Welcome!Wearepleasedyou’reinterestedintheAssociateofAppliedScienceDegreeinNursingProgramatWayneCountyCommunityCollegeDistrict(WCCCD).TheBureauofLaborStatisticspredictsthatemploymentinnursingwillgrow19%between2012and2022–fasterthanthe11%averagegrowthforallotheroccupations1.ApplyingtoWCCCDNursingProgramisthefirststeptobeginninganexcitingcareerinthefieldofnursing.Theprogramprovidestheory(didactic)andclinicalhands-onpracticalexperienceincaringforadults,children,andfamiliestoinfluencetheirhealthandwell-being.GraduatesareeligibletocompletetheNationalCouncilLicensureExamforRegisteredNurses(NCLEX-RN)anduponlicensurecanseekentry-levelRNpositionsinhospitals,medicaloffices,long-termcarefacilities,homehealthcare,andothercommunitysettings.

Theprogramisrigorouswithstudentscompletingcoursecompetenciesinavarietyoflearningenvironmentswhichincludesclassroom,clinicalskillslab,highfidelitysimulationlab,andclinicalplacementsinhospitalsandcommunitysettings.Atypicalweekwillincludea3-4hourlecture(s)andlabandclinicalexperiences.Clinicalplacementsvaryfromsixhourstwiceaweekor8-12hoursweeklywhichwillincludedays,evenings,orweekends.Additionally,allclinicalcoursesinvolvea4-6hoursimulationexperience.Attendanceatallcoursesisrequiredforprogramcompletion.TheNursingStudentHandbookcontainsdetailedinformationabouttheprogram(curriculum,policies,andhealthrequirements).StudentscanaccesstheNursingStudentHandbookontheDistrict’swebsiteatwww.wcccd.edu

StudentsinterestedinapplyingtotheNursingProgramshouldmeetwithanAdvisortodiscussprogramapplicationcriteria,reviewtranscripts,andconfirmdeadlinedatesforsubmittingtheapplicationandsupportingdocumentspriortocompletingtheapplication.

AdmissionsStudentswillreturnthecompletedapplicationandsupportingdocumentstoStudentServicesorAdvisorsattheNorthwestCampus.ItisrecommendedthatstudentsmeetwithanAdvisortoconfirmallcriteriahasbeenmetpriortotheapplicationdeadlinedate.AllapplicationsarereviewedbytheCollegeWideAdmissionsCommittee.

TheNursingOfficewillmailletterstoapplicantsapproximately4–6weeksaftertheapplicationdeadlinedatesregardingadmissiondecisions.Admissioniscontingentupontheresultsofthedrugscreen,completedhealthprofileandbackgroundcheck.AnypositivefindingsonHealthProfilewillrequireaddedexplanationbytheHealthcareProvider.StudentmustbeabletoparticipateintheNursingProgramwithoutrestrictions.AnadversebackgroundcheckwillrequireadditionalreviewbytheWCCCDlegaldepartment.

SelectionProcessandRankingSystemTheCollegeWideAdmissionCommitteecomposedofNursingandDistrictstaffwillcarefullyreviewallapplicationsandsupportingdocuments.Thecommitteemeetstwiceeachyear,fallandspring,toselectthetopranking60applicantstoenterthenursingprogramforthefallandspringterms.

Acceptancetothenursingprogramiscompetitive.Studentsareselectedaccordingtoa100-pointrankingsystem.Totalpointsforacceptancedependonthepoolofapplicantswitheachapplicationsubmissioncycle.Studentsarerankedbasedontheevaluationoffourfactors:

Math,ReadingComprehension,andAnatomyandPhysiologyarescoredandstudentsmustachieveaminimumof75%oneachsection.

LearningStyleAssessment,PersonalityProfileandCriticalThinkingsectionsarenotscoredhoweverthe3sectionsprovidevaluableinformationtoassistthestudentandfaculty.
