Catherine King was born in Falkirk and now lives in Fife, close to the picturesque Royal Burgh of Culross on the northern shore of the Forth, which

is a complete community, preserved as it was in the 16th and 17th centuries. The artist has always loved the roofs and stepped gables of the town,

which contrast beautifully with the garden planting and the river beyond. She chose to work in pen and wash for this painting as they force

spontaneous decisions about composition and colour.

Kirsty Macfarlane is an artist and illustrator currently living and working in Dundee. One of her many inspirations is the wild and rugged Scottish

landscape, particularly in the Highlands and Western Isles. She was inspired to create drawings of the last remaining cottages on Hirta, St Kilda,

after visiting the remote archipelago in the final year of her degree. Kirsty has also worked in Toronto and Berlin and continues to take

commissions and work freelance.

In 2010 the National Trust for Scotland invited entries to an art competition which would showcase the Trust through works of art. each painting in this calendar is accompanied by a short narrative about the artist and the inspiration behind their picture. We chose the front cover because Peter Mylles’ painting manages to capture the haunting emotions evoked by Culloden Battlefield in a very different way from photography. The lonely leanach cottage has remained standing since the battle of 1746 when over one thousand soldiers died all around it. The 12 images within this calendar highlight the variety of properties, gardens and countryside within our care, with each artist depicting a moment in time.
