Mining Old Mine DumpsOld hard rock mining sitescan be found throughoutthe USA, especially in thewestern states. Many stillcontain ample amounts ofgold— not necessarily themines themselves, but themine DUMPS. Mine dumpsare the areas outside ofshafts, portals, and otherhard rock mine workingswhere waste rock wasdumped. The reason you’dwant to prospect here iskind of like that old saying“one man’s trash isanother man’s treasure.”Some mines, especiallythose in very remote areas,sent only their verypremium ore to mills forprocessing. It would havebeen too costly to transport“so-so” material to a milllocated far away. That meant even decent grade ore went to the dump piles. Atsmaller mines where ore was hand-sorted before going to the mill, the finesfrom the mucking process could be considered waste. Also, the sorting mighthave been done underground where the lighting was poor. At many smaller-scale mines there were no ore bins, so various grades of ore was piled up inhopes that shipping costs would go down or the price of gold increase enoughto make transportation of lower grade ore worth the expense. If neither came topass, the intermediate-grade ore simple sat there— and is still sitting therewaiting for you to sample it and perhaps find some nice specimens. What Happens toGold DuringEarthquakes?Q: Can gold be pushed tothe surface or overburdenpushed off of bedrock whenan earthquake occurs? A: Earthquakes slide rocksupwards or sideways (orboth) on the different sidesof a fault, but they really donot push overburden offbedrock. Gold deposits areoften related to faults, butonly older ones, not thoserelated to modern dayearthquakes. Gold bearingfaults are very old andnormally don’t havemovement along themanymore. Hard rock golddeposits are formed deep inthe earth and a combinationof fault movement anderosion eventually bringsthem up to the surface— butthat takes a long time.Because of that, there isreally not any goodcorrelation between
