    Now that

    You

    are Saved

    What do I do noW?

Now that you have received Jesus Christ as your Savior, this booklet has been written or you. It aims to do twothings: to introduce you to the idea o going to church, and to show how you can be completely certain that Godhas accepted you.

Probably the best step you can take now that you havebecome a Christian is to nd a church where you can eelat home. But why go to church?

Tink o it like this. Candles stand in candlesticks,

light bulbs go into light sockets, and trees grow in soil.Without candlesticks, candles would all over. Withoutbeing plugged in, light bulbs would never shine. And

without soil, trees would simply die.

For Christians, the church is a candlestick, a power

source, and somewhere to put down roots so that youcan stand, shine, and grow. Alongside the Bible andprayer, the church is one o the rich resources which Godhas given us in our lives as Christians.

    a together faIth

Being a Christian means to ollow Jesus. We walkin His ootsteps. So what did Jesus do did He goto church?

Tere were no churches in Jesus time, but He did goregularly to a place o worship. And so did the rst

ollowers o Jesus. Worshipping God together with otherbelievers is an essential part o being a Christian.Te Bible says nothing about solo believers.

o say: I want to be a Christian, but I dont want to belong to a

church would be like saying:I want to be married and staysingle! You simply cannotbecome a Christian on yourown. By new birth you haveentered the amily o God

and belong to the householdo aith (Galatians 6:10). Tis is good news, because itmeans belonging to a group o people, rather than to aninstitution.

Just as Jesus surrounded Himsel with the twelve

disciples, we need to be with other ollowers o Jesus.

Te church shows us that the Christian aith is atogether aith. When you became a Christian, you

were not only brought into a relationship with God; youwere brought into a relationship with other people, too.

You became a part o Gods people, the church, livingon earth.

    the church and you

Because the church is Gods people, it is here that youcan encounter God together with others. One Christian

leader put it simply: A church is where the Holy Spiritis. When we are with Gods people, we can be broughtace to ace with the love, power, and majesty o God.

By being a part o the church you can

Get to know other Christians and make newriends who will be able to encourage you in yournewound aith.

Hear teaching from the Bible, which will helpyou to understand your aith better, and enable

    you to grow.

Meet with Jesus in the company of others asJesus Himsel said: Where two or three are gatheredtogether in My name, am there in the midst o them(Matthew18:20).

A church is a place where you can eel at home and whereyou can put your roots down, like a tree planted by therivers o water(Psalm 1:3).

    fIndIng a church

Start looking or a church by going to one o their services(the times o services are usually listed on a notice boardoutside churches), or you can contact the minister orpastor and arrange to have a talk about your new aith.

Dont be araid to tell the minister or pastor that you have

recently received Jesus Christ as your Savior he or she willbe delighted to hear about it!

ry to nd a church where you can really belong. Tereare many dierent types o churches. In your area you

will probably nd a wide variety: churches which are

traditional or modern, quiet or noisy, small or large.Dont be araid to take time looking or a church which

Te most important points to watch or in the churchyou choose are that there should be

    Goodbiblicalteaching.

    WorshipthatenablesyoutoencounterGod.

People who are friendly and encourage you togrow as a Christian.

    the church Is for others

You need others. Others need you. Te church is therenot just or the people inside it, but also to serve the

    world around it.

What you have ound, othersalso need to have. Churchesall around the world work tobring the good news o Jesusto people in need and every

willing worker is welcome.Your church will help you to

    Whats haPPened

to Me?elevision news reports sometimes show the actualmoment when someone is told that they have won a largecash prize in a competition.

At rst they reuse to believe it. Tey think it must be amistake or some kind o hoax. But ater a ew seconds, there comes a moment when they nally accept the news.

Yet even as they leap up and down with excitement, theycannot take in what it all means or them. Tey still do

not ully understand what has happened.

Te same is oten true or someone who has turnedto God or the rst time and started to ollow Jesus.

You know that you have taken an important step, but you still have many questions to ask. What does

it all mean? What has happened to me? How will itchange my lie?

Te Bible uses a rich variety o ways to describe whathappens to us when we turn our lives over to God.Here are just a ew o them.

    You have

Been declared not guilty by God on the cross,Jesus paid the penalty or all the things thatwe do wrong in our lives, setting us ree to becompletely orgiven by God. ere is thereore nowno condemnation to those who are in Christ esus(Romans8:1).

Been saved from darkness whatever kind odarkness you have been in ear, despair, guilt,

addiction, grie, or bitterness Jesus has saved yourom it and is already bringing you into the light.God has called you out o darkness into is marvelouslight(1Peter2:9).

Been born again what has happened to you

is so important that the Bible describes it asbeing born again (John 3:3). Your lie has beenchanged orever because God now lives in you byHis Holy Spirit. anyone is in Christ, he is a newcreation; old things have passed away; behold, allthings have become new(2Corinthians5:17).

