. The Board shall contract with a third party to administer the program and shall develop and maintain a

participant registry for the Program. The Board may cooperate with nongovernmental organizations to maintain a web-based list of prescrip-

tions drugs, devices, or supplies that have been donated and the participants from which the donated items may be available.

SB 122 - This act requires the Department of Health and Senior Services to issue a request for proposal and contract with a third party for the

establishment of a health care directives registry for the purpose of providing a place to securely store an advance health care directive online

and to give authorized health care providers immediate access to them. An "advance health care directive" is defined as either a power of at-

torney for health care or a declaration signed by an adult declarant containing the person's direction concerning a health care decision. A

"declaration" shall mean a record such as living will, an intent to donate an anatomical gift under the Uniform Anatomical Gift Act, or a do-

not-resuscitate order. All data and information contained in the registry shall remain confidential and shall be exempt from the Sunshine law.

HB 113-Life-sustaining treatment policies of health care facilities. Bill discusses illegal withhold of life-sustaining treatments,

nutrition, medications, etc.

HB 181-Allows a healthcare provider to disclose patients medical records, payment records, or information contained w/in the records to the

patient’s health care decision maker.
