Mac Computers and Viruses• Macs are far less susceptible to viruses• Norton Antivirus for Mac is available from NUIT at

http://www.it.northwestern.edu/software/sav/mac/• Run LiveUpdate for Norton often; switching from “On-campus” to “Off-

campus” is not necessary• Viruses are often embedded in MS Office documents, in programs

called “Macros”-- Office will display a warning if it encounters suspicious macros; if it does, do not run these macros

• Spyware is rarely found on Macs• Internet pop-up ads can be blocked by turning on Pop-Up Blocking in

Safari or Firefox• Internet ad banners can be blocked in Firefox by installing Ad-Block Plus

Tips for Keeping Your Computer Running Smoothly

Windows PCs• Occasionally run Disk

Defragmenter to keep your hard drive working fast

• Occasionally run ScanDisk to check for disk errors

• Uninstall programs you don’t use

• Back-up all your personal data (email, documents, pictures, music, movies), then wipe your machine and reinstall software from your System Restore disc
