Students who aremembers of the Federation ofThought Clubs organized thedemonstration, with protestorsbringing their own food rather thanentering the dining halls, andstationing themselves near the MainCampus alley to call for lower prices. The basic student meal plan atBilkent is a table d’hote system, offering students set meals forbreakfast, lunch and/or dinner.Purchase of the meal plan is optional.Prior to this month, students couldbuy a prepaid food service plan to

cover their meals throughout asemester or academic year. Duringthe week preceding the boycott, achange in this system wasannounced. Under the new system, students may purchase credits for asfew as five set meals at a time, at aprice of 3.15 TL/meal. The protesting students statedthat the meal prices on campus aretoo high for student budgets. “Westarted our boycott on December 9with our homemade sandwiches infront of the main alley fountain,” saida spokesperson for the group. “Webelieve that by acting in unity, we canresolve the issue. We want a decreasein the fixed menu price and wewould also like to see vegetarianalternatives on the menu.”

A ilkent University Library hastwo special events this week.On Tuesday, December 17,we will host the first of our“Bilkent'te KütüphanecilikSeminerleri” for this year. The seminarwill address the important subject ofOpen Access publishing, from both theacademic and library perspectives. Ourguest speakers will include Prof. BülentKarasözen (METU), Prof. Yaşar Tonta(Hacettepe University) and Dr. BurcuBulut (İpek University Library). Theseminar will be in Turkish and will takeplace at 1 p.m. in the Art Gallery. Formore information, please see ourwebsite:http://library.bilkent.edu.tr/tr/oglensoylesileri/kut_sem.html.Also, on Wednesday this week, Dr.Nilgün Olguntürk (chair of IAED) willdeliver the third and final LunchtimeLecture for this semester, entitled“Color Design in the BuiltEnvironment.” In her talk, Dr.Olguntürk will discuss how color is aninherent property of building materialsand an inseparable component indesign. It is used in all surfaces andelements, including everything fromlight and paint to art and ambience, from aesthetics to functionality. Theuse of highly reflective surfaces and

monochromatic schemes is known tobe problematic for visually impairedpeople. Due to multiple renovationsand change in use, older environmentsbecome similarly complex, with highlevels of “visual noise.” Both public andprivate spaces can benefit fromknowledgeable color design andlighting, affecting the feelings ofbuilding occupants and influencingattitudes and behavior. The negativeeffects of a poor-quality visualenvironment are apparent as increasedsensory deprivation, visual monotonyand boredom. Improving the ambiencewith color design elevates morale andcontributes to well-being. Functionaluse of color coding and landmarking inbuildings contributes to wayfinding. Moreover, color increases legibility ofthe environment, helping elderly andvisually impaired people navigate thespace. Research to establish somemechanisms from the complexity ofthose environments and to understandhow color design affects people whooccupy different types of environmentswill be discussed in contexts fromhomes, schools and hospitals to prisonsand transport environments. Thelecture will take place at 12:40 p.m. inthe Main Campus Library Art Gallery, and refreshments will be provided.

n Wednesday, December 11, Dr. Defne Günay (University of Sheffield,UK) gave a talk to IR faculty members and postgraduate students. Hertopic was "Europeanization and State Capacity: Turkey in the Middle East." One of the many arguments Dr. Günay put forth during herpresentation was that the process of Europeanization in Turkey has beenaccompanied by state transformation, offering state agents new opportunities as wellas constraints in the pursuit of their policy objectives. Shedding light on Turkey'srelations with the European Union, Dr. Günay outlined the mechanisms of EUenlargement and emphasized the point that Europeanization does not necessarilymean adopting EU standards, rules and codes of behavior, but can lead to theopposite effects as well. In the second part of the talk, Turkish relations with the Middle East werereviewed in detail and the salient role of state actors in opening up businessopportunities was discussed. The state, Dr. Günay stressed, has beeninstrumental in pushing for more trade links with the Middle East and has usedEuropeanization for purposes of trade expansion in the region. As at all IR talks, the presentation was followed by a lively and enlightening question and answerperiod involving staff and students alike. By Arlinda Pllana (IR/II)

International Student Skits Show FunnySide of Life in Turkey

n December 11,international and exchangestudents who are takingTurkish 111 and 112performed short plays in Turkish astheir end-of-semester presentations. The students impressed the audiencewith their creative, entertainingscenarios. The event, which alsoincluded a talent show and some shortfilms, took place in C-Block Auditorium. The skits depicted amusing incidentsexperienced by international students in

Turkey due to linguisticmisunderstandings or unfamiliarTurkish customs. One sketch featured a“Romeo and Juliet” scenario, withRomeo as an American exchangestudent and a Turkish Juliet. Other playsdepicted students ordering food in alocal restaurant, applying for a residencepermit, getting used to life at Bilkentand watching Turkish television. In addition to the skits, the studentsput on a talent show, giving them theopportunity to demonstrate a variety ofskills, and screened short films they hadmade.

