Mine dumps are the areas outside of shafts, portals, and other hard rock mine workings where waste rock was dumped. The reason you’d want to prospect here is kind of like that old saying “one man’s trash is another man’s treasure.” Some mines, especially those in very remote areas, sent only their very premium ore to mills for processing. It would have been too costly to transport “so-so” material to a mill located far away. That meant even decent grade ore went to the dump piles. At smaller mines where ore was hand-sorted before going to the mill, the fines from the mucking process could be considered waste. Also, the sorting might have been done underground where the lighting was poor. At many smaller- scale mines there were no ore bins, so various grades of ore was piled up in hopes that shipping costs would go down or the price of gold increase enough to make transportation of lower grade ore worth the expense. If neither came to pass, the intermediate-grade ore simple sat there— and is still sitting there waiting for you to sample it and perhaps find some nice specimens. Q: Can gold be pushed to the surface or overburden pushed off of bedrock when an earthquake occurs? A: Earthquakes slide rocks upwards or sideways (or both) on the different sides of a fault, but they really do not push overburden off bedrock. Gold deposits are often related to faults, but only older ones, not those related to modern day earthquakes. Gold bearing faults are very old and normally don’t have movement along them anymore. Hard rock gold deposits are formed deep in the earth and a combination of fault movement and erosion eventually brings them up to the surface— but that takes a long time. History Nugget: Park City, UtahPark City, Utah is a goodexample of a boom and bustmining town that's boomingagain—revitalized in grandstyle as a year-roundmountain resort andinternational touristdestination. More than 145years ago, however, folksflocked here seeking silver. The first mining claim wasfiled in December 1868, and

for over a century, the abundant veins found in the Wasatch Mountainssurrounding the small town produced about $400 million in silver. When themining industry slowed down in the 1920s and 30s, Park City's winter sportsramped up. Good money continues to be made today— with snow and tourism.Silver mining, though, is the town’s legacy, and still very much honored aroundtown. The best place to learn about the mines, men, machinery, workingconditions, town history, and prominent citizens of the day, is at the Park CityMuseum in the heart of Old Town.
