PRINCIPAL’S REPORT
CMASSA Successful Again!
Congratulations to all of the students who contributed to our successful
CMASSA Athletics Day; it was great to see so much encouragement
and support from our whole community. Thanks go to the Parents &
Friends group who organised the lunches and canteen that went off
without a hitch. Thanks to all of the staff and volunteers who helped
time, measure, record and administer the day. Special thanks go to
Denise and Grant Grieger who have helped with athletics training and
organisation for over 18 years at SRAS.
Internet Speed
Please be assured we do have internet at Swan Reach Area School alt-
hough it is particularly slooooooowwwwww. Although we are investigat-
ing faster methods please be aware that students do not need to bring
their own internet source to school as this is only an unnecessary finan-
cial burden on parents. Also an agreement would need to be in place
ensuring that students adhere to the same guidelines as they would in
the normal school agreement.
Volunteers and Parent Visitors to Site
I’m happy with the culture that we have developed where parents feel
comfortable on site. It is important to maintain this as we work together
for our students however it is important that all are aware of the re-
strictions of free movement around the school. This does not relate to
parents who are simply dropping off or picking up their children in the
mornings and afternoons. Parents who want to visit their students, meet
with teachers without prior organisation or drop into classes or students
who want to ring their parents must check in at the Front Office first. All
of our volunteers are subject to Criminal History Screenings and are not
allowed to wander around the grounds either. Please see me if this con-
cerns you.
Internet & Technology Parent Safety Session April 3rd 6pm
Ben O’Shaughnessy (SAPOL) has been asked by the school to present
an internet safety session for parents to ensure that our children are safe
at all times with their technology and when online. Feel free to bring in
your children’s handheld technology (eg ipods) on the night and we
may be able to step through the safe processes discussed.
If you wish to nominate for outstanding Teacher, leader or support staff, nominations close at
5pm Thursday 10th April 2014 please visit
www.decd.sa.gov.au/teachingawards. to nominate.
IMPORTANT NOTICE

Whilst the new ipad and touch screen are still very popular, the
highlights this fortnight have been the hard work shown by the
children busy in the kitchen and the garden! Pulling out the old
shrubs and replacing them with some hardy succulents and hav-
ing a go at chopping vegetables and rolling rice paper rolls! Here
are some photos of the children in action.
Reminder: if you haven’t bought a ticket for our Easter raffle
please do so! Tickets are $1 each with a 1st, 2nd and 3rd prize to be
drawn. Jess Schwarz

MIDDLE AND JUNIOR SCHOOL REPORT
Last Friday night, the Junior School co-hosted a dinner at the
Nildottie Hall with the Nildottie Progress Association. This was a
very successful night raising approximately $1400. A HUGE thank-
you to all the parents that helped on the night – the night would
not have been possible without your gracious offer of time. Also,
a big thank you to all the families (and Miss Terry Brandon) who
donated a prize for the raffle. This money will go a long way
towards reducing the cost of the JS excursion and camp.
On Tuesday, the Reception to Year 7 students went to Truro
Primary School to see the SA Water Travelling Program “Flushed”.
This was a science show that began with establishing what goes
into sewage (wastewater), starting with a dramatic simulation of
the human digestive system. It tied in with work that students will
be doing this year in Health, Science and Geography.
All students enjoyed this outing.
Please don’t forget that next Thursday night (3rd April), Mr Ben
O’Shaughnessy the local policeman will be running a session at
the school about ICT safety, particularly in the home. This session
starts at 6pm.
Currently the JS teachers are in the process of organising each
student’s portfolio to be sent home at the end of the term.
Please take the time to read these documents as they are a
reflection of what your child has been
achieving at school.

The Reception to Year 7 Classes were invited to attended a
presentation by Water SA called Flushed in Truro recently.
The children learned about how food travels through the body
and about the waste that we produce and how that waste is
managed.
David the presenter
made it very
entertaining for the
kids and
everyone had an

missed in the coming years.

STUDENT REPRESENTATIVE COUNCIL
Recently Swan Reach SRC members visited the Adelaide
Entertainment Centre to participated in the GRIP Student
Leadership Conference. It was a great day which was broken up
into six sessions with various topics regarding leadership in the
school and how we can encourage students to be involved n
events we run. We learnt that to be a successful leadership
group we need to start with each other and eventually work our
way out to the community. One of the sessions that we felt was
most influential was the ‘Everest’ concept as it gave strategies
on how to accomplish things.
Part of the conference included a panel of the spoke’s people
with a Q&A session with the leadership team and a final review.
Overall, it was a successful day and all the students that attend-
ed came back with new information and techniques on how to
help their school.