Become a child of God as a son or daughter oGod, you can begin to talk to Him personally, asyour Father. ut as many as received im, to theme gave the right to become children o od, to thosewho believe in is name(John1:12).

Come home to God like the prodigal son inJesus parable, you have returned home aterbeing ar rom God, and He has welcomed you

with open arms. or this my son was dead and isalive again; he was lost and is ound(Luke15:24).

Found peace with God becoming a Christianmarks the beginning o a new relationship withGod. You have been reconciled to God, and you

will ind a new quality o living at peacewith Him. Jesus said, I have come that theymay have lie, and that they may have it moreabundantly (John 10:10).

Joined the people of God as well as a newrelationship with God, you have also become part

o the people o God. You need other Christians and they need you. nce[you] were not a peoplebut are now the people o od(1Peter2:10).

As we will see later, the Bible is a major resource orevery Christian to use in their relationship with God. I

you have a Bible, take a ew minutes now to read JesusstoryoftheprodigalsoninLuke15:11-32.Jesustoldthis story to paint a vivid picture o how God welcomesthose who turn to Him.

    Beginning to discover what

has happened to you is animportant rst step to take as aChristian. O course, it is only abeginning. God is so great andinexhaustible that well still bediscovering new things about

is the accuser, Satan, who demands a verdict o guilty.Acting or them is their advocate, Jesus. As John wrote,

i anyone sins, we have an Advocate with the ather, esusChrist the righteous(1John2:1).

    the MIssIng evIdence

Te problem is that the deendants know they are guilty. And the Judge o all the earth must act justly. Tereseems to be nothing let to do but to pass sentence. Butthen Jesus steps orward and challenges the accuser:Where is your evidence?

Tat causes quite a stir! Te accuser is embarrassed. Ashe goes through his case papers, he cannot produce anyevidence: no exhibits, no statements by witnesses, norecords o any description. Not a single scrap o proo.No sign o this man and womans wrongdoing can bediscovered in the entire universe. What has happened to it?

Tis is what has happened. Te evidence o our sin has beendestroyed! Jesus Christ gathered it all up and carried it intothe res o Gods judgment, which swept across the place

where He was crucied. During the terrible hours o Jesusdeath, the record was consumed, leaving no trace.

Paul describes it in this way:

And you, being dead in your trespasses and theuncircumcision o your fesh, e has made alivetogether with im, having orgiven you all trespasses, having wiped out the handwriting o requirementsthat was against us, which was contrary to us. And

e has taken it out o the way, having nailed it to thecross. (Colossians2:13-14)

Jesus the advocate now makes His sensational claim tothe whole court: Tere is no evidence against this manand woman. Te accuser withdraws in rage, and the

Judge pronounces the deendants not guilty. Tey areset ree, justied by Gods grace.

Tis is a simple, graphic way obeginning to understand whatJesus has done or us. He putsus right with God. He declaresthat we are not guilty. As Paulsays, ere is thereore now no

condemnation to those who arein Christ esus (Romans 8:1).Our sins have been orgiven

and orgotten by God because o what Jesus achieved onthe cross.

Because o this, Christians never need to ear the naljudgment o God. Jesus promised this: od did not sendis on into the world to condemn the world, but that theworld through im might be saved. e who believes inim is not condemned(John3:17-18).Jesuscametosetus ree rom ear the ear o judgment, sin, and death.

Te New estament word or judgment is the Greekword krisis rom which the word crisis is derived. Sowe can say that anyone who has been born again willnever know a crisis hour, standing in the judgment,

waiting to nd out whether he or she is saved or lost.Te matter is already settled.

I you have just read throughthe last two sections o thisbooklet, you might now bethinking: how do I know thatall this is true? How can I besure that this has actuallyhappened to me? It all seemstoo good to be true!

I you are eeling like this, then you are not alone. Some othe biggest questions people have when they rst becomeChristians are questions such as: how can I know thatGod loves me? How can I be certain that I am orgiven? How can I know that I have eternal lie?

Te good news is that God wants you to be certain o

your new aith. You dont have to wonder whether Godreally does love you or not you can know it or yoursel.

In one o the Bibles great stories, Paul brings the goodnews o Jesus to the town o Philippi in Greece. He andhis riends are beaten and thrown into prison or the

Te rst Christians were sure about their aith. Here are just three examples about what God has done

    or us

John,oneofJesus12disciples, put this inoneofhis letters: Tese things I have written to you whobelieve in the name o the Son o God, that youmayknowthatyouhaveeternallife(1John5:13).