On Wednesday, December11, the Bilkent UniversitySeminar Series on Polity,Society and the Worldwelcomed distinguished politicalscience scholar Prof. Sabri Sayarı, whodelivered a lecture on “Turkey’sExperience with Democracy.”The talk started with an overview ofTurkish political developments from1945 up to the present time. Prof.Sayarı characterized Turkey as acountry of early transition and lateconsolidation. The transition todemocracy was relatively smooth, especially compared to the disruptionsexperienced elsewhere in Southernand Eastern Europe. But despite thepromising start, Turkey suffered fromthree regime breakdowns, in 1960,1971 and 1980, which hindered theconsolidation of democracy. Prof.Sayarı noted that Turkey has beensuccessful in institutionalizingelectoral democracy -- a politicalsystem of free, fair and legitimateelections coupled with a resilientparty system. Yet, he observed,Turkey is still lagging behind in itsefforts to institutionalize liberaldemocracy, recording manyshortcomings in terms of freedom ofthought and expression, human andcivil rights, protection of the rights ofcitizens from the state, judicialindependence, and rights of ethnicand religious minorities. Prof. Sayarı offered invaluableinsights on the future of Turkishpolitics, focusing on two opposingtrends Turkey has evinced these last10 years. On the one hand, thenormalization of civil-militaryrelations and the steps taken towardresolving the Kurdish issue shouldmake us optimistic about the future. On the other hand, recentphenomena such as the dominationof politics by a single person, theimposition of an extremelymajoritarian understanding ofdemocracy and the use of excessivepolice force constitute what he calledthe “democratic backsliding” ofTurkey. Finally, Prof. Sayarı warned ofthe perils of a possible transition topresidentialism, which will fail tomake the political system moredemocratic and could pave the way forauthoritarian rule in Turkey. European ResearchCouncil Award(Continued from Page 1) The ERCConsolidator Grant, which was awardedseparately to Dr. Bayındır and Dr. İlday, aims to support researchers inconsolidating their own independentresearch teams or programs. The grant isavailable to researchers of any nationalitywith 7-12 years of experience sincecompletion of the PhD and a scientifictrack record showing great promise.Dr. Bayındır, a faculty member in theDepartment of Physics and actingdirector of UNAM, received his grant fora proposal that focuses on thedevelopment of a novel fabricationtechnique based on top-to-bottomiterative size reduction innanotechnology. Inexpensive, high-throughput, multi-material nanowirearrays pave the way for novel applications, including nanowire-based large-areaflexible sensor platforms, phase changememory, nanostructure-enhancedphotovoltaics, semiconductor nanophotonics, dielectric metamaterials, linear andnonlinear photonics and nanowire-enabled high-performance composites.Dr. İlday, assistant professor in theDepartment of Physics, and his teamhave developed a method that allowscreation of self-organized nanometer-scale patterns on material surfaces usinga femtosecond laser. Their techniqueaddresses a well-known problemregarding regularity of such self-organized pattern formation that had notbeen solved since the 1960s, allowingthem to achieve unprecedented levels ofregularity, even on curved or flexiblesurfaces. Dr. İlday has been awarded anERC Consolidator Grant worth 2 millioneuros, which will provide the opportunityto develop these concepts further. Withthe grant, Dr. İlday aims to demonstratelaser-controlled self-assembly of aplethora of 2D patterns, crystals andquasicrystals alike, eventually assembledlayer by layer into the third dimension --an important development in thedirection of a 3D material synthesizer. The ERC Starting Grant supportsup-and-coming research leaders who arepreparing to establish teams and beginconducting independent research. Thisgrant program is for researchers with 2-7years of experience since completion ofthe PhD and a scientific track recordshowing great promise. The 1.5 millioneuro Starting Grant received by Dr. Erbay, assistant professor in the Department ofMolecular Biology and Genetics and aresearcher at UNAM, recognizes hercontributions to understanding themolecular basis of atherosclerosis, avascular disease that is the leading causeof heart attacks. Dr. Erbay’s researchgroup will explore the close molecularintegration between the metabolic andimmune systems that is required forsystemic homeostasis and dysregulated inatherosclerosis, diabetes and obesity.Using a wide range of interdisciplinaryapproaches such as chemical genetics, transgenic mice, proteomics and RNAsequencing, they will aim to identify theprecise molecular mechanisms linkingmetabolic stress to immune activation, discoveries that would pave the way tonovel therapeutic approaches to thisdevastating disease cluster.

