Mental Health Nursing Mental Health Nursing • A discipline that enables people to reach and maintain their
mental health and social goals in order to achieve their optimum quality of life
• Involves collaborative working with service users (and their families where appropriate) in a partnership approach
• Work with children, working age adults and the older person
• In residential units, wards, clients’ homes and in the community
• Involves effective working with other agencies (eg. Social Services)

Learning Disabilities NursingLearning Disabilities Nursing• You will make a specialised contribution to the lives of
people with learning disabilities across the age spectrum & in a range of settings
• You will assist individuals with all aspects of their lives (eg health, social, employment) to enable them to achieve optimum health and social wellbeing
• Support children, adults and older people with complex needs (eg autism, challenging behaviour, multiple disabilities, mental health problems & dementia)
• Lead improvements in both specialist and mainstream services for people with learning disabilities & their families/carers

What will you study? What will you study? • Range of modules undertaken each year• Year 1 – Focuses on development of fundamental knowledge & skills
required to deliver quality patient care in all fields of nursing (care, compassion & communication, human development/functioning across the age continuum, decision-making, improving health & well being, professional nursing practice – mostly core modules)
• Year 2 – Focuses on field of nursing practice. Modules further develop decision-making skills, explore use of evidence to promote best practice/nursing care, service provision & user/carer experience
• Year 3 – Modules facilitate development of leadership skills, ability to effectively manage patient care & improve health/social care practice within field of nursing
• Each year – 50% of time spent in practice • You will gain some practice experience of other fields of nursing