Paulwrote tosomeoftherstChristians:Nowwe have received, not the spirit o the world, butthe Spirit who is rom God, that we might knowthe things that have been reely given to us byGod(1Corinthians2:12).

Paulprayedthisgreatprayer:Ipraythattheeyeso your understanding being enlightened; that youmay know what is the hope o His calling, whatare the riches o the glory o His inheritance in thesaints, and what is the exceeding greatness o His

    powertowarduswhobelieve(Ephesians1:18-19).

How can we have this condence in God or ourselves? How can we have the ull wealth o assurance, asPaul puts it?

God has given us two witnesses to reassure us o Hislove and acceptance. Tese witnesses are the Word oGod (the Bible) and the Spirit o God.

Te second way you can be certain about what God hasdone or you is through the work o the Holy Spirit in yourlie. When someone becomes a Christian, God becomespresent in his or her lie, through His Holy Spirit.

But who is this Holy Spirit? Christians believe that Godis so much greater than us that He is on a dierent levelo being. Tis is why Christians talk about there beingthree persons within the one God the Father, the Son,and the Holy Spirit.

Tis belie in God as a rinity is much more than just adusty old theory. It tells us that the God o the Bible ismuch greater and more glorious than we can ever thinkor imagine: Now to the King eternal, immortal, invisible,to od who alone is wise, be honor and glory orever and

Te Holy Spirit is the person who puts us in touch withGod. He brings Gods presence, Gods love, and Godspower into our lives. He gives us the strength to live asChrist lived, and He gives us the inner certainty we needabout our aith.

Te Bible tells us: e pirit imsel bears witness with ourspirit that we are children o od(Romans8:16).Noticethat the Bible uses the word spirit twice once with acapital letter or Gods Spirit, and then with a small letteror our human spirit. Gods Spirit assures us, deep insideour hearts, that we truly are the children o God.

    Whats the dIfference?

Becoming a Christian isthe work o a moment. It happened when you gaveyour lie to God and Herescued you rom sin anddeath. But being a Christianis the work o a lietime. It takes time or God totransorm us into thepeople He wants us to be!

You are at the beginning o anincredible journey o ollowing

Jesus. We have already seenhow you can be sure o your

So what dierence does it make to us to live as a Christian?

    under neW ManageMent

When you become a Christian, the ownership o yourlie changes hands. In the past, you were the boss, doing

things in the way you saw best. For many people, thismeant looking ater themselves above everything else.

But now you have a new boss. You have given your lieto Jesus Christ. Tis is what it means to be a Christian Jesus is now in charge, as the Lord o your lie. Te

Apostle Paul said: i you coness with your mouth the ordesus and believe in your heart that od has raised imrom the dead, you will be saved(Romans10:9).

What does this mean inpractice? It means a new way o

lie. As we submit our lives toGod and become His servants,

we nd an amazing newreedom. We are no longer theslaves o sin instead, we areree to do good. As Jesus said,

have come that they may havelie, and that they may have itmore abundantly(John 10:10).

We start to live out the lie owhat Jesus called the kingdom

o God. In simple terms, thismeans accepting that God rules us as our King. Jesusspoke about this way o lie in His amous Sermon on theMount,whichyoucanndinMatthewchapters5to7.

It also means keeping the en Commandments in

Exodus 20:1-17.e TenCommandments arent verypopular today our society has turned them into theTenSuggestions!ButtheseGod-givenruleswereneverintended to restrict or spoil our lives, as many peopletoday think. Instead, they act like a government health

warning on a pack o cigarettes: doing these things can

    damage your lie.

    PLuggIng Into gods PoWer

You might nd the thought o living your lie underGods rule rather daunting. Te Bible is realistic aboutthis. It knows how easily we can be tempted to all into

sin. It also tells us that the world is a hostile place orChristians, and that we have an enemy: e sober, be

vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about likea roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour(1Peter5:8).

However, we do not struggle against sin on our own. TeHoly Spirit lives within us, giving us the power to resistthe devil and to overcome evil. We only have to ask Himto help us.

Tink o it like this. You have electricity in your home.Te house is wired and connected to the power station. Iyou arrive home on a dark night, there may be no light orheat in your house, but you know what to do: you pressthe switch, and power comes through. You have lightand warmth.

Living in the power o the Spirit is like turning theswitch on. Everything else is ready. Te Gospel message islike the wires and cables that are connected to the powerstation, the cross o Christ. Lines o truth have alreadybeen laid. Te power is there waiting. When you trust

your lie to Jesus and ask or Gods strength, His savingpower fows to you, giving you light.

Te vital thing is to ask. Knowing all about a powerstation can still leave you in the cold and dark. You cantouch the very walls o a nuclear power plant but still be

reezing. When we ask God or His help to overcometemptation and to live our lives, then we are tapping intothe resources o God, which are inexhaustible.
