Dear Parents, Friends, Staff and Students, I have quoted the words of Ronald Rolheiser on a number of occasions this year already. I find his writings meaningful and also at times quite challenging. He talks much common sense and speaks of spirituality in a manner that captures your interest and imagination. At the core of our Marcellin community is both the Gospel mission and our Marist charism. Our faith life should be central to all we do here. That can take many different forms but it is worth reflecting on from time to time. Rolheiser quotes the theologian Edward Schillebeeckx where he states “what we dream alone remains a dream, but what we dream with others can become a reality”. He says that he goes to Church because he realizes the importance of his individuality, the limits of his private self. “Alone, standing apart from community, I am no more powerful than my own personality and charisma, which, in a world of six billion people, will not make much of a difference.” In the week following the death of Pope John Paul II I attended a service held at St Mary’s Cathedral. Four of our Year 11 boys also accompanied me. I found it a meaningful and prayerful experience, but what especially struck me at the time was our shared Catholic heritage and our unity of purpose. I think it is something we can often take for granted. To hear all gathered responding in unison despite our various backgrounds emphasized to me the great strength of purpose that exists within our faith community. Rolheiser reminds us of the impact our faith community can have for the good, far more significant than what can be attained by us as individuals. As a school community we achieve much more when united in a common purpose. The raising of $21,000 in our Lenten appeal just goes to show what can be achieved when common goals unite us. Rolheiser places a few challenges before us but also reminds us that as a faith community we can make a significant difference when unity of purpose is evident. Rolheiser reflects further on this by saying: Number 9 15 June 2005 When I watch the news at night and see all that is still needed in our world, I go to bed somewhat depressed, painfully aware of my own powerlessness to change anything. That depression is well founded. Alone, I am pretty powerless, able to make a splash, but not a difference. A very large group of people watching the news together could change the world. The church is that group of persons. As a world organisation—with a heart for justice, peace, and the poor—it is far from perfect, but it is the best of a bad lot and it offers positive hope. The first thing I should do, if I hope to help bring about some justice and peace on this planet, is to begin to dream with others within a worldwide body of persons committed to the same dream. If I hope to do that I should go to church. With best wishes, Br Bill Sullivan fms Headmaster May we not take for granted the gift of faith or overlook the many benefits that may flow by sharing our hopes and dreams with one another. Dear Parents, Friends, Staff and Students,

I have quoted the words of Ronald Rolheiser on a number of occasions this year already. I find his writings

meaningful and also at times quite challenging. He talks much common sense and speaks of spirituality in a

manner that captures your interest and imagination.

At the core of our Marcellin community is both the Gospel mission and our Marist charism. Our faith life should be central to all we do here. That can take many different forms but it is worth reflecting on from time to

time.

Rolheiser quotes the theologian Edward Schillebeeckx where he states “what we dream alone remains a

dream, but what we dream with others can become a reality”. He says that he goes to Church because he realizes

the importance of his individuality, the limits of his private self. “Alone, standing apart from community, I am no more powerful than my own personality and charisma, which, in a world of six billion people, will not make much

of a difference.”

In the week following the death of Pope John Paul II I attended a service held at St Mary’s Cathedral. Four of

our Year 11 boys also accompanied me. I found it a meaningful and prayerful experience, but what especially

struck me at the time was our shared Catholic heritage and our unity of purpose. I think it is something we can

often take for granted. To hear all gathered responding in unison despite our various backgrounds emphasized to me the great strength of purpose that exists within our faith community.

Rolheiser reminds us of the impact our faith community can have for the good, far more significant than what

can be attained by us as individuals. As a school community we achieve much more when united in a common

purpose. The raising of $21,000 in our Lenten appeal just goes to show what can be achieved when common goals

unite us. Rolheiser places a few challenges before us but also reminds us that as a faith community we can make a significant difference when unity of purpose is evident.

Rolheiser reflects further on this by saying:

Number 9 15 June 2005

When I watch the news at night and see all that is still needed in our world, I go to bed somewhat depressed, painfully aware of my own powerlessness to change anything. That depression is well founded. Alone, I am pretty powerless, able to make a splash, but not a

difference. A very large group of people watching the news together could change the world. The church is that group of persons. As a world organisation—with a heart for justice,

peace, and the poor—it is far from perfect, but it is the best of a bad lot and it offers positive hope. The first thing I should do, if I hope to help bring about some justice and peace on this

planet, is to begin to dream with others within a worldwide body of persons committed to the same dream. If I hope to do that I should go to church.

With best wishes,

Br Bill Sullivan fms

Headmaster

May we not take for granted the gift of faith or

overlook the many benefits that may flow by sharing

our hopes and dreams with one another.

MCC RUGBY LEAGUE UNDER 14 TEAM

The MCC U 14 Rugby League team had quite a convincing win last week against C. B. Lewisham defeating them 42 – 16. Boost Juice Player of the Match went to Matt

Richardson who played a fantastic game. Chris Thomas also had a great game scoring many of the tries. James Natoli and Pat Renford did a great job in communicating with

all the players. The next game against St Leo’s Wahroonga is the last of the rounds to secure a place in the top four teams. Hopefully, the U 14’s will make it to the grand finals

and get their chance to avenge their defeat in 2004. Tim McCarthy (Manager)