Bilkent News 4OPINIONS

ct 1, Scene 1When you read this, ourplay will have been long over. But as I’m writing my piecefor this week, there are less than tenhours to go before our opening night.Sounds like a suicide note at firstglance, doesn’t it? Well, I can assureyou that it’s not. The reader familiar with my pieceswill recognize that this opening israther different from my usualintroductions. Instead of focusing on atopic related to the arts and analyzing itin relation to personal experiences, Ihave decided to do something evenmore personal this time. I will take mywriter mask off for a day and tell youabout the little journey I’ve beenmaking for over a year now.About two years ago, I wasn’t muchdifferent from any computer sciencestudent. I was also minoring in Englishlanguage and literature (something itwas very hard to believe anyone woulddo), but apart from that I was focusedon my major study. This all changedwith a Shakespeare course I was taking.

[email protected] CEREN TURAN (CS/IV)

I’m sure you’re assuming that I fell inlove with Shakespeare and decided tocontinue with literature after Igraduated, but there’s a lot more to itthan that. If it hadn’t been for a girl Icouldn’t place, but who seemed awfullyfamiliar, coming up to talk to me andmentioning the play our instructor wasstaging that semester, I might havespent two boring years and still havebeen struggling with what I wanted todo for the rest of my life.So it started with that play. Unlikemost of my friends in the cast, I had noprevious acting experience. I didn’t evenknow that I enjoyed acting. But on theday of the first performance, Iunderstood what they say about theater. It is a very tiring and a stressfulbusiness, but the moment you hearpeople clapping, all your wearinessfades away and you remember why youlove theater so much. After that production was finished, Ifocused on reading plays for a couple ofmonths. It was really interesting to findout that I was having so much fun doinganything related to theater; it was as ifmy whole life had prepared me for this, and now it was time to sit back andenjoy. As graduation came closer, I startedto think about whether I wanted tocontinue with literature and writing. SoI got a few of those books people oftensay you shouldn’t bother with, becauseyou can’t learn “how to write” from abook: you need a massive amount of

practice for that. They couldn’t havebeen more wrong! That description Iread about the craft of the playwright, which focuses on the character’s way ofthinking -- the playwright is interestedin how thoughts are conveyed throughspeech, whether in monologues, dialogues or other forms ofconversation. When I read this, all myshort stories containing very briefdescriptive passages and very longconversations made sense: I was meantto write plays! Of course I wasn’t thatsure at the moment, but you neverknow if you don’t try. Then came a period that I’m lookingforward to experiencing again. I don’tthink there is any other feeling moresatisfying than putting the story in yourmind on paper, or in my case giving mycharacters an opportunity to be seen, totalk, to touch, to be. This stage, whichgenerally takes longer, for me took onlya couple of months. When I think aboutit now, I think the reason why I finishedwriting a play in three months wasbecause this story had been in mymind, trying to find a way out, for solong that when I gave it an opportunity,it immediately began emerging as Ityped. I’m about to explain why you’rereading this autobiographical statement. When I took my play to some of myinstructors -- and I should say that theyhave all been very supportive -- my lifechanged for the second time. One ofthem said something that I hadn’t even

thought of: “The good thing aboutwriting plays is that you can always getthem staged!” Yes, I could! At Bilkent? Why not? And six months after I talkedto the chair of the English Languageand Literature department about it,“Sirens of Lachesis” is to be staged forthe very first time this evening. The reason why I wanted to share allthis was not to offer lessons like, “If youwant something a lot and do all that isin your power to get it, you willeventually be happy.” In fact, there aretwo reasons. The first one is to relatethe background story of our play, whichI’m hoping at least a few readers willhave seen. Theater is often a selfishbusiness; it demands that all attentionbe focused on the performance. Sopeople generally judge according towhat they see on stage for two hours, and that is what they should do. But tobe an even better judge, I think oneneeds to see the whole picture. The second reason is to show myappreciation for the little coincidencesof life: a girl I was not even sure I knewasking me whether I wanted to be apart of a theater production, aninstructor being more supportive thananyone could have asked when heheard that I had written a play, and mylovely cast, who have helped methrough the good and the bad for thelast couple of months. Now, setting aside my Oscar speech,I should get going to the theater. I havemy opening night this evening!

