In your own life be a friend to as many people as you can.

They need your friendship. Your life is enlarged in proportion to

the friendships you have, to the knowledge which people have of

your own virtues. Your task in life is immeasurably simplified

when people think you are a friend, for they learn only from

those whom they like. No one has ever been known to treas-

ure the rich intellectual nuggets which his enemy gave to him.

A good life always depends on the number of friends you have,

and it will continue to be this way.

Dear Students of 1958-59:

There are three quotations upon which a per son can build a lifetime

of success and happiness. The sources do not matter but the thoughts

may -well be remembered. ". . . no man knows better than himself what

It Is that he can do and he does not know until he has tr ied. . . " ". . . the

man who does no more with his l ife than provide for his own material

desires may as well not have lived. . . " " . . . the man who per forms a

real service to mankind will not go unpaid. . . "

In simple words this says: Have confidence In yourse l f , consider

material things as the subordinate Issues In life, and serve others In

whatever you do. Educate yourself with these thoughts In mind and you

need have no fear of the fu tu re .

Best wishes for a long, prosperous, and happy life.

Sincerely yours ,

E. T. VinesPresident

Miss Eutonia CluckEditor of the YearbookFORT SMITH JUNIOR COLLEGEGrand Avenue & Waldron RoadFort Smith, Arkansas

Dear Miss Cluck:

I must tell you that of all the requests that have come to me this yearthe delightful burden of choosing your "beauties" has been the mostgratifying.

I must say that EVERY picture you sent had grace, charm and intelli-gence. I would appreciate it if you would so inform all of the girlswhose pictures I have looked at, for there was not one exception.

A choice among so many who deserve to win is, of course, a verypersonal one. All I can say is that it was diff icul t to make.

May I take this opportunity to wish you and all at Fort Smith JuniorCollege much happiness and a Merry Christmas.

JIMBRAGAN - 5'11" FreshmanForward from Fort Smith

Probably the fastest moving player on the squad, Jim'sfierce determination, dogged persistence, and will towin earned him a place on the traveling squad during thelatter part of the season. His fine attitude and cooperativespirit earned him an even finer spot in the hearts of histeammates.

DALE BROWN - 6'1" SophomoreForward from Muldrow, Oklahoma

Letterman during the 1957-58 season. .. aggressive boardman.. .fine jump shooter.. .Left school at semester to

vjoin Uncle Sam's Marines.

Page 96: NUMA 1959

JOE GELZINE - 6'4 1/2" FreshmanCenter from Fort Smith

Altho lacking in experience, Joe became one of the bestLion post players in years. His fierce determination, aggressive board play, and unerring jump shot lifted himto the second spot in Lion scoring during the season. His43 points against Sayre J.C. set a new individual singlegame scoring record for Lion players. Joe's height, weight, and experience figure prominently in the Lion's hopesfor another Conference Championship during the 1959-60season.

JOHN ENGLAND - 6'1" FreshmanForward from Fort Smith

With no previous high school experience, Johnny developedthroughout the season to the point where he showed tre-mendous potential. His terrific jumping ability and hissmooth movements on the floor give him a fine chanceat the starting five next year.

Page 97: NUMA 1959

CHARLES LOUM - 5'11" SophomoreGuard from Fort Smith

With no high school experience whatever, "Lum" pro-gressed to one of the starting guard positions with theloss of Giddens. His fiery defensive play, aggressivedriving layups, and uncanny ability to feed the openplayer made him a fine asset to the squad. His enthusiasmand team spirit made hisvalue to the team immeasurable.Because of his value he was named a letterman in bothhis freshman and sophomore seasons.

SIDNEY MARTIN - 5'11" FreshmanGuard from Fort Smith

Sid's dogged determination to excell and improve madehim the most improved member of the Lion squad. Thoughparticipating very little in actual competition, Sid dis-played the spirit of team play, being always ready whencalled upon. Further improvement of the kind shownduring the 1958-59 season make Sid a fine guard candidatefor next year.

