The Gothic quarter of Pals was one of the first in the region to be
restored, and has won a number of awards and nominations:
1949 Pals was declared BCIN (Cultural Asset of National Importance)
1973 National Arts Award
1980 National Arts and Tourism Award
1986 Medal of Honour for Tourism awarded by the Regional
Government of Catalonia, the Generalitat.
In the late 1940s, the gothic quarter was in very poor condition and
had practically been abandoned. The inhabitants had moved across
town to the district of Samària and it's historical and heritage value
was ignored until on his own initiative Dr. Pi i Figueras, with Mr. Pere
Servià i Cantó, the Mayor of the time, requested and received a
number of grants from the provincial authorities in Girona in 1948
to start the restoration of the medieval buildings, which took 30
years to complete. This group of buildings has now become one of
the best preserved attractions in the region.

CULTURAL MUSEUM “CA LA PRUNA”A fortified house dating from the 15th-16th century. It was restored and currently functions as a cultural centre. It contains: a collection of agricultural tools, a room for temporary painting or sculpture exhibitions and the belongings of the town's first pharmacist Mr. Desideri Ferrer, donated by his grandson, Mr. Mataró
MAIN SQUARE AND TOWN GATEThis is the Gothic arch which was the entrance to the walled town, which may have formed part of a hall or covered square similar to the one at Ullastret, and the present-day Town Hall.
MEDIEVAL TOMBS (The tombs of Carrer Major)Anthropomorphic graves have been found cut into the solid rock. They can be seen at Ca la Pruna, carrer Major and at Torre de les Hores. They date from the Visigothic period (5th to 8th century).

X-XI), absis i nau d'estil gòtic (s. xv), portalada frontal barroca (s. XVIII), el campanar i el terrabastall (s. XVIII).
TORRE DE LES HORES (Homage Tower)A magnificent circular Romanesque tower from the 11th-12th century built on a rock outcrop. It is 15 metres high. It is known as “Torre de les Hores” because a Gothic belltower was added to it after the castle was demolished in the 15th century. It was the main tower of the Castle of Pals, and is its oldest and best-conserved part.
THE CASTLEDating from the 9th century, it fell into ruin at the end of the 15th century after several armed conflicts. In 1478, king Joan II granted permission to the Councillor to make use of the stones of the castle to build, repair and cover the church. Only the “Homage Tower” of the castle was left, with two bridges with segmented arches that linked different parts of the fortress and the foundations on which the chapel of the house was raised. Today, it is the private home of the Pi i Figueras family. Dr. Pi i Figueras was a doctor born in Pals who worked in Barcelona and who bought the land where the castle of Pals once stood. Despite being a modern building, it has the same characteristics as the other Gothic buildings in the quarter.
CHURCH OF SANT PERE (SAINT PETER)The church of Sant Pere de Pals already existed in 994. Part of the stonework it is made of was taken from the old castle of Pals. There are a number of architectural styles in the building: a Romanesque base (10-11th century), a Gothic nave and apse (15th century) and a Baroque front porch (18th Century). The most notable parts are the 15th century apse and nave and the 18th century doorway, belltower and upper storey.

THE WALLThis dates from the 12th to the 14th century. Only 5 towers of the same type remain (Ramonet, Rom, Xinello, l'Hospital and a fifth without an official name). They have a rectangular base and are open on the side facing the interior, with barrel vaulted ceilings or slightly pointed roofs. The town gradually expanded to the east, west and south. This is why the northern 'tramuntana' area is so well preserved.
THE JOSEP PLA POINTThis viewing point is named after Josep Pla, the well-known writer from Palafrugell who vividly evoked the magic of this place from where you can see one of the best views of the coastal plain, dominated by the Mountain of Montgrí and with the Medes Islands in the distance.
HOSPITALThe building known as “l'Hospital” is a farmhouse dating from the 18th century, although the earliest documented reference is from 1352. It is located outside the town walls to attend pilgrims and the sick people.

CHURCH OF SANT FRUCTUÓS (Masos de Pals)The image of Sant Fructuós on the façade was once blown off by the force of the Tramuntana wind in a storm. A small chapel consecrated to Sant Fructuós, Sant Sebastià and Sant Roc was built at the start of the 16th century. A number of houses (masos) sprang up around it and eventually became the centre of Masos de Pals. Rapid growth in the 18th century inspired the construction of a new church close to the chapel. Work began in the middle of the 19th century but was not completed until the 20th.
TORRE MORA (Pals Beach)When danger threatened from the sea, the Torre Mora would send out smoke signals to warn the castle of Pals and other towers in the area. Attacks by Turkish and Bereber Pirates in the 16th century caused widespread damage to the towns of the Costa Brava. Recent excavations have unearthed what might have been the port tavern, with ceramics and an oven.