unch vs. Warhol Anyone been to theMunch/Warhol exhibit atCerModern? I just managed to go this pastweekend. As a student in the Facultyof Fine Arts, I’ve gotten quitefamiliar with Andy Warhol: avisionary artist who expressed someof the challenges faced by his society, which was soaring in economic well-being and post-war optimism withoutrealizing how everything could comecrashing down as soon as thefollowing decade. Personally, I hadn’theard of Edvard Munch. Only when Iwent to the exhibition did I realizethat he was the creator of “TheScream,” a very famous paintingdepicting an agonized, distortedfigure set against a starkly coloredlandscape. As it turns out, Munchwas an important late 19th-early20th-century artist who influencedmany others, including Warhol. This show featured the commonpoints between the artists: theMunch prints that inspired Warhol, and Warhol’s expressions orinterpretations of them. Both artistsworked with prints, so most of the

exhibition was in fact composed ofvariations of the same few pieces.Among Munch’s works were his self-portrait and the “Madonna” series. This section of the gallery was mostlyblack and white, contrasting with theorange walls and the colorful Warholsthat one gets a sneak peek of beforeactually moving on to that part of theexhibit. Warhol’s works werevariations on the Munch prints justmentioned, as well as “The Scream.” As I later found out, Munch’s lifewas filled with a tension that he wastrying to depict, as seen in his mostfamous painting. Warhol’s life, on theother hand, was set in a time filledwith diversity. What especiallyfascinated him was the glamour ofhis society and the consequences ofthat glamour. He was quoted assaying that life feels like watchingtelevision, it is unreal -- so it’sunderstandable that he wouldquestion the value of certain thingsand elevate others, even if doing sowas controversial. Maybe preciselybecause it was controversial. As EdieSedgewick puts it in “Factory Girl,”“It may just be a painting, but it’s anidea, and the man behind that idea iswhat’s interesting.”“Factory Girl” is a thoroughlyintriguing movie about EdieSedgewick, one of Andy Warhol’ssuperstars. These “superstars” werebohemian, counterculture New YorkCity eccentrics. They were promotedby Warhol, who generated publicityfor his work in this way. They alsoproved his idea of “15 minutes of

fame”: that everyone will be famous, even if just for a glorious moment. This movie really got to me onseveral levels. The first is that Icannot see or hear anything aboutWarhol without immediately beingreminded of the way he was portrayedby Guy Pearce. This was controversialand received mixed reviews, some ofwhich criticized the way Warhol wasdepicted as being the one who ruinedSedgewick, who entered a downwardspiral after she met him until herdeath at the age of 28. The film ismore about Sedgewick and herexperience of the Factory (Warhol’sstudio in New York) than about theartist himself, but he is presented asan integral part of her life.Furthermore, he is shown as a greedyand selfish man who uses her lifeenergy and her family’s money for hisown purposes, mainly tocreate his “art.” Becauseof this, and his rejectionof her when, straying everso slightly from his circle, she befriends Bob Dylan,he and the environmenthe creates are implied tobe the causes of herdownfall. Now, I haven’t doneextensive research onWarhol and the pop art period; I don’tknow to what extent these depictionsare true. Actually, they seem likeexaggerations aimed at portrayingSedgewick as a victim, even if itmeans villifying other characters, above all, Andy Warhol. Still, Sienna

Miller’s portrayal of Sedgewick as atormented young woman was sopowerful and, from what I’ve foundout since, so accurate, that I can’thelp but be drawn in by this account.Possibly because they were somarginal, people don’t seem tohesitate before judging and blaming“members” of the Factory. Ironically, that was Warhol’s point: we will all befamous, but for what, and at whatprice? His paintings are not justrepetitions in different colors. Theyshow the different lenses throughwhich we see celebrities or therealities of everyday life. To go backto Warhol’s idea, life is so unreal, solike watching something remotelyrather than actually living it, that wecan see it in fuscia or bright green oryellow, and it won’t be any lessridiculous or any less transient. The exhibition showed hiswork from a time later thanthat of his most famouspieces. However, these laterworks feature the samevariety and courage in colorsand tone, while maybe beingmore grounded in theory.Since most of the Munchpieces displayed atCerModern were black andwhite, it made a greatdifference to see them in outrageouscolors. These tones can instantlytranslocate the images from thegrave-looking 19th-century editionsto the psychedelic pop art period.Well, the ones other than “TheScream,” anyway.

