Welcome to the inaugural issue of NTIP News! The first year in the life of a teacher is both an exciting and challenging time. JELO Days

P a g e 3 V o l u m e 1 , I s s u e 1

Job Embedded Professional Learning (JELO) days can be used for a variety of self-directed learning, including visiting a classroom, job-shadowing, attending an inservice, or investigating OTEP.

1. Access the JELO form through the Teacher Performance Appraisal (TPA) site on the intranet.

2. Find the JELO tab on the left hand side of the screen.

3. Fill out the JELO form.

4. An email is automatically sent to your principal.

PRESCRIBED PROGRAM:

2010-2011: 1 JELO days

2011-2012: 2 JELO days

SPECIAL PROGRAM:

2010-2011: 2 JELO days

Coverage: CODE 98

Points to Remember:

Discuss your plans with your principal prior to taking JELO days.

All JELO days must be used by May 31, 2011. They cannot be transferred to the next school year.

You may choose to share your JELO days with your mentor.

Teacher identify GOALS and STRATEGIES in the following three areas: Orientation, Professional Learning, and Mentoring. Strategies should be as specific as possible (dates of inservices, meetings). Treat the Strategy Form as a living document, adding current and relevant professional learning and deleting older learning.

NTIP teachers do not complete an Annual Learning Plans (ALP).

Teachers participating in NTIP record their professional learning through Strategy Forms. The form is called an “Individual Strategy Form” for first-time LTO 97+s and an “NTIP Strategy Form” for new permanent hires.

The forms are accessed through the TPA site on the intranet.

First-time LTO 97+s continue to add to Strategy Forms, but do not have the principal sign off on the form.

For new permanent hires, successful completion of NTIP includes having your principal sign off the NTIP Strategy Form after the NTIP teacher has 2 successful appraisals.

The appraisal looks at 8 competencies in 3 domains (Commitment to Pupils and Pupil Learning, Professional Knowledge, and Professional Practice). Both the principal and teacher sign off the appraisal and can add comments.

First-time LTO 97+s

First-time LTO 97+s are evaluated using one-page form. Two appraisals are completed if the assignment is longer than five months.

Points to Remember:

It is recommended that appraisals are completed in December and January.

If you haven’t been appraised yet, talk to your principal soon.

Ask your principal to print a copy of your appraisal for you.

New Permanent Hires

New permanent hires require TWO successful appraisals as part of the completion of NTIP. The appraisal process involves three components:

1. PRE-OBSERVATION meeting

2. CLASSROOM OBSERVATION

3. POST-OBSERVATION meeting

A word of gratitude… to our NTIP Mentors.

In the Fall of 2010, NTIP Mentors participated in Mentor Training: A Case for Mentorship throughout the Board. Mentors were invited to consider their role within a Biblical model of “two by two” Mentorship. At each session NTIP Mentors participated in activities which assisted them in clarifying the role of mentor and in supporting the NTIP Teacher during the NTIP year. Through role playing, discussion and a collaborative Board game, Mentors further solidified their essential partnership in the New Teacher Induction Program.

We want to thank the mentors for ongoing support of their mentees.

Please forward a copy of this newsletter to your mentor.

FOCUS ON FAITH: Word, Worship and Witness We hope you have noticed posters around your school with the words WORD, WORSHIP and WITNESS on them. They are part of the TCDSB’s three year Pastoral Plan.

A theology of Church today must include the three essential aspects of the first faith communities after the resurrection of Jesus:

A Ministry of Word A Ministry of Worship A Ministry of Witness

As “Ecclesia,” Catholic Educators are called to be faithful to these ministries in their ongoing adult faith formation and in their teaching. The Mission and Vision of the TCDSB calls each of us to the same fidelity of ministry through word, worship, and witness. The Catholic School shares the same values of Jesus, the same vision for community, the same rootedness in the Biblical tradition. Therefore, any effort to nurture the faith Community within the Catholic School must also be faithful to the celebration of Word, Worship and Witness.

Last year, in Year One of the TCDSB’s Pastoral Plan Ministry of the Word, we were invited to consider creative and intentional ways for Sacred Scripture, the Word of God, to have a place of prominence in the faith life of the school community.

The focus of this year in Year Two is on Ministry of Worship. This provides an opportunity to highlight the liturgical life of the local school community. The liturgical seasons of the Church are emphasized and celebrated.

Next year, our Pastoral Plan will focus on Ministry of Witness. This will encourage the school community to examine and bear witness to the Social Justice Teachings of the Catholic Church through outreach initiatives.

In further support to bringing this to life, visit the Nurturing Our Catholic Community’s page on the Board’s website, contact your Elementary Religion Resource Teacher or your Secondary School Chaplain.
