Families are welcome to join the residents for group portraits. Below is just a sample of the beautiful pictures that were recently taken. These photos are also a perfect example of the journeys that have been taken through Morrow Home’s Circle of Care. Carol Everson previously resided in our Homestead Assisted Living. While Bob and Lorraine Manke were nursing home residents at the time of the photo session, the couple now have made Homestead Assisted Living their new home. Eotus Tonn was a previous resident at our MaryCrest As- sisted Living. And then there’s our dear Mae Paquette, who began her journey with us at Parkview Indepen- dent Living in August of 2001, moved to MaryCrest Assisted Living, and now resides in our nursing home. What a great example of Morrow Home’s Circle of Care! You don’t have to wear a Super-Hero Costume to be ahero. You can be a hero by following your life’s calling, whatever that may be. Heroes aren’t in it for the glory.Heroes care. They follow their heart. And so it is withKaren Brownell.

Karen is a CNA. My definition for CNA is CertifiedNursing Angel. Karen loved her job and it showed. Shewas named Employee of the Year in 1991 and also wonthe top CNA award from the State that year.

Karen was on the job at the Morrow Memorial Homein November 1997. She told a co-worker that she feltlike she was going to faint. Karen immediatelycollapsed. She had a full Cardiac Arrest. She died whilecaring for others. Fortunately, Alyce Johnson, RN atMorrow Memorial Home, performed CPR until theambulance arrived quickly and they saved her life. Thatwas just the beginning.

The ambulance took her to the local hospital. She diedagain there, and once again was revived. She wastransferred to the regional hospital with the best heartcare. She lost her life and was revived five more timesthere. She was in a coma for two weeks. Karen’s heartwas not able to function on its own. She had to get aPacemaker/Defibrillator. Although they are supposedto last about seven years, she is already on her sixthPacemaker/Defibrillator in 14 years. She is on a HeartTransplant List.

It has been a long road to recovery. She continued towork her way back and eventually she returned to herjob as a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) at the same

nursing home, even though it was quite strenuous forher. Morrow Memorial Home has accommodated herhealth care concerns. I always loved to hear her storiesof the latest ventures of some of her patients. She usedhumor and compassion to get her through thechallenging parts of being a CNA.

She was tired all the time and had little time and energyfor other things, but she still managed to work. Shebabysat her Grandchildren regularly while herDaughter-in-Law attended Nursing School. TheDoctors pleaded with her to give up this kind of work,as it takes a toll on her. The wires attaching herPacemaker/Defibrillator to the heart sometimes cameloose from all the heavy lifting she did on the job. Justthe same, she could not be dissuaded from her work. She cringed at the thought of an office job, which wouldhave put less stress on her heart. She reached the pointwhere the Doctors told her she was 100 % dependanton the Pacemaker/Defibrillator. All this while, Karencontinued to spread love and cheer to the aging residentson her wing of the nursing home. She gave, andcontinues to give, material things to them, as well asher time and attention. Most of all, she gives them herheart—the well-worn heart of an angel—with no stringsattached, just a few wires and a small box with a battery.

*Sue Brownell’s husband is Karen’s cousin. Thisarticle originally appeared in “The Gratitude BookProject: A Celebration of Personal Heroes.” SusanBrownell founded and writes for the award-winningwebsite www.SanctuaryForCancerCaregivers.com.

The 2nd floorhallways are being treated with textured wallpaper and wainscoting which help to bring a more home-like feel tothe area. The beauty shop updates were made possible by a donation from Mary Morrow’s Attic. The hallwayrenovations are the result of a gift from the Morrow Home Foundation.