ORE THANINSPIRATION?Like theircounterparts in everybranch of art, it is quite common tosee musicians inspiring each other. When it comes totheir music, thisbecomes even moreapparent. Thisweek I am going tolist some of those“inspirations” thatI've encountered.I’ve used quotationmarks for the sakeof being politicallycorrect, since in thelist below you’re likely to findsomething more than inspiration. SoI’ll let you decide whether it'sinspiration or something else. I’veorganized the list in the followingmanner: the first band/song is the oneinspired by the latter. Metallica/Enter Sandman –Excel/Tapping Into the EmotionalVoid

[email protected] Özgün (PHYS/PhD)

Excel was one of the inventors ofthe “crossover” genre, together withD.R.I, Suicidal Tendencies, NuclearAssault and S.O.D. The song “EnterSandman,” which is the opener forMetallica's 1991 album “Metallica”(aka Black), has a strange similarity toExcel's “Tapping Into the EmotionalVoid” from their '89 album “TheJoke's on You.” I was really shockedwhen I first noticed how much alikethese two songs sound.Deep Purple/Child in Time – It's aBeautiful Day/Bombay CallingThis one was a really bigdisappointment for me. I used to havea special liking for Deep Purple, butafter noticing this“inspiration”(unfortunately there arealso others), I lost all myrespect for them. It's aBeautiful Day is anAmericanpsychedelic/folk-rockband, and I can say theyare very underrated. Intheir self-titled debutalbum released in 1969, they have thisgreat instrumental song, “BombayCalling.” It seems to have been quiteliked by Deep Purple keyboardist JohnLord, so that in the latter band’sfamous 1970 album “Deep Purple InRock” one of their most famousworks, “Child in Time,” appears. Deli Gömleği/İçtenlik Öldü –Fang/Money Will Roll Right InDeli Gömleği is a Turkish

alternative rock/grunge band. To behonest, I don't really know many songsby this band, but “İçtenlik Öldü”somehow reminded me of Californiahardcore punk band Fang's “MoneyWill Roll Right In.” Actually I firstheard a cover of this song byMudhoney & Kurt Cobain and thenlistened to the original one. But I canassure you that the song by DeliGömleği is not a cover, and sadly youcan even find the feedback in the introof the song.Teoman/Kardelen – UriahHeep/Lady in BlackWell, this one is again from aTurkish musician. He was “inspired”by the British progressive rock bandUriah Heep’s widely known song,“Lady in Black.” There’s not much tosay about it -- just listen to the songs, and you decide. The Offspring/Why Don't You Geta Job – The Beatles/Ob-La-Di Ob-La-DaThe Offspring is a band that I reallylike (especially their first threerecords), but I have to be unbiased. The song “Why Don't You Get a Job”from their album “Americana” (withwhich they have, regrettably, started tobecome an MTV band) definitelyreminds me of “Ob-La-Di Ob-La-Da” by the Beatles. To be fair, mostbands have really gotten inspirationfrom them, but yes, there is a “thinline” regarding this inspirationbusiness.Led Zeppelin/Stairway to Heaven

– Spirit/TaurusThe last example is a very famousone, coming from the legendary LedZeppelin. It’s again sad to have toaccept this, but the intro part of thegroundbreaking song “Stairway toHeaven” from their fourth album“Led Zeppelin IV,” released in 1971,has something in parallel withpsychedelic/progressive rock bandSpirit's instrumental song “Taurus”from their self-titled debut in 1968. Bonus: Ayna/Aşık Oldum Anne –In Flames/Cloud Connected As a bonus, we have a special guest. This one is not a musical inspiration;it’s in visual form. Turkish band Aynashot a music video for their song “AşıkOldum Anne,” which seems to havebeen strongly inspired by the video ofIn Flames's “Cloud Connected.”Unfortunately, the former videodoesn’t even display the use ofadequate technology and seems tohave been shot very sloppily comparedto the perfect stop-motion scenes thatcan be seen in the “CloudConnected” video. I am almost surethat this “inspiration” is not theband's fault but their producer's. This list is open-ended, but I wantto stop here because I guess I'vealready demonstrated what I wanted topoint out. Of course musicians andbands have always inspired and willcontinue to inspire other musiciansand bands, but one should evaluatethe thickness (or the “thinness”) ofthe line. See you next time.
