numerical assignment

1
This is a numerical assignment. This can be done in groups of maximum 6 members (and minimum 1 of course -- individualists are always acknowledged). Submit one report per group. Write names of all members of the group. No hardcopy submission. Please send the soft copy of the report to my gmail id . Total Marks : 8 1.Produce three plots, one each for cases (a) (b) and (c) as the final result. 2.Write a short note (maximum 3 sentences) analyzing your result. 3.Explain the algorithm/logic, any equations used clearly. Use sketches to explain geometric arguments. 4.Attach the code. 5.Mention any reference material used. Problem :- Duration of day (ie., length of hours for which the Sun is above horizon at a given location on earth) varies across the year depending on the latitude of the location. This is due to the tilt of earthʼs rotation axis to its orbital plane. From the internet find out the variation in the declination angle of sun across the year. We have seen in class that the span of time a celestial object stays above your horizon depends on the declination of the object and the latitude of your position on earth (See class presentation slides #33 to #39 to refresh your memory). Use it to estimate the duration of the day through the year for (a) Tromsø, Norway (b) Bangalore, IN (c) Sao Paulo, Brazil. You have to find out the latitude of these cities from the internet. You can approximate, say Sao Paulo to be at 23˚ South instead of using 23.55˚ for example. Make a plot of the duration of the day vs the month of the year for all three cases. 1.Produce three plots, one each for cases (a) (b) and (c) as the final result.2.Write a short note (maximum 3 sentences) analyzing your result.3.Explain the algorithm/logic, any equations used clearly. Use sketches to explain geometric arguments. 4.Attach the code.5.Mention any reference material used.

    Problem :-

Duration of day (ie., length of hours for which the Sun is above horizon at a given location on earth) varies across the year depending on the latitude of the location. This is due to the tilt of earths rotation axis to its orbital plane.

From the internet find out the variation in the declination angle of sun across the year. We have seen in class that the span of time a celestial object stays above your horizon depends on the declination of the object and the latitude of your position on earth (See class presentation slides #33 to #39 to refresh your memory).

Use it to estimate the duration of the day through the year for (a) Troms, Norway (b) Bangalore, IN (c) Sao Paulo, Brazil. You have to find out the latitude of these cities from the internet. You can approximate, say Sao Paulo to be at 23 South instead of using 23.55 for example.

Make a plot of the duration of the day vs the month of the year for all three cases.
