New Speaker to replace Hyunsung Cho – Holly Grace, Australian hot glass artist Due to unexpected circumstances Hyunsung Cho will be unable to come to New Zealand, and his workshop has been cancelled. We are delighted to have been able replace to him with Holly Grace as a speaker at the conference. Holly was a finalist in this year’s Ranamok for the second time. Her outstanding work explores themes of Image and Object beautiful-ly, as described in this abstracted bio from the Sabbia Gallery in Sydney:

As part of my education as a glassmaker and as an artist, I travelled many times to Scandinavia. These trips have been instrumental in my development of my understanding of glass as a material and in form-ing my aesthetic as an artist. It was in Denmark and in Sweden that I began to look and observe the land-scape drawn to the soft transitions in colour that were so different from the intense bright light that is West-ern Australia. It was also during this time that I first began to use the camera, first as a means of document-ing the landscape and then later becoming part of the artwork itself. Having come back to Australia I have in the past five years began focusing my attention on the Australian Landscape and in particular around the Snowy Moun-tains. It is there in and around places like Thredbo, Perisher and Falls Creek I have begun my journey anew....By using glass I hope to take the viewer with me on my journey and to appreciate these unique and beautiful landscapes that are Australia. Holly Grace, 2013

We want to share a letter from Elizabeth MacDougall, urging

past finalists to update their biographies!

Letter to previous Ranamok Finalists (and friends of!), The founders of the Ranamok Glass Prize, Maureen Cahill and Andy Plummer, have decided to bring an end to the Prize follow-ing its upcoming 2014 exhibition and tour. The closure will mark 20 years of operations for Ranamok. As you may know, we launched a fantastic new website earlier this year. www.ranamok.com. We would like to give all previous finalists an opportunity to update their online biography before that section goes live. Our hope (budget allowing) is that with the help of our designers and developers, the site will remain online for at least next five years. It is difficult to plan further than that due to technology changing so fast. The biography section is currently hidden but finalist biographies will appear at the bottom of artist page. Previous Ranamok Recipients or 2014 Finalists do not need to update their biographies. Please contact me directly at [email protected] and I will give you your login details to update your biographies online. Also, please feel free to forward this message to anyone who is not an ausglass member. All updated biographies need to be completed by the 3rd September. Members Exhibition Prizes 2014 The committee is very excited about the exhibition in that not only is it for four weeks in such a prestigious venue but we also have a fantas-tic line up of prizes, many of which are new for this year. Works will be judged by speakers attending the conference and where possible, prizes will be personally presented by their sponsors during the Raise a Glass viewing on Friday night. Overall First Prize This is a cash prize of $1000 sponsored by NZSAG and comes with a voucher from the well known American company Hisglassworks for prod-ucts valued at US$250. Wallace Arts Trust Solo Show A first for NZSAG, members need to opt in for this prize on the exhibition entry form. The Wallace Arts Trust will provide the venue and assist the artist in putting on a solo show as detailed in guidelines. MAP Scholarship Generously donated by Claudia Borella Glass Design, this prize enables the recipient to attend one of her much sought after MAP Master Classes and has a value of $1250 Emerging Artist Prize Ann Robinson has been a keen and generous supporter of our up and coming members over many exhibitions. What was previously the Stu-dent Prize is now opened up to include all emerging artists. Members need to indicate on the entry form if they are eligible for this $1000 cash prize Mixed Media and Innovation Well known for her own innovation and use of mixed media, Te Rongo Kirkwood has sponsored a new cash prize of $500 for the work that best fits this criteria. Outstanding Blown Glass One of our longest standing glass blowers, Garry Nash has given us a $500 cash prize for the most outstanding piece of blown glass. Flamework Prize Sponsored by the Australian company Affordable Inspirations, Kerry Carson has kindly donated a prize for the flame workers, a voucher for NZ$250 of products. Excellence in Cast Glass Di Tocker is supporting the casters amongst us with a special prize of a voucher for Dicastglass products to the value of $250. People’s Choice Over the duration of the exhibition people’s choice votes will be collected, the prize for which will be a subscription to the beautiful Australi-an magazine Craft Arts International Spot Prizes We thought it would be fun to have a couple of spot prizes to be given at strategic times during the conference. We have chosen to use those kindly donated by Gaffer Glass, a voucher for $250 of their glass supplies and Diamond Edge, $200 worth of products.