Page 98: NUMA 1959

LEWIS GRIFFITH - 6 fl" FreshmanForward from Charleston

Lacking high school experience and forced to spend moretime in studying, Lew was lost to the squad at the endof the first semester. Using an accurate one-handed pushshot and rebounding extremely well, Lew showed hispotential for next season.

JAMES HUMPHREY - 6'1" FreshmanGuard from Roland, Oklahoma

Probably the best defensive player on the squad, "Humph's"inability to round into condition prevented his regularplay with the Lions. His rugged defense and great desiremake him a good candidate for next season.

Page 99: NUMA 1959

BILL MOSS - Freshman 6'1"Forward from Fort Smith

A fine defensive man, determined floor player, and agood outside shooter, Bill developed into a fine playerduring the second semester. His tremendous potentialmake him a leading prospect for the 1959-60 edition ofthe Lions.

RON GREEN - 6'3" SophomoreForward from Lavaca

Ron's tremendous jump shot, delicate tip-ins, and tre-mendous rebounding made him the leading scorer on theLion squad and second-high scorer in Lion history. Becauseof his aggressive play, pinpoint passing, and leadershipabilities, he was elected Captain of the 1958-59 squadby his teammates. A two year letterman, Ron will besorely missed next season.

Page 100: NUMA 1959

DEWEY SHOCKLEY - 6'4", 200 poundCenter from Waldron

Afflicted with leg trouble throughout the first semesterand never quite rounding into condition, Shock becameone of the finest rebounders during the second semester. His aggressive work under the basket and his tremendousdesire put him in good position for a starting berth nextyear.

JAMES REYNOLDS - 6'2" FreshmanFrom Fort Smith

With no high school basketball background, James becamea very fine addition to the Lion squad and contributedgreatly to its success. One of the fine rebounders andjump shooters, Jim never said "quit" at any time. Histremendous potential and scoring ability make him a lead-ing candidate for the starting forward berth next season.

Page 101: NUMA 1959

RALPH VINES - 6*4", 180 poundCenter from Greenwood

His sweeping left-handed hook shot, tough rebounding, and fine defensive play soon earned Ralph a starting berthin his first semester. His determination to learn to playdefense made him most valuable throughout the season.Teaming with Gelzine at the post positions, he becamethe third leading scorer on the Lion squad. A lettermanhis freshman year, he is expected to produce even greaterfeats next season.

JIM WYATT - 6'0" SophomoreGuard from Branch

Selected by his teammates as Co-Captain for the 1958-59 season, Jim's performance as the team's outside manwas tremendous. His fast-break layups, close in jumpshots, quick feeds to breaking men, and untiring defensiveplay-made him one of the most valuable men on the squad.Anxious to take the toughest of the opponents to guard,Jim was happiest when holding a potentially high scorerto almost nothing. His fine play and leadership ability, tho a great loss to next year's Lions, will be a great ad-dition to another team somewhere.

Page 102: NUMA 1959

GEORGE TA KINGTON - 6'1" FreshmanCenter from Lavaca

By far the best ball-handling post man on the squad andwith a knack for moving about quite freely with the bigmen under the basket, George was extremely valuable tothe Lion team throughout the season. At his very bestwith defensive men all about him, his fine passes set upmany Lion baskets by his teammates. Although only6'1" , George was his happiest when clearing a rebound ofthe backboards, a feat he accomplished with regularity.George is almost assured a starting berth next season afterhis fine play this year.

DANA DOOLY - Student ManagerLavaca

Sidelined by a knee operation during the 1957-58 season,Dana assumed the duties as squad "stooge" when the kneefailed to respond this season. His interest, enthusiasm, experience, and attentiveness to Lion players contributedgreatly to the success of this year's team. A great ballplayer in his own right, Dana never complained at notbeing able to play. Such spiritand team interest exempli-fied the role ot the true "stooge" whose motto is "Keep'em ready for play!"
